So guys I found out the other week that Joss had plans to kill Oz, Oz was meant to get killed by Angelus in "Passion" instead of Jenny but he didn't as Joss thought there was so much potential. So do you think Buffy would of been different without Oz? How would season 2 and 3 be?

I think nothing much would change rather have angry Willow trying to cast spells a bit like Dark Willow but not just, she also do what Giles was like when he tried to take on Angelus himself. But to be honest I'm glad Oz didn't die as he was big part in season 3 and I don't think Jenny would of been good in season 3 so in a way I am glad Jenny died instead of Oz because I love Oz 😀

What you guys think?

At the thought of Oz dying my first thought was a phrase I learned from Girlfriends, "Shush your speak!"
The original plan was also to kill Jenny in Innocence -- that went along with Oz dying in Passion. So, take the two into consideration, and...

Wait, without Jenny, where would they get the method to restore Angel's soul?

If they came up with something to get around that idea, then by the time the show reached the middle of Season 4, it would've evened out and played out, from there, pretty much the same as it does already. If not... things become very different.

The biggest hurdle I see them having to cross is giving Willow a reason to try and restore Angels soul after he killed the person she loved. I cant see her wanting to try it once let alone a second time. Who knows though, perhaps they could have had Buffy kill him or send him to the demon dimension and still had him return as Angel like does in season 3 finding some excuse for why he has a soul again.

I was never a HUGE Oz fan although I didn't have any problem with him & I did enjoy his character quite a bit. I think they made the right decision though because I feel like Willow's relationship with Oz taught her alot & prepared her for the relationship with Tara.

I think that the series could've taken a totally different turn if Oz would've died instead of Jenny. For one I think Giles would've developed differently. Maybe he'd less uptight (don't get me wrong, I love Giles) and more secure and might not have left in season 6. I also think that Willow would've grieved Oz a lot and maybe had a different approach to relationships in the future when she got together with Tara. Maybe she would've treated her better if she had lost someone she cared about and knew that you have to take care of the time you have together.

I think Willow would still do it. One, she loves Buffy (platonically, and without the jealousy that makes Xander act like such an ass), and two, she's rational enough to see the difference between souled and unsouled Angel and pragmatic enough to realize that a souled Angel is a powerful ally.

I'm not sure how much would have changed without Oz, I really love the character but that early on - had he died - I think it would have been a powerful punch (had BOTH he and Jenny died) for the viewers. I'm glad he didn't, but storytelling-wise it would almost have been a better idea.

This is very interesting information that would have effected a great deal surrounding Willow.

* The inevitable breakdown of Willow's fragile character.

It seems likely that to lose the first boy who had ever been attracted to her would either completely break her down or turn her into something of her alternate reality counterpart. I could see her losing most of her rational sense and burying herself in dark magic with greif and guilt. The Willow we know who usually stands timidly at the sidelines might flared up into more of a fighter. If anyone here has watched Charmed recall the season 6 episode 'Witchstock', what turned anti-violence Flower Child Grams into demon ass-kicking Grams (before Paige had accidentally changed it)? She might possibly even consider if not attempt the ritual to raise the dead which has already been used by Sunnydale high students before.

* The restoration of Angel's Soul

Willow has always been a selfless, considerate and open minded soul but if Angelus had effected her so personally she would be more against him and less willing to restore his soul. To be honest I am not even sure Buffy would try to convince her. I can see her wanting his death for a while during her dark period which would result in more damage during the prolonged wait but Willow is the kind of unique and sensitive person who can see the big picture, the hidden victim in Angel and especially herself reflected in Buffy's loss of him. She would see the chance Buffy had that she did not, the chance to save her love. After all in the actual events Willow performed the ritual mostly of her own accord while Buffy had every intention of killing Angelus.

* Willow's relationship with Xander

With Oz gone I don't believe Willow would have been so resilient to the forbidden flame that had sparked between her and Xander. With nothing to hold her back anymore she probably would have fallen back onto her previous attraction to her long time best friend and the only other boy to whom she wasn't invisible or just 'the nerd girl'. Something certainly would have grown there, despite his respect for Cordelia I have to doubt she would have held Xander back from an unoccupied Willow.

Totally off subject but I must say I am annoyed that it's when she has a boyfriend that he FINALLY notices her that way! How could he have been so blond to her attraction to him!?

I don't think that would have changed but rather have occurred earlier.
Can you please explain what you meant that Oz's death was supposed to "go along with" Jenny's? Do we know the details of Oz's removed death?

Oz isn't one of my favorite characters, but he definitely was one of the character I enjoyed the most in the early seasons. So that is one of the reasons I'm glad he stuck around.

Now my problem, and the reason I'm glad they never went that route, is that if they would have made Willow's only bf die, and then Willow in s4 be like "eh, look I'm gay now", well then it re-enforces the stereotype that all gay people became gay after having a somewhat traumatic experience. Willow choosing Tara over Oz in s4 was great because it showed those were her true feelings, not her second choice by default because her first choice was gone. I think killing Oz would take away from Tara and Willow as a couple, so I'm glad it didn't happen.

They were going to kill Jenny in Innocence and Oz in Passion. When they spared Jenny in Innocence, that moved her death to Passion, which spared Oz.

Oz didn't contribute anything massive to the show in the grand scheme of things. Don't get me wrong, he's one of my favourite characters, but the reason for that is because he's one of those little things that make the show so great. The dialogue between the characters is so powerful, and Oz with his one liners are what make him as a character.

But as I said, in the grand scheme of things, I don't think anything would have turned out much differently. We wouldn't get the Oz/Willow arc in season 4 and that's about it. Obviously we would see a similar kind of reaction from Willow to what we saw from Giles. Giles moved on from that and I can see Willow (pre-magic Willow) doing the same thing.

Would Willow have gone dark?

She was a novice at this point in magical knowledge, but Tara and later Giles, as well as higher beings have made it clear that Willow's abilities are more innate than learned...

I think it would have been really interesting, Willow was a more selfless person at this stage, but I think it could have started her more on her part towards dark Willow.

Remember the original soul spell was a curse, out of grief she could have cursed Angelus with his soul, I could see it as (if Jenny was dead) Willow researched the spell herself and did it behind everyone's back.

It could have been a cool scene where Buffy is grateful, and Willow pushes her aside and tells Angel she hopes he suffers. Then she runs away to LA... that bit might be a stretch.

Willow probably wouldn't have left for L.A in season 7 to ensoul Angel for the second time.

I think Willow definitely would have tried to bring Oz back to life. She tried to force him to stay after he left with magic so why wouldn't she try and bring him back? Giles would have tried to get her to stop and actually teach her how to properly work magic thus no Dark Willow? Its a stretch but there's so much about Willow losing control of her magic that doesn't make sense. Like if Giles knew Willow was getting stronger with her abilities why wouldn't he try and teach her about the Coven and their philosophies earlier on?

I agree with this. Just recently I saw the episodes in season 4 where Oz left her and in her grief she did try to perform a spell to summon him back. It wouldn't be the first time that Sunnydale students have used the resurrection ritual. She also when no one would consider her heartbreak cast a spell to have her will.
