What Is a Demon?

I know I've brought up this subject before, but I simply cannot stop thinking about it. Ever since I've been watching shows like CHARMED, BUFFY and ANGEL, I've been wondering about the true description of a demon. So, to satisfy my curiousity, I checked the "Webster Dictionary".
Now, according to the dictionary, "DEMON" means a devil or an evil spirit. The primary description of "DEVIL" is the chief evil spirit. I find it interesting that both words seemed to indicate that a "demon" or a "devil" is basically non-corporeal or a spirit, and not a corporeal being. This seems close to the Vodoun belief of what a demon is . . . an evil spirit.
However, I discovered another word for demon and it is "DAEMON". According to the dictionary, it means any of the secondary divinities ranking between gods and men. Or, it is a guardian or inner spirit. Or a demon/devil. Aside from the last description, the word "daemon" does not seem to hint whether it refers to good or evil. And I find this interesting.
Judging from these descriptions, I cannot help but wonder if BUFFY, CHARMED or ANGEL just how inaccurate their portrayals of demons are. If the beings who have opposed Buffy and the Scoobies, the Charmed Ones and Angel and the Fang Gang, are corporeal, they cannot really be demons. So, exactly what are they?
