What do you think it would have been like if Angel had met the Buffybot? Given all the programming Spike obviously had put in her to love Spike and hate Angel, I tend to think it might have been pretty hilarious. 🙂

What do you think?

I agree - It would have been hilarious! One of my favourite lines in Intervention is the Buffybot's programmed opinion of Angel, that he is:

"lame. His hair grows straight up and he's bloody stupid."

So yer, Angel's reactions would have been so funny!!

🙂

I can imagine it. I want to read it. The fanfic is practically writing itself in my head.

[Angel literally bumping into Buffybot while looking for a talisman in Sunnydale]

ANGEL: B-Buffy. I... I'm sorry. I mean, hi, how you've been? I'm sorry for not telling you I'm in town, there's kind of this case, I, I have to look for this thing, this talisman, to save some people. I... How've you been?

BUFFYBOT: I'm Buffy. You're Angel. I don't like you, my love for you was false, you ninny.

ANGEL: Buffy!? Buffy I know we argued last time we talked but this is-

BUFFYBOT: I'm sorry Mr. Redemption-Complex, but I have to go and have lots of sex with Spike. Stay away from me and my family, or you will meet my stake. Bye bye!

[Buffybot strolls of leaving a hurt and confused Angel]

Exactly!! LOL I thought of that line, and how Angel would react if Buffybot said that to him... LMAO Sounds like I have an idea for a fanfic. 😉

I very much doubt there would be any humorous conversation between them at all, because if Angel ran into the Buffybot, he would be able to tell instantly that it isn't Buffy. Seriously. He's a vampire, a detective, and Buffy is the love of his life. Something like this is not going to get past him. The BuffyBot wouldn't smell human, let alone like Buffy specifically, because there's no possible way that Warren, with his human sense of smell and the equipment in his basement, would be able to manufacture the scent of someone he's only met *once* accurately enough that a vampire who knows the person in question very well wouldn't be able to smell the difference between the robot and the real thing in a second. The closest Warren could get to making the Bot smell like Buffy would be incorporating the scent of whatever shampoo she uses, but I don't think that would cover up the plastic smell, and it definitely wouldn't make up for the lack of Buffy's natural body smell. Also, to a vampire's sensitive ears, she wouldn't sound human, she would sound like a robot, because gears and circuits do not sound like a heartbeat. And she doesn't actually act enough like the real Buffy (or a human being at all, for that matter) to fool anyone who's really paying attention, and Angel's always paying attention when it's Buffy. Not to mention she doesn't have his bite scar (since I'm sure Spike wouldn't want that to be included on his toy).

Once he knows she isn't real, it wouldn't be hard to figure out why a robot version of Buffy was made, because a) she'd smell far more like Spike than Buffy and b) she'd be alternating between insulting Angel's hair in British slang and dreamily gushing about Spike. So, the only thing I can see happening as a result of this encounter would be an extremely ticked off Angel finding Spike and beating the unliving crap out of him for demeaning and objectifying Buffy in such a disgusting way. And then, if Spike were stupid enough to be snarky and defiant about it, Angel might just go all the way and stake him, because he wouldn't have the same irrational problem with the idea of killing Spike while he has the chip that the Scoobies have.

Now, if Spike had commissioned Warren to make him a Buffy *clone*, it would be a different story, but I still think Angel would be able to tell the difference from the behavior and lack of bite scar, it just might take him a few seconds longer to figure it out. And once he'd finished beating the crap out of Spike, he'd try to do something to help the Buffy clone, because clones are people too.

I disagree, it could happen that Angel didn't see Buffybot wasn't Buffy, atleast for a limited amount of time. I see a lot of "couldn't ever happen" in your post, but fact is that Warren, who might also have magic to help him, was able to create a robot, so I wouldn't assume to know the limit of his skills.

Spike brought some of Buffy's stuff, it should be possible to get some smell of that. Warren might also be able to fake a heartbeat and make whatever robotics made Buffy tick soundless.

We should also take into account that Angel isn't always at his best. He can be stealthy, but we've also seen him slip and fall. Running into Buffy might make his heart and other parts ache, distracting him, not noticing that something's off. Maybe he even tries to "put his shileds up", closing her out so he won't get hurt. Or he does notice something is off, but doesn't know what.

I do however think he would figure it out a lot faster than the others did, specially since he would be more aware of her sooner of later for two reasons, a) he's in love with her, b)while the scoobies were used to having her around and didn't pay as much attention, Angel who hadn't seen Buffy in a while, might be more aware of her.

Once he knows she isn't real, it wouldn't be hard to figure out why a robot version of Buffy was made, because a) she'd smell far more like Spike than Buffy and b) she'd be alternating between insulting Angel's hair in British slang and dreamily gushing about Spike. Now this I agree on. I would have loved to see this in season 5, when Spike still bothered me more than amused me. And I never got why the scoobies didn't stake him.

I will accept magic as a possibility, because there's no way to prove he didn't use it since we didn't actually see the BuffyBot's creation process. However, I personally doubt that he used it, because he never produced any magic of his own, he hadn't teamed up with Jonathan and Andrew yet, and he only went to Rack at the end of S6 when Darth Rosenberg was after his blood. But I do believe *Willow* used magic to make the Bot indistinguishable from Buffy, sound and smell-wise, so that it would be a more convincing decoy while Buffy was dead.

