What Has Happened to all the Strong Women On Tv?

Maybe because im a man i dont really care too much about this subject. But surely equality would be the point where we dont even care if the hero would be male or female, it wouldnt be a big deal.

But if you want an answer to why their are less women than men in these types of roles ...its 'cause men are stronger. 😛

Men are stronger?! I highly doubt that! Have a baby and then we'll see who's the bigger wuss! LOL
Interesting article. I especially like the part about BSG...although that's over now aswel 🙁
I think it is just that's not what the youth of today is into anymore.
Now, if you watch Buffy you're a geek, whereas back when it was on TV it was cool. I think it's just really not cool to like things with elements of sci-fi or fantasy anymore.

I don't know...I've always been a geek!

Yay, 100 post!!! w00t

"What Has Happened to all the Strong Women On Tv?"
They are still there!

That link was a yawn fest of a guys needing to write something and choosing a subject he manipulated to make seem like an issue.

There are MANY strong female role models on TV, even in the shows he dismisses with the characters 'little more than clothes-horses'.

They cleared the neighborhood to make room for all the desperate housewives...

Sex is much more interesting this century, women power? Ppp-shaw!

Awwww, what's wrong with the gals on Wisteria Lane??
I see what they mean. Although there are still strong female role models on TV, besides the ones mentioned in the article, they aren't really the figureheads of the shows; compared to Alias, Buffy and the like.

Spuffyy - I LOLed at the Desperate Housewives comment!

What happened to all the strong women on tv? They're probably off nagging someone.
Well, there are still some shows that feature strong female characters. I don't agree that the women on "Desperate Housewives" are not strong women... They definitely have some strong personalities on that show, that's for damn sure. If don't believe me, check out Lynette Scavo or Bree Hodge. Hell, even Gabrielle Solis can be a force to be reckoned with when she wants to be! And Edie Britt redifined sexy in women over 25.
"Heroes" has some awesome female characters for girls to look to as well. 🙂 A few other shows I can think of are "Lost", "Grey's Anatomy" (Christina and Bailey, anyone?)... So there are still some shows with a glimmer of hope for those of us who prefer shows with more intelligent writing than fluff.

I loved this part of the article and thought it was so true:
Fast forward a few years and the small screen has become a cathedral to credit cards, shopping and the type of emotional vacuousness that makes Paris Hilton look like Germaine Greer. TV's teen queens now worship at the altar of capitalism with shows in the mould of Gossip Girl and 90210 portraying their female characters as little more than expensive clothes horses.

While those types of shows are great for a little mindless fun, there's a reason why shows like that don't go on forever: it gets tired really quick. I was a huge fan of the original "90210", but I had to admit that in the later seasons I was getting bored.

HisMrs agrees: Men are stronger?! I highly doubt that! Have a baby and then we'll see who's the bigger wuss! LOL

Haha. Well to take this thread in a completely different (imo more interesting) direction... There is evidence that women in general have a higher pain threshold, but i remember reading a fairly balanced article on the fact that its only around a 60/40 average of women having higher pain thresholds than men, many in fact, are less! I once had had an open dislocation and fractured talus of my ankle and hardly felt a thing, even the paramedics were surprised...whereas every girl ive been on a climbing trip with has complained about some ache or sprain from falling. There isnt much reason for women to have a higher pain threshold, we evolve to accept pain as a species, we don't evolve as a sex within a species.

Anyway, men are stronger, due to testosterone... So seeing men in heroic roles is hardly surprising since most 'heroic' actions require strength. Of course there are the 'emotional' heroes, the care-worker perhaps...but that hardly makes for good action TV.

Well, I definitely cannot take pain on a normal day (I pass out just at the sight of blood!), but when I was giving birth, I was a total champ. :) I think it's all about the hormone balance...

