What is a Buffy fan?

No one questions if you belong to a football/soccer fan club or something similar that is widely accepted.

I wouldn't compare it to be a serious fan of a tv-show but no one? We sure must travel in different circles. It's more accepted yes but I've come across a lot of people thinking it's totally insane being devoted to a sportsclub of any kind. They have a catch phrase you know. 😉 "It's only a game." Usually don't go down well with the fanatics. I can understand if people don't get it but my mood can be very affected depending on some sportresults. It's a bit better now than when I was younger though. And I can't compare to those who fantically follows a certain team.

The people I have met usually don't see much difference in liking a club or sport or wanting to be home a certain time to watch a specific show. It's when the interest gets a little further than that people is starting to questioning it in different degress.

I'd have to agree with TK that some people do question sports fanatics. I'm one of them. I enjoy watching sports sometimes, but it's not going to effect my life at all if some team of people I've never met in real life wins or loses. I actually find it funny that people get that worked up about it. It IS only a game, really. And if they can't tolerate other people's fandoms, why should I respect their equally irrational obsession?

Your friend must be confusing Buffy fans with a-holes? I don't know. Honestly, sports fans are the most condescending people who refuse to understand other things. Sports! Woo-hoooo! Or maybe I've just met some rotten eggs. Usually though, if a sports fan tries to talk sports with me they seem almost offended that I have nothing to say about sports. Then they ask about my interests and give me some confused look. Which I don't get, because I don't understand the appeal of sports. To each his own, I guess. Either way, I don't care about how people spend their free time... I don't exclude people because they like certain things, all I care about is whether we get along. Same with religion--I'm religious but have plenty of friends who aren't. Just depends.

It's not like I just sit around and watch Buffy all day; and when I do just sit around and watch Buffy all day 🙂cheering🙂 I don't just turn off my head. I think I've learned a lot from the show and if anything I think I've become a better person because of what I've seen on the show--I think that I'm more accepting, more tolerant, etc, then I ever was before watching an episode of Buffy.

In my opinion, Buffy fans are some of the smartest people I've met. It turns TV into more than just a "boob tube". Two of my (very smart) professors love the show--and anyway, I don't think you can gauge someone's intelligence by their favorite shows or whether they watch sports. Think of some of the dumbest, most mindless shows that you can, and I bet I can find you a handful of college educated people that love to watch them. But still, Buffy = smart; Buffy fans = smart.

Anyway I posted a response to a similar thread on TV.com. It may be worth checking out, maybe not.

Sometimes fanatics can be a bit... crazed. But judging from this forum and numerous other great ones, most of them are just attatched, like me, and have found something they love.
