Remeber when Buffy ran away? Well what if she hadn't?
Buffy's running away put a strain on the whole friendship with the gang and the relationship between Buffy and her mom. Plus she was expelled so she had to fight to get back into school. I know that the gang smoothed out thier probs but their relationship wit Buffy was never the same. Not really...

Your thought...?

You must have watched FX today also...

I think what her friends did to her was horrible. She had been through such a traumatic time in her life, and they expected her to easily deal with it.

What Buffy said to Willow was true, "You can't understand" and Willow really couldn't (Not even in Season 6, because Buffy had to kill Angel, Willow didn't).

She was feeling so much pain, guilt and remorse. She saved the world, yet they give her crap? Seems wrong to me.

And yes it did seem that they were never as close. Even in Season 4 and 5, and especially in 6 or 7, Buffy wasn't close to them. To me, they didn't even seem like friends really. Maybe this did cause a permanet ripple?

I actually think her abandoning them without any kind of foremention is her own fault. Yes, they should have cut her a bit of slack, but it was partially her fault.
Yep I did watch FX today

Good points! That was exactly my thinking!🙂

Shw would have been expelled anyway, though, that happened in "Becoming Part II". I think if she went home, she figured she would have had to deal with a lot of questions from her mother that she couldn't think about just then. I think her mom would have given her time, though. I think That, even though it made it more difficult to return, it made Buffy a stronger person, and dedicated her mor to her mission to have a little hiatus and then come back full force.

If Buffy wouldn't have ran away, not many things would have been different. Joyce may have trusted Giles more, and she wouldn't have it hanging over her head all the time. But after they got all their feelings out in Dead Man's Party everything went back to normal.

I have to disagree with ya on that one. Sure, her running away put a damper on things in the beginning, but I don't think it hurt their relationships in the long run. Buffy was just starting to mature emotionally. Ex: She hides Angels return from Giles and the Scoobies instead of trusting them. She learned from that mistake too. As the seasons go on she learns more about facing her problems, and her friends. But I think if anything they were closer afterwards. :theman:

I don't think it ruined their friendship either. Most of s3 they were all really close. In s4 they started falling apart, but then got closer again.
And I wouldn't blame it on the others either. If I had a friend who just ran off, without letting me know where she was or if she was ok, I'd be pretty angry, hurt and everything else. I can understand Buffy feeling she needed to get away, but she could have let them know she was ok atleast.

What the Scoobies didn't realize was the tremendous sacrafice that Buffy had made to save the world. Willow had made it worse by doing the spell too late and too well..restoring Angel's soul just before she had to send him to hell to close the dimension.

I think it was completely selfish of the gang to treat her the way they did when she returned. Did they not trust her? She had done so much for them, given her life to save the world..then given her happiness when she gave up Angel's life to save the world yet again. You'd think they'd figure out she must have had a pretty darn good reason for leaving Sunnydale..that something pretty awful must have happened to her.

That's exactly my point.
And then if you please they went and unloaded all that the stuff on her. You know that intervention during the Hootenanny🙂
And her mom said if you leave this house never come back. Buffy no longer felt she was welcome. She saves the world all the time and they couldn'y cut her some slack? Willow said she understood why Buffy bailed but she never could because...
Well the only way she could understand was if she had to kill Oz to stop the world going to hell
The only one who wasn't completely selfish was Giles.

The gangs reaction to Buffy's leaving at the end of Season 2 and returning at the beginning of Season 3 have always confused me. I understand that they were worried and just wanted her back. And they even had a right to be angry at her for causing them so much worry. But what I don't understand is why no one wanted to spend time with her on their own. It was as if they couldn't be with her.

I know part of that was probably because they thought they couldn't relate to her any more. She had obviously gone through something that had changed her more than the others, making her even more mature compared to the others.

What really suprised me was Xanders reaction. I know it goes on to develop that in the rest of Season 3. But it shocked me at how angry he got towards Buffy.

If she hadn't have left, I don't think the gang would have been complecated. The arguements that arose in the opening of Season 3 showed a new side to the Scoobie gang, one that wasn't always happy and complete. It showed that they were still like regular best friends who argued.