Well, if it's all about the character's physical strength, why isn't every leading man in an action show huge and muscular? I mean, Jack Bauer is easily the most famous action hero on TV right now and possibly of all time, but he's not exactly the biggest, toughest-looking guy in the world. The same goes for movies...take, for example, James Bond, who is usually played by a pretty skinny guy (Craig is probably the biggest guy to play him to date, and even he isn't exactly Arnold Schwarzenegger), but still manages to be an iconic action hero. And let's not forget Batman, who doesn't have any powers, but still manages to be one of the most famous and beloved superheroes of all time.

Point is, a compelling action hero isn't made by his or her physical strength...he/she is made by his/her charisma, cleverness, intelligence, and resourcefulness, qualities that anyone can have regardless of gender and physical capability.

Now, as for the topic at hand, I don't completely agree. I mean, sure, a lot of shows are lacking strong female characters, but the same can be said for male characters. Clearly, the problem at hand isn't the lack of strong role models, it's the lack of good writing. And frankly, there's not much we can do about that because most good writing doesn't appeal to the masses, who happen to be incredibly stupid and need things dumbed down as much as possible.

Maybe you misinterpret my wording of 'strength' as bulkiness.. which of course im not refering to. I am referring to the fact that in swimming, running, boxing, fighting, jumping, etc ...ohh and climbing, women are inferior.

Intriguing examples you use considering how regularly Bauer has to use his strength to fight for his life. And Batman who is rediculously strong, he has no superhuman powers just a devotion to training so that he can be as strong as he can be.

Im sorry to be the one to break it to you but, men, on average, are stronger.

Im not saying women CAN'T be heroes, im saying that its hardly surprising having men in a role as heroes considering they are more suited to the task. I get that theres this femenist movement and PC bullshit where noone can be better than anyone else, but men should sometimes be allowed to be men.

You mention charisma, cleverness, intelligence, and resourcefulness. All are qualities equal to us all. Physical ability is not. ie. An unfair advantage on the male heroic front.

My point...
I look forward not to the day where women are equal in their 'heroic' role, but where the man can be masculine without numpty feminists asking where the female role model is.

Oh dear! This post is flawed in so many ways, but time is short and I will respond later. Maybe.

So what? My point still stands. Someone built like Jason Statham should be better at swimming, running, boxing, fighting, jumping, and climbing than someone built like Keanu Reeves, but they still both manage to portray iconic action heroes.

Intriguing examples you use considering how regularly Bauer has to use his strength to fight for his life. And Batman who is rediculously strong, he has no superhuman powers just a devotion to training so that he can be as strong as he can be.

I suppose I can see your point, but still, Jack Bauer only wins every fight because he's written that way. In the real world, he would be killed easily by some of the guys he's pitted against, but we're willing to suspend our belief so that we think Jack could win.

The same goes for Batman. "Rediculously" strong as he may be, most people put him at the same rank as Superman, who can throw trucks without breaking a sweat. Why? Because Batman is an interesting character, in spite of the physical disadvantage he has when compared to most other superheroes.

For the record, I know that almost all men are stronger than most women. I'm not stupid. But still, if a compelling female action hero is written, why can't we suspend our disbelief about her strength as well?

Im not saying women CAN'T be heroes, im saying that its hardly surprising having men in a role as heroes considering they are more suited to the task. I get that theres this femenist movement and PC bullshit where noone can be better than anyone else, but men should sometimes be allowed to be men.

I do see why people usually write men as heroes, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that, to a certain extent, real world physical disadvantages shouldn't be held against a character because action movies aren't SUPPOSED to be realistic. Still, I am troubled by the last statement..."men should be allowed to be men?" What does that mean? Obviously, I understand what you're trying to say, but does that mean a man's masculinity is determined by how many heroic stunts he's pulled? By the way, I know I'm totally blowing that statement out of proportion, I'm just trying to get my point across.

My point...
I look forward not to the day where women are equal in their 'heroic' role, but where the man can be masculine without numpty feminists asking where the female role model is.

Now, this part of the post I can actually agree with. Society's obsession with political correctness pisses me off. And frankly, I'm sick of "token" characters...I'd rather not have an African American character than have one who just stands in the background the whole time.