I still don't buy that one guy in his apartment (especially pre-the S6 bank robbery funds) would have the resources necessary to exactly duplicate the scent of an individual human from the *very* trace amounts of molecules on a couple of articles of clothing she hadn't worn in months, and I'm not willing to simply chalk that up to it being a sci-fi/fantasy show, because even fiction needs to have internal logic, or it's just bad writing. I think Warren basically just got the Bot functional as well as visually and vocally accurate, then left the rest up to Spike's imagination. Spike was pretty desperate at the time (and doesn't seem like enough of a perfectionist to get this nit-picky in any case), so he probably didn't mind, especially when all he had before the Bot was Harmony and a mannequin with a blonde wig. As to the sound, we the human viewers could hear the Bot open its eyes when Warren activated it, so I definitely don't buy that he gave it a fake heartbeat but made it otherwise entirely soundless to vampire hearing.

I mean, honestly, if Warren couldn't get the Bot to exhibit normal human social behavior, let alone Buffy's individual mannerisms, then it seems like quite a stretch to give him credit for duplicating sounds and smells more precise than his own senses are even capable of detecting.

All very true. It seems unlikely that Warren would be able to fix all of that. I'm just saying never say never.

As for the use of magic, while he, Andrew, and Jonathan hadn't officially teamed up yet, it's quite possible that they knew each other, since they were shown in Season 6 playing D&D together. Maybe they had known each other for several years, or, for that matter, maybe they grew up together (Warren and Andrew, at least, since Jonathan was at least a year younger and was actually treated time someone who is relatively new to the group ) like Willow and Xander did.

As for Warren being able to reproduce Buffy's unique scent with only the facilities available in his apartment, use that sort of logic, and he couldn't have made the bot itself under those conditions. If Spiderman can sew his own costume, design and build his own web sprayers, and devise a spray that has greater tensile strength that steel, more flexible than silk, can be shot, accurately, at least 20 yards or more, and go from liquid to solid form almost instantly using only what materials that he can gather on an extremely limited budget, Warren can build the Buffybot from scratch, complete with heart beat, scent, mannerisms, and, for all we know, the proper DNA profile and even actual blood flow, just in case Spike might want to take a little nibble ("Oh, Spike, DEVOUR me!) at some point under the same conditions.

at least the movie Spidey retcons the webfluid as a "natural" part of his DNA rearrangement. does make more sense, in-verse.
I'm with Taaroko on this one, although I do admit some of the scenarios are funny. That is all. 🙂

Again, bad writing. The idea that he could even build a human-looking robot that moves and sort of acts human by himself in a couple of months tops in 2001 is completely absurd. The things you pointed out about Spider-Man don't make me okay with Warren's ridiculous robot-building situation, they just make me think less of Spider-Man too. I have issues with all the robots in the Buffyverse, with the possible exception of the cyborgs in "Lineage", because those were at least made by some kind of organization which definitely could have had the resources to do the job. I'm just saying that because Warren clearly failed to make the Buffybot's behavior entirely human (and specifically Buffy-like), it doesn't make sense to assume that he got other details like scent and sound 100% accurate. Unless he did use magic, which cannot be proven either way.

Taaroko I think it would be easier to re-create a human body than a human mind, since we know relatively little about the brain, but more about the body.

Well I do think that Angel would eventually realize it's not really Buffy. But seriously... Angel isn't going to be expecting that there's a Buffy copy out there running around; why would he just automatically assume it's not her?

Sorry about that. That was my half way sarcastic (toward the writers, not you) way of acknowledging your point. Unfortunately, if we don't exercise a certain amount of disbelief suspension, we might as well only watch "reality" shows, and I don't have a whole lot of faith in them either.

Most folks will tell you, I'm the guy who counts how many times the cowboy shoots his pistol before reloading, the one who notices that a character wears a wrist watch in Scene A, not in Scene B, and it mysteriously returns for scene C. And I agree, Warren and his Buffybot just couldn't have happened, but placed beside some of the other fantastic things that Joss has depicted, even disregarding the literal hoards of vamps and demons openly walking the streets of Sunnydale while the citizens remain oblivious unless attacked, Spike's little sex toy is a long way from being the hardest thing to accept.

For whatever reason, I always find it easier to accept the horror/fantasy elements than the sci fi ones, especially when the fictional universe is set in the present day in a world that pretty much seems to be our own except for the horror/fantasy elements. For that exact reason, I don't think I have a single plausibility complaint against Supernatural's lore. They never do sci-fi stuff, it's always horror/fantasy. And I can accept pretty much anything that happens in Doctor Who, because that's all timey-wimey spacey-wacey future alien tech. And in Bones, I don't know enough about forensics or visualization technology to have many complaints about their methods of murder-solving, though I've seen lots of complaints from others who know more about how that stuff actually works. But I was in the robotics club in high school, and I started out as a biochemistry major in college, so I know something about the limitations of modern robotics, how complicated the molecules involved in particular scents can get, and things like that, which means Warren's robots are something my suspension of disbelief will never succeed in covering, especially if I'm expected to suspend it even further to include the sounds and smells required to fool a vampire. *Unless* he used magic (which I don't think he did, but I can't prove it).

Nothing at all against the Supernatural lore? How about that people can survive a 100 years of torture without cracking?
-checks out all the debating on whether Angel would have immediately known it was not Buffy by the scent or whatever-

Can we all just agree that it would be bloody hilarious?
