What is the best and worst era in music?

I pretty much love 40-90's some of the 00's most definetly the worst has to be '10. Don't get me wrong I still like some of the new stuff but "gnam style" really?? It's crazy to see how much music has changed over the years. Kind of sad that it will never go back to what it was. :dance:

soo agree with you on this one! 40s to 90s were the best for sure.
There's bad music like that in every era, it doesn't make it representative of every genre of music within that time frame.

There's a lot of good music out these days, it's just not necessarily in the charts or Youtube sensations.

But yeah, I like the post-punk/cheesy pop of the 80s through to the 90s grunge stuff.
 
In my personal taste, the best era for music was from the mid-to-late 60's, although there's been a lot of good music in every era.

The existence of autotune automatically makes the current era the worst ever for music. Though the late 80's probably comes close.
 
Late 60's and the 70's is my personal favorites.
So much brilliant music was made back then.

I hate the 80's. It seemed like every great band from the 70's lost it there.
AC/DC, Status Quo, Black Sabbath etc. so many of my all-time favorites did their last really brilliant stuff in 1980 or very close to it.
Some of them managed to come back, doing some decent music again in the 90's though...

I love music, so there's hardly ever a whole era that I don't like. I love the 80's and 90's music. I think if I had to choose one era as a "least favorite" though I'd pick the 70's. It was such a crazy mix of disco, rock, and crap like The Carpenters.
 
My personal favorites would probably be late 60's and 70's, and the early 90's. So many great bands and artists came from those eras. My least favorite would have to the 00's and '10. There's good and bad music in every era, but the current state of popular music sucks big time. It all sounds exactly the same. No variety, no different chords, nearly all autotuned. Even scientists agree.

But I truly believe it's just a cycle. Nowadays, dubstep and electronica music rules the music world, but it's only a matter of time before the next new thing comes along and shakes things up. It always does. 🙂

As always there are good and bad music made in every era and it all comes down to personal taste. Personally I find the era of jazz and blues to create generally the best music. The level of quality and skill was amazing (not saying everyone was good but y'know...). Like the radio guy on the jazz channel in GTA IV says "from a time when musicians could actually play their instruments". Now this is far from the truth but I can't help but smile a little bit.

I do like the 90's a lot too. The best rock and alternative bands were definately made in that decade. I am split when it comes to the 00'. I watch with fear as dubstep, techno, hard style and whatnot moves through the mainstream and gathers crowds that are uncomparable. However, the music that I mostly listen to (instrumental rock, math-rock and experimental rock) is having a great time, becoming more popular and AMAZING bands have emerged the last few years.

So it depends, 00's mainstream sucks, but the underground shines with light.

Aren't we hypocrites though? We always used to blame our parents for being conservative and not appreciating the great music being made when we grew up, and now we are watching with despise and stubbornness as a new type of music is becoming hip.

Either way, great music is being made all the time, you just gotta know where to look.
 
My favorite is 90's because that's when I grew up & that's when Britney first started. She's my ultimate favorite & always will be.

As far as my least favorite, I'm not quite sure cuz I love some music from all eras.
 
If you ask 50 people that question,you'll probably get 50 different answers. My mother always said that American popular music started going downhill once the troops came home from World War 2 and never recovered. I wouldn't go that far, but I sure do miss Elvis.
 
60s and early 70s for sure.
80s was horrible. I am embarrassed I came from that generation lol
 
There has never been a better period for music than the one we're living in now. This is a fact, even if your personal favorites are from a different era. We live in the digital age, which means we have access to just about anything we could possibly want to listen to. And, sure, you might not be love with Gangnam Style, but the beauty of this age is we aren't limited to the trends of right now. Look at websites, listen to sample on itunes. There's someone out there making something you'll love, whatever your tastes, RIGHT NOW. And you can have it at the click of a button, often without even paying for it.

I agree, but what I meant was new music that is being produced now.
But I think what's different about music right now is that you have to dig so hard to find the good out of all the garbage. The biggest artists of today are people that would have been one hit wonders 20 years ago.

More choice is good but the problem is that there is so much crap being produced and popularized by spin and flash rather than talent that the truly talented people get left behind in obscurity while people who can't sing become superstars

It's like tv: there is a ton of choice but there is also a ton of crap - in the past more money and time could be spent on a show whereas today so much needs to be produced that it has to happen cheaply and be instantly successful.

A very good point. I also think that a lot of it is to do with your personal tastes. For instance if you are into that dance/house nonsense (clearly I am not) then perhaps the 90s was the better era for you as that is when it hit its peak.

For me, I grew up with mullet rock and a bit of boy bands. Yes I liked my Bon Jovi and Iron Maiden but I was also quite partial to Take That, but you would never get me listening to One Direction.

It has been a long time since I was excited about a new album being released, then Green Day introduced Uno and Dos and instantly I was reminded of the impact that music has over me.