Still, I am troubled by the last statement..."men should be allowed to be men?" What does that mean?

We seem to be agreeing with the same points, just maybe outof sync.

But ill try to describe what i meant with your question. In the UK at the moment, there's an interesting topic concerning Action Men... (i guess the US equivalent of Gi Joe) and its revival. The big drama around it all is that the ministry of defence is supporting it. One of the major arguments against such a toy though is that it encourages boys to be violent or somehow seperates them from the girls and makes them act differently. Thats where my 'men should be men' comment stemmed from.

Its a real shame but in today's culture of metro-sexual masculinity and the world being overrun (imo) with the feminist message...men everywhere are having their balls cut off in view of equality. Again, im not against women having equal rights, but why should we refrain from embracing what makes men and women different. Why should men be ashamed of the physical advantages they hold over women?

I get that EVERYTHING in my posts in this thread can be very easily skewed if your of the uber-feminist equation, but thats not me. Im all for equal rights, but equal rights has the include the rights of men. Its not even a 'rights' issue anymore (at least in the western world), its a social issue, and its a big one. Men are slowly but surely not being allowed to be strong, not allowed to take control etc for fear of being unequal.

Im sure someone else will be able to express this viewpoint better than me... but all i mean is that men should allowed to be men, in the same way that every single day steps are being made for women to be women. Its a two way street. Equality isn't about women power...its about human power...which is why feminism sickens me.

Really?? I mean.... really you dont get it??

Let me explain it in Jr High speak...

"surely equality would be the point where we dont even care if the hero would be male or female, it wouldnt be a big deal."

Equality is a two way street. Equality truly exists when we have a world where this isnt an issue...its not a big deal.

"But if you want an answer to why their are less women than men in these types of roles ...its 'cause men are stronger."

To quote myself... sorry to break this to you, but men, on average, are stronger.

BUT you're taking this topic far too personally it seems - I absolutely agree with you 100% though
I suppose I can see your point, but still, Jack Bauer only wins every fight because he's written that way. In the real world, he would be killed easily by some of the guys he's pitted against, but we're willing to suspend our belief so that we think Jack could win.

I am staying out of this topic properly, except no one disses Bauer like that.

He's physically fit, he's trained to the highest military standard (he's ex Navy Seals), he is trained in multiple fighting techniques as well as many forms of self defence.
He has an ability to read people to work out how they figt.

Granted he is a fictional character BUT winning a fight is not just about brute strength.

So what? My point still stands. Someone built like Jason Statham should be better at swimming, running, boxing, fighting, jumping, and climbing than someone built like Keanu Reeves, but they still both manage to portray iconic action heroes.

I don't get what this point has to do with Silums rebuttal.
Silum stated that he wasn't referring to bulk, but then you go on to suggest Jason Statham would best Keanu Reeves at "swimming, running, boxing, fighting, jumping, and climbing".

Well Swimming, I don't know. To be as muscular as Jason doesn't mean you're in your physical peak and it doesn't mean that Keanu isn't either (or Keifer Sutherland).
Actually, Arnold Schwartzeneggar WAS in his personal physical peak back in the 80's and late 70's and I know he wouldn't have been a better swimmer than someone slimmer but in their physical peak, so maybe Keanu could beat Jason.
Boxing, well thats a physical sport, but its more skill than simply punching someone.
Running, well see my answer for swimming.
Fighting, see my answer for boxing.
Jumping, see my answer for swimming and running.
Climbing, see Silum.

I think the ONLY way we settle this - Keanu, Bauer, Statham and Silum put on a thong, get greased up and duke it out!

