What if Xander was Gay?

I read in somewhere on web that Joss was undecided for a while about whom to make gay. He had two options; Xander or Willow. We all know that who he chose. What if he chose Xander? What would have happened; the reactions towards it in the gang? Would the writers be generous about sex and kissage or flirting scenes like they were in Willow's case? Who would be the lover of Xander?

That would have been cool if he chose Xander. Xander's very slahable. 😉 I think Xander's lover would have been a new character, since Willow's was, but that's just a guess.

I think it wouldn't have worked as well, because there are quite a number of guys who don't like seeing gay people (though they tolerate their existance,) but it's sort of a fact that guys like seeing lesbians... it's a rather complex thing... but it seems like we males all suffer from this. With this in mind, I think Joss made the right decision.

It wouldn't have worked half as good. Xander was a very different sort of character.. Plus he was like the only guy (except for Spike), so I don't know but.. it would've been weird. Plus, there are so many more gay guys on TV shows and in movies so I'm really glad they had a gay girl instead, heh.

Plus I'm not sure I'd say they were "generous about sex and kissage or flirting scenes" when it comes to Willow, I mean we see none of it for more than a year after Willow/Tara got together (if you don't count the magic-scenes, that most people didn't even realize were sexual).. and there are, what, two sex scenes if you count the floating of Tara in OMWF, heh... (And one post-sex scene...)

I think they went the right route with choosing Willow as the gay character. I think given what we had seen through the first three seasons it would have been too forced to suddenly believe Xander really had been gay all that time. With the exception of the mix up with Larry there was absolutely no suggestion that Xander liked guys. Even his vamp self in The Wish didn't seem to have any homosexual tendencies whereas Willow's clearly did.

It just seemed a hell of a lot more believable to me when Willow came out than it would have done if it had been Xander.

Yeah Willow had those "wibes" going on way before season 4.. And Xander sure hadn't..
It would have TOTALLY worked! Although I loved Tara/Willow, I think Xander and whoever his love interest was would have been would have been just as cute.

There's a double standard when it comes to homosexuals. More people are accepting of Lesbians than they are of Gay men. I think it may have negatively affected viewership if they had gone the Xander route, but you never know.

Also, I never saw the possibility of Xander being gay. Like The Watcher said, Willow's gay tendencies clearly came out when she was a vamp, meanwhile Xander became ubermasculine and aggressive.

Unfair but true, i think lesbians are more accepted than gay men, good point

Am I the only one who doesn't see this..? A lot of people say this but, seriously, if you look in movies and TV shows, there are so many more gay guys, than girls, and no one seem to care at all.
And in "real life"... I know there are a lot of guys who find lesbians hot for some reason, but other than that..? Most girls I know love the idea of a gay guy friend.. And even though some straight guys have problems with gay ones... I haven't seen a lot of that either.. Not that most people are "againt" lesbians either, it just always seemed to me like gay guys are way more accepted..

Hmm not really... cause if you look at figures of gay ppl being injured or beat up for being gay, they're mostly guys.
Speaking on behalf of the heterosexual male population of the world i would have to agree with Cordelia.

Whilst i personally have no problem with gay men (which is probably handy because one of my best mates is gay) i have found it to be true even here in the UK that straight guys have no problem accepting two girls having sex but find it disgusting to even consider two guys together.

Obviously this is not a sweeping statement but it think it's fair to say that it would be true for the majority.

To be quite honest, I really don't think it would've worked in terms of the dynamics of the show. Strictly speaking for ratings and the like, IMO, I think most viewers would probably not have accepted Xander as being Gay. I'm not sure if it's a fact but like Cordelia and The Watcher pretty much said, more people are accepting of Lesbian relationship's than Gay ones.
I myself wouldn't have had a problem with Xander being Gay, but I think it worked out better with Willow turning Gay. That's just my opinion.

On the whole note of lesbians vs gay people, I once used to have a lesbian couple in my immediate circle of friend, whom I tried to explain:

girl = sexy
two women = girl + girl = sexy + sexy = 2 sexy
two lesbian = girl x girl = sexy x sexy = sexy[sup]2[/sup]

So, there you have it, lesbians are more sexy than normal women. Since guys aren't considered sexy, gay's aren't considered extra sexy either, and may be detested for any number of reasons, most probably out of fear or social pressure I'd say.

It would have been different, yeh. I can see what you are all saying that people seem to accept lesbians more.

His lover would have been someone new, or maybe Larry. *Gasp* Or Andrew!!

Still, I really loved both Willow and Tara, so they made the right choice in my eyes.

Lol!

Thanks for doing the math for us, Allycat! I can't agree that guys aren't sexy, tho. Guys are WAY sexy! Not all of them, of course.....I can't find anything sexy in Mr. Joe Redneck scratching his beer gut and has three rotten teeth in his skull, you know.....but for the most part, I can usually find something I consider sexy in a guy.

Well, it was from a severly generalised male perspective Miffed67. So, some people (especially the non-Lesbian females) might still find guys sexy.

Maybe it's just the states, but I think there is more crime against Gay men, and you'll very rarely find a straight man who's as accepting of gay men as he is appreciative of Lesbians.
Yeah I'm not saying it's not true.. Just, people talk way more about gay men, and we see a lot more of them. Maybe that's why it's bugging people.. I don't know.
Yeah but there are more crimes in general against men.. except for family-related abuse, rape and such...
Ah well, you're probably right though, I'm just saying that in TV shows and movies there are already more gay guys than girls so.. glad they made Willow gay and not Xander..

That would be really kind of awesome! Here are some of my reasonings:

1. I'm a really big Spander Shipper. Spike and Xander are awesome together, my friend Sosa Lola and myself...we really like Spander!

2. Xander/Angel - Gosh, they're awesome together, great couple, awesome fantasy.

See, it would be awesome if Xander was gay! Atleast that's what I think.
