Ok, let's say the writers decided to make Xander gay instead of Willow way back in the 4th season. How would you have felt?

But for the shows own good artistically, it could have worked out well, he is a little gayish!

But then Willow wouldn't have been gay, which was also a very good move ... though one!

But as of a whole, the issue is still not totally excepted, but since men all like lesbians, this is for the best, for the ratings!

I gotta say, this is something that absolutely bugs the heck out of me. Part of me feels like the whole lesbian thing is to gratify Joss' fantasies, and hardly anything to do with showing a healthy relationship. I don't know about other heterosexual women, but I find it...disturbing...that guys are so turned on by lesbians. As for Joss, it's one thing to have a lesbian couple that homosexual people can relate to, but to have it to please heterosexual men is just disturbing. It's almost as if it's just one more form of exploiting women to portray a lesbian couple for the pleasure of heterosexual guys. It's none of their business either, what goes on in the bedroom.

In another thread, someone brought up how Andrews sexuality is portrayed differently from Willow's. Andrew's sexuality is always alluded to as a joke, we always get a laugh from it. That never happened with Willow. It does seem to send a double standard.

I'm not trying attack anybody, more than anything I'm trying to understand this.

A lesbian friend once asked me, what is up with men and lesbians ... here's my theory

woman equals sexy

lesbians equal woman times woman

conclusion:

lesbians equal sexy square

... voila there you have it, that's why we like lesbians more then you!
 
Yeah, I understand that, I just don't think it is a good reason to portray lesbians. I mean, I just wonder if your lesbian friend is bothered by it, and bothered by the portrayal of lesbian relationships for ratings from guys. It's just kind of icky.
 
I don't think it is done for guy ratings, the mayority of the shows viewers are female, we know it, Joss knows it, Fox knows it, they sure don't want to alienate those viewers, I think he did it from the creative perspective! and not for viewer ratings!
 
Oh my god!!! I cant imagine that! Xander belongs with Anya! Even imagining him gay makes me wanna throw up!
 
i think the reason Andrews sexuality comes through as a joke, is because everything about andrew is kind of like made fun of in everuy way
we never get to take him seriously
and the fact that he doesnt sort of openly come out with it is supposed to be amusing because hes so incompetent he cant even get his sexuality right ( im saying right, as in knowing it, not right as in straight is good, gay is bad you know)

well as amusing as it was to hear him say 'gay me up' i cant really see it
for willow it was a natural progression
wicca has always been about the strength of women and coming together in strength gaining power and she took that furtheer, seeing the strength of spirit in willow etc and realising she was gay, like learning about the magics and the power within herself allowed her to open up and see her true self and stuff
im probably saying this all weird

but basically i voted for the either way it doesnt matter option
because he could gay or straight and id still love my xander!

i vote that i would have hated it. i like it much better where he keeps falling for demons.

plus i think lesbians are generally more acceptable in society overall than gays. guys love em, and women seem to tolerate them really well.

also, if xander would have turned gay, joss would have probably been sued for portraying stereotypes, seeing as how xander works construction 😉
 
I wouldnt care but then it would probably raise alot of controversy among alot more ppl and mightve dropped their male viewer ratings cause well when it comes to males being gay, alot ppl for some reason just seem to be more agianst it
 
I rather willow being gay then xander. It would definetly have changed his whole character being gay., not that theres anything wrong with it, just that gay man are sort of portrayed differentlty on tv then women.
Anyway i think it fit willow better to be gay then xander
 
I think it portrayed lesbianism very well, it made me want to be one. Certainly wouldnt wanted xander to have been gay.
 
yeah...the concept of a gay xander is an intriuging one...ya couldn't though...he like tapped almost every girl on buffy...that wouldn't be right...if anything...he's the most heterosexual man on buffy...