Glad to know that I wasn't the only one furious about Willow and Xander's actions.

It seemed to me that like Jules said, it did make her more adult and made her more the Slayer. The gang has always gotten mad at her for cutting herself off, but they just never understood the things she went through, having your life turned around, being chosen as the Slayer at 14... thats gotta have a serious impact on you.

When looking at most of Season 4, 5 , 6 and 7, Buffy just don't seem like their friend. I mean yeah she was around them and she even lived with Willow, but she never really does friend things and even when she did, she was always cut off.

This leads me to think that although sometimes her friends coul help her, sometimes they could be an equal burden on her slaying.

OT: Did anyone watch All Men are Beasts today on FX, we could discuss that also?

I agree originalslayer. I think if Xander and Willow had accepted what Buffy had gone through at the end of Season 2 and would have welcomed her back in Season 3, Buffy wouldn't always cut herself off for her slaying. I think that if they had given her support rather than seperated themselves from her, she would have relied on them more. It was as if because of how they had reacted Buffy realised that her friends would never understand her slaying and what it did to her.

To be fair on Willow and Xander they didn't realise that she had killed Angel and not Angelus. But Angelus was still Buffy's love. As best friends they should have realised that even her killing Angelus would appear to her that she was killing her former love of her life.

Giles could tell that something was wrong with Buffy, yet her best frineds couldn't.

I think the reason Willow and Xander didn't wonna be alone with her, was cos they were scared they'd let all their anger out. they knew she had been through alot, and I think they tried to understand, but couldn't help being angry. And when Willow found Buffy trying to run away again, she just lost it. And then it started between everyone.
Giles has always been very understanding, not everyone can be like him. But I think he closes alot of his anger inside.
Some of you say that the gang haven't been as close since, but I think it's the other way around. if Xander and Willow hadn't let their feelings out, they could still be bottling their anger up inside of them. That's never healthy, and when people do that, it's always there, even though noone mentions it.
And I think they were also hurt by the fact that Buffy didn't come to them, she ran away instead. I don't think that episode made Buffy close her feelings more up, she's always been the type to wonna be alone with her feelings, and it often takes time before she tells her friends about things that worry her, and hurts her.
I think I understand them more because I know what it feels like to worry about someone you don't know where is. My bestfriend ran away twice, and the first time I had no idea where she was. I was worried sick, and I was angry at her for not letting me know where she was. And also for making her mother worry that much.
We don't know what happened with the gang that summer, there could be alot of reasons to why they were so angry, not only the fact that she didn't let them know where she was, and if she was ok, for months!
I understand Buffy's need to get away, but she could have picked up the phone to let them know she was alive!

I agree with the post above, I guess I never though about it like that🙂
But I stand by what I said before. The friendship between the gang was never the same...I think that's what made the gang's friendship so vulnerable for Spike to split them up in Season 4, and the Spuffy relationship in Season 6...remember that...she didn't think her friends would understand.
If this had never happened things would've been easier for everyone

I think they grew apart much later then in Anne. The rest of s3 they were all pretty close. In s4 they all went to college, and started growing apart. Buffy found Riley, Willow found Tara, and Xander had all his jobs and Anya. And Giles was without a job, and wasn't as needed as he had been. I think they all felt left out, and they didn't talk as much, which made it easier for Spike to split them up. but I don't think that had anything to do with Buffy running away in s2-3.
And her relationship with Spike, she's the one who doesn't trust them well enough to tell them. Yeah, ok, Xander took it bad, but then Spike had just been sleeping with Anya, and he was pretty upset already. Plus, he quickly came around and talked to her. And Willow didn't take it to bad either, she was shocked, but still didn't take it too bad.
Buffy has always been the kinda person that closes things in, even before Anne. Maybe the fight in Anne made it worse, it's possible, but i don't think it did.

AH yes. well we have to remember she didn't tell them right away that Willow had given back the soul. they thought angel was still big bad when she killed him. It would have been less of a sacrifice if he had because She was starting to get over him (a pox on my own words!)even then untill he was all like "i love you" and stuff.
