Alas what if...I love what if threads!

Of course Dawn couldn't have become a boy that would totally undermine the entire series. I mean Dawn's the next generation, it's all about women power and stuff like that and if Buffy would have had a brother rthere could be no sharing of the power. And in a really hardline feminist point of view her sacrificing her life in order to save her brother would look a lot different (and not as "glorious") from sacrificing her life for a sister.

I think that depends on the age...If he was the same age as Dawn, you're probably right, but if he was younger, like 10 or something, it would still have been as glorious I think...

Don't get me wrong I think that her sacrifice would've been just as big and glorious if she'd given up her life for a brother (a human life is still a human life). But when you look at the big perspective Buffy giving up her life for a man, any shape, size or age would be to bow down to the patriarcal society and that just isn't very Buffy like to do. I mean she didn't even take orders from Giles.

Hmm well one thing off the top of my head would be the whole Spike Dawn dynamic. It probably wouldn't have been the same.

Then, Buffy and Dawn as sisters are so close. Sisters in general can be so close. (Like my sis and I, we are BEST friends.)

Also, making her a teenage girl, there's the whole 'protecting' factor, would everyone have felt as protective over a guy? I'm not too sure. Interesting question though I'll have to think about it more!

there is also a whole thing with teenage girls i think.. the wibe(sp?) and the character traits you can pullout of the stereo types.. and all the things jenny said about it.

i think it would be a bit strange with a boy... and like jenny said, girls tend to get a bit closer in away...

i think of it was a boy, instead of dawn, they might have tried to make some crush stories.. maybe he would fall in love with... anya, or maybe even glory herself?


TO MY JOLLYAPE COMMENT: i misunderstood you!!! i ment that it's true that if she sacrefised herself for a boy... it would be the same thing, cause family is family..... i don't really agree all that much with the rest... i mean... i think if she had a brother instead of a sister, she would still jump... he would still be family, i don't think his gender wuold really stop the family feeling at that point"sorry hun, you have a wrong body part, i won't die for you..." i can't really imagin that senario.. if you get my drift. sure she won't take that many orders from giles, but then again, she doesn't really take orders from ANYONE, man or woman... i don't think it has to do with gender on that point. so i take back my true true here 😉 i sorta see Buffy as a family girl... and she will go to great lengths to keep them alive and kicking... so a brother wouldn't have changed it.. even if you put men-woman and power "struggle/domenation/history" into the contex. (the last i tried to put alot into a small thing 😉)

I guess you are right after all she is a family girl. To clarify what I said or tryed to write. Buffy as a person/character would most certainly do a thing like that, that's the type of person she was. She'd sacrifice anything and everything for friends and family, but it's not a very writer thing to do. I don't think the writers would ever have her do a thing like that. Buffy herself was never big with the message thing, but the persons whoi wrote the show were kind of good a placing little messages here and there and they wouldn't write something that could be interpreted the wrong way, they were all to intelligent for that and they knew there methaphores.

If Dawn was a boy, that would have put an odd story line in the "Don has a crush on Xander" storyline... Buffy has a gay brother. Hmm... (?)

LoL I fell in love with the Kitty Fantastico eating Goldie and becoming the key then the bug biting it and becoming the key. That's great haha. That'd make for an excellent season, aye? LoL!!!

Maybe Buffy's brother could be the first male-potential! The first male slayer is gay!

It certainly would've been different, but wouldn't have worked nearly as well considering the essence of Buffy is women with power (and in Dawn's case, with a power she can't comprehend or use).

Still, can't anyone remember the LAST time a young boy had a recurring role on Buffy? A brother would almost certainly become the next Annoying One.

I prefer Dawn and the whole sisters relationship but a brother would have been likely to see too.
