Question What is "family friendly"

Ok, so I'm perfectly aware that I speak from a Scandinavian p.o.v. here, so this may be blindingly obvious for the admin, but I'll ask nonetheless: What does "family friendly board" mean? I've noticed that it comes up occasionally when fanfics are discussed, to me it seems that we are not allowed to talk about sexually explicit fiction. But honestly, with the level of sex and violence that any kid allowed to watch Jossverse shows will see, I can't really understand the problem. To me, what happens between two consenting adults is the least scary the 'verse has to offer.

If someone would bother to clarify what's meant with "family friendly", I'd appreciate it.
 
To me, 'family friendly' when it comes to fanfic, means not linking to anything rated above PG13. Yes, there are sexual situations on the show, which, if a person under the legal age can watch and understand, then they shouldn't have problem reading about it, but when it comes to fanfic, the writers aren't like the writers on the show. The situations in a fanfic can be far more sexual and dark than anything we see on the show. There are also slash fic writers, wherein the writer's main pairing is male/male, for example, Spike/Xander, and in these fics, they can, and often do, get extremely dark and graphic in nature, and content like that is definitely not suitable for children. The boards cannot be seen to be promoting material of this nature to anyone under age, which is why we're asked not to link directly to any sort of fic like this, or in fact, any fic rated over PG13.

Perhaps something that is PG or PG-13 rated? I agree though, the fact that this board is 'family-friendly' seems a bit contradictory at time, considering the very show we are discussing had some pretty explicit sex in it (Season 6).

Basically, I've gotten in trouble for posting fan fic with "adult" themes in it, so be careful.
 
Well even though the show is sometimes very dark and definitely not for kids, I think that asking everyone to be "family friendly" on the boards is just to try to be considerate of the fact that there are some very young members who might not have been allowed to watch the more sexual parts of the show. 😉

I wouldn't call it contradictory simply because while some scenes in the show (especially season 6) are displaying sex scenes in a fairly frank way the majority of it is merely suggestive. We don't actually see anything. We see Buffy and Spike against the wall in Smashed and the next time we see them is the following morning in Wrecked. What happened in between is implied, however, in fanfic what happened between Smashed and Wrecked would be described in explicit detail. Even in our discussions about these scenes we don't speak explicitly about the scenes, we talk around them.
 
Yeah some of those fanfics are seriously kinky, and if I had a kid I would not want the reading them. Some of them are like hardcore BDSM pornography in the form of written words. So yeah, don't be discussing them. Kids who maybe as young as 12, 13 or 14 maybe end up reading them, and that can't be good.

True, and even if you don't link to something of that nature the link you do post could very easily lead to it, especially if it is a fic on LJ.

I think we just need to moderate ourselves, potentially this is more effective than any rating system. If you had a 13 year old daughter and you wouldn't want them to read it, don't post a link to it. Of course speaking for the younger generation, a lot of teens nowadays in the 14- 16 year old range have seen things that older people can't imagine so it's all relative.

Agreed. Well, I will only link to stories (for example, in my Spuffy thread) that have only a bit of adult language - no sex!

If people are looking for PWP, I'm sure they know where to find it.

Thanks. But I'll run the risk of being a little troll-y, and ask again: Is sex really all that family-friendly is about? When I try looking at the show from my parenting point of view, even the more explicit scenes of S6 feels easier to discuss than - say, several parts of "The Gift". This doesn't mean that I don't get why we shouldn't link to fictions of the kinds mentioned over, I don't even like them myself, I'm just pondering the whole family-friendly concept.
 
I'd suggest that it doesn't just apply to sex but to anything that 'technically' - not based on personal opinion - shouldn't be shown to younger people. And to be honest, not just younger people; I don't like to click on a link and be taken to something explicit/graphic/violent, it's not just about protecting younger members but not exposing any one to something they might not be comfortable with. That's what I always bear in mind when it comes to "family friendly" 🙂
 
Basically, everyone should feel that this is a safe, comfortable place for them to post. It's not about saying, "Don't talk about sex!" It's that it's not necessary for us to use graphic, explicit or obscene language of any kind here. People shouldn't come on the boards and have to look at naked pictures of Charisma, for example, or read fan fic that amounts to porn, see people cybering in the RPG, or have to read posts where every other word is f*cking. I would consider it asking people to post in an adult and intelligent manner.

We've all been on boards where anything goes, and they're just not friendly places to be.

Well, yeah, I mean, in real life I use swear words, I'm not offended if others swear around me, but it's just unnecessary here and in excess it really changes the tone of the board. This is supposed to be a step more formal than a chat room.

woops i may be a little guilty of this ^.^
As for swearing, I've always thought that what was acceptable on the show is acceptable on here? Is this correct?
 
^ From my past experience here, going with three famous Spike B-words, "bloody" seems totally ok, "bollocks" is just about passable if used in moderation, but "b*tch" already gets frowned upon. So our favorite bleach blonde biter (gah, see, now I'm stuck on that letter, lol!) might have got himself an infraction here talking the same way as on the show. 😉
