What if one wanted to expand the buffyverse themselves?

Leaving the "fanfic" mantle behind, in order to truly expand the mythical buffyverse, what if someone wanted to actually publish a novel that was supposed to be a missing puzzle piece to to the buffyverse akin to what Gregory MacGuire did with Wicked and the Wizard of Oz? What kind of logistics does that involve? And considering Nathan Fillon can't reboot firefly how can someone add to the AWEFULL universe that now contains so much....MEAT (or grilled tempeh depending on your preference), with the same epic fire that apologetically, fanfic does not inspire, without pissing anyone off....legally.

Would Joss an Co ever support such an endeavor?

This is what some people have done with, for example, novels like Go Ask Malice by Robert Joseph Levy that expands on Faiths past in the Buffy Verse. Although it is not officially condoned by Joss Whedon as being part of the "Story".

So you have freedom to develop a missing part of the story however you see fit, and if you make it interesting enough and good enough quality then there is a chance for it to get published. Fanfic is just like this except on a smaller scale and it is generally only shared on the internet rather than being published.