I almost forgot there was actual dialogue...all I remember hearing was Hugh Jackman screaming a lot.
Well to further exemplify Al's point...

here are the top two climbers in the world right now (Steve McClure and Chris Sharma)

07_05_003.jpg

ChrisSharma-byCoreyRich-07.gif

Both at the maxium 'strength' for their individual disipline, but as you can tell hardly bulky. My point is, the best woman is probably Lynn Hill..

lynn-hill.jpg

Yet physically, she has done very little compared to the two top male climbers. They climb around (this may very well mean nothing) 5-6 grades harder than her. In between male Sharma and the top female Lynn Hill lie around 300 or so top male climbers. Lynn is the outlier of a grouping of top end female climbers well below the physical limit of top male climbers.

Again, its not really the point i was making. View my posts for that, but those under the disillusion that the female heronie is the natural fit for the superhero need a reality check. In reality, they are the outlier in the same way that 'Lynn Hill' is the outlier. They DO however, make for great TV!

While I do agree on some points, I have to disagree with most of this post.

I think I'll start with this, since it's the main thing that got to me...

...which is why feminism sickens me.

The definition of feminism is "the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women EQUAL to those of men," and technically, you're saying that it sickens you how men don't have more rights than women. Still, I do understand that you're not trying to say that, and that's precisely why I'm off-put by super-hardcore feminism...they've completely changed people's idea of what feminism is.

While I do agree that male action heroes shouldn't have to be replaced with females, I also don't think that men should feel threatened or emasculated by strong women. I mean, aside from super hardcore feminists who feel the need to complain about everything, most women don't feel bothered by action movies that are male-dominated...for example, I wasn't bothered by Wolverine, even though the only female character in the movie was the love interest (although there is a good chance that I was blinded by all of the pretty men). Why can't men do the same with a female cast?

And regarding your comment about men not being ashamed of their physical advantages, I sort of agree, but I don't think that women should be depicted as weak in the process. The same could go for men...for example, women typically have a higher emotional quotient than men, but female-dominated movies and TV shows don't usually depict men as unsympathetic and blind (although to say that they never do would definitely be a lie).

Men are slowly but surely not being allowed to be strong, not allowed to take control etc for fear of being unequal.

I'm sorry, but that's kind of ridiculous, don't you think? Men are not, by any means, being drained of their masculinity. Women still aren't treated as equals to men throughout the world, and some day, if we are, men will still be allowed to be strong. It just won't be exclusively men.

Again, its not really the point i was making. View my posts for that, but those under the disillusion that the female heronie is the natural fit for the superhero need a reality check. In reality, they are the outlier in the same way that 'Lynn Hill' is the outlier. They DO however, make for great TV!

You know what? You're right. Clearly, female heroes are a disillusion because we are weak and can't climb rocks with such enormous finesse like you big, strong men. We are obviously the inferior gender and should just shut our damn mouths and start baking pies.

Comments like that are exactly the reason why hardcore feminists can be so insane. Because it gives people the disillusion that men are the only ones who can make contributions to society without being, as you put them, "care-workers."

I got everything I expected from Wolverine including very lame dialogue - I could rant for hours over why that film was crapola!
I wasn't bothered by Wolverine, even though the only female character in the movie was the love interest (although there is a good chance that I was blinded by all of the pretty men).

Thats an unfair comment for you to make because my response to that would have to be in spoilers!

First though, how could you NOT be bothered by Wolverine?
Aside from it being predominantly male, it was absolute shit that totally screwed over a) the comics b) the three X-Men films.

Secondly
the only female character in the movie wasn't just the love interest - she used her power as a woman to manipulate the lead character showing that she had power in the film, that she used her 'ability' to protect the person she cared about - her sister who was a poor Emma Frost by the way!

C
Crazy Flakes
Okay, lemme rephrase that...I did hate how much Wolverine sucked and how it ruined both Emma Frost and Deadpool, but I wasn't personally offended by it.
I didn't necessarily mean that Desperate Housewives women weren't strong I was just cracking what I thought was a funny joke. Although, what I do watch of it is irritating.. Women aren't like that, and I WOULD place them on more of a weaker side of the spectrum. Having incredibly caddy neighbors and sleeping with their husbands anyway doesn't make a woman strong. They can have their strong moments but ultimately that show is for ratings, not women power.
