What is 'Canon'

I dare say that some writers of fan fic don't use storylines from the comics because some of the stuff that happens in the comics is weird. Dawn is a giant, how do you put that in a fan fic story?
Personally I don't bother with the comics at all, not because of the stories but I found the artwork poor.
As for this canon issue, I don't follow it at all. I liked the show and that was enough for me.

This debate on what is or isn't canon aside.
Who controls the slayer line, has that ever been stated? Because I saw whoever it is as all powerful, but then they allowed Buffy to continue as the slayer when Kendra was the slayer and also when Faith was the slayer. Why?

In the first artwork I saw, you couldn't tell Buffy from Willow.
Canon is whatever Joss says is canon - and, for me, that includes the TV shows, S8, S9, A&F, After the Fall and all the minis that came in between. Still not sure where I fall on Spike: After the Fall, or Asylum and the like. Joss has never spoken out about them as far as I'm aware.

I also, personally, consider The Origin comic to be canon, as well as Tale of the Slayers and Tales of the Vampires and Slayer, Interrupted, the comic that deals with Buffy's time in the institution she talks about in 'Normal Again'.

Absolutely, thats something I can totally get, you don't like the comics you can ignore them.

It's just...debating what is and what isn't canon, that's just so blah, like something Star Wars geeks would do or something. We're the cool kids, right? We're Buffy fans, we're just...too cool for this.

I would think people in fan fiction not using the comics could also be because the story is ongoing, they can't use it as they can't predict where its going till its gone there.

I don't think that's something that ever stopped a fan fiction writer.

Yeah, I mean, I don't really feel the need to debate what's canon. It is whatever Joss says it is. Now if people only want to discuss things in the framework of the tv show itself, that's fine with me. But I don't really see a debate out there to be had about what is canon, since the show's creator has already told us.
