What if Giles had died in Season Seven?

So, I was recently reading a fanfiction about Giles. It took place during Lies My Parents Told me, and in it, Giles died of a heart attack. This left me shocked and horrified, because the idea was kind of scary.
I read the autor's note, and in it, she explained that she thought that Giles should have been killed instead of he and Buffy's relationship crashing and burning. I disagree, personally, but it got me thinking. What are your opinions?

P.S. The idea of The First being able to use Giles against the Scoobies is horrible and sad!
 
Wow I'd never thought about that . . .and I think about this show a lot! 😀

It would have been very intense if the first could have used Giles to hurt the scoobies. But ASH would have done brilliantly with it.
 
I actually think it would have been great idea to send him off, but only if it were done in a more noble way because a heart attack is lame. Honestly a few people should have died in the final season. I think the threat of The First would have been taken a bit more seriously had a few main Scoobies died because alot of it seemed all talk.
 
although i absolutely loathe how they made the relationship between giles and buffy break down, i'm not sure i agree that he should have /died/ rather than that happen. but only because i love giles and it would have been so sad!

but the idea of giles as the first would have been brilliant. so maybe i would rather see that than what happened to him and buffy. i've never forgiven the show for that, actually--i think it was one of the worst decisions they made.

Actually, by the middle of the 7th Season, it seemed to me that Giles had pretty much used up his usefulness. He wasn't the leader anymore, nor the tactician, and most of his advice was either ignored or at not really trusted. Having him die and be used by the First, possibly without the gang even knowing about it for awhile would have worked better than the "Potential" who actually was the First, plus both Wood's attempt to kill Spike and the gang's betrayal in "Empty Places"would have made more sense. As for his role in Season 8, other than the "No Future For You" arc, he didn't have very much to do except to serve as the major character who Angel had to kill in the finale, and none of what he did do couldn't have been done by someone else Just imagine Faith teaming up with Andrew instead of Giles . (In fact, the whole idea of having a high school drop out from Boston portray a cultured member of upper crust British society sounds exactly like the sort of hare brained scheme that he would have come up with.)
