Obviously I could look up wikipedia or something, but I'm sure it'd be a tehcnical explanation, I'm looking for the laymans tongue on this one.

Ok, I actually did look up wikipedia and I still have no idea what the hell this twitter thing is. I'm seeing it referenced every fricken where though.

Someone fill me in.(not that way ya gangsta)

It's like facebook updates/statuses, but without facebook. Or anything else.

You mean its just another site for talking to people? What are they called, is it social networking site, or something like that.

Seriously, that's it? You make an account, and then you can talk to other members of the site? That's lame. How do these sites generate so much buzz? They have almost no function at all. Surely all you need is one of these sites, to be a member on one of them, and boom you're good to go.

It's good for following updates on the lives of people you find interesting - not just people you know, celebrities too. Plus, it's easier, cleaner, and less ad ridden than Facebook and Myspace. It's also very portable, being easily accessed and used on a mobile or iPod.

Basically, it's an easy way to let people know what you are doing, and to find people who are interested in the same things as you are. Little things that wouldn't generate forums and the likes.

From the outside, Twitter looks really ridiculous and pointless. It wasn't until I signed up and started following people that I really got it.

It's not just a social networking site the way Facebook is. You can barely customise your profile, and your updates will quickly move down the page as everyone else's come in, so there's no room for ego. It's not really about you or about any one person; it's about what a whole bunch of people are doing and thinking right this minute.

It's like plugging into a kind of goodnatured chattering hivemind. If you only go onto it to post your own updates, and only follow people you know, you won't get a whole lot out of it. Sign up, follow Stephen Fry, Graham Linehan and Rainn Wilson, then look for your friends. Then follow your friends' friends, and whoever they're following, until you're following about thirty people at least. Then watch them go about their day. It's kind of hearteningly hypnotic to watch thirty people's minds tick over. Some of them think about the same stuff, some of them think on completely opposite ends of the spectrum, but it's a fascinating snapshot of what's going through everybody's head just now.

The celebrity part of it is, I have to admit, a big part of the attraction. Christopher Walken's Twitter, although clearly fake, is freaking genius. Jimmy Carr's really is Jimmy Carr, and is a genuinely brilliant look into what it's like to be Jimmy Carr. Even if you hate his comedy, I can't recommend his Twitter enough, it's fantastic. And I can't help it, when somebody I idolise responds to me, I do grin like a giddy fool.

I have twitter I generally use it to follow other people like Stephen Fry 🙂 its interesting if you keep up to date and follow people's twitter because you get to kind of know them in a weird round about way. lol

Oh, and if anyone isn't already, using something like TweetDeck: a simple and fast way to experience Twitter makes it so simple and managable, especially if you follow lots of people. It means you don't have to stay chained to the website, it automatically fetches tweets for you every few minutes, and you can see all your tweets, @replies and Direct Messages at the same time.

LOL a friend just tried to get me to downland that! creepy.

It really is pretty pointless. The only reason I ever really use it is to mass text my friends and only get charged once. LOL

Edmund Blackadder agrees: I get upto 1100 free texts and I rarely contact more than 5 people at one time

Really? When I do mass texts I'm usually sending to at least 10 or 15...

I have twitter but I'm in agreement with the 'Stay away' concept. When I first joined I ended up typing a few things into it, but it's not really all that interesting. All you do is update your status which you could easily do on any other social networking site but you get more out of those because you can do other things, too. It's okay, I suppose, but very mundane; though there can be some interesting things to read from time to time.

Im on Twitter, its pretty good if you want to see what your fave celebs are up to (if they have an account that is) I find it really interesting hearing Chad Kroeger from Nickelback talk randomly and Britney and her team filling us in on what shes up to with her dancers.

Im on there myself, I tend to follow Amber Benson and Juliet Landau mostly, and of course my friends, if anyone is on there feel free to add me: Clare Farmer (Fusions2) on Twitter

There are so many different social sites out there that it does get a bit much about what to post where. That is why I stayed away for so long, I did discover that you can set your twitter updates to also update your Facebook and Livejournal if you have them so it does make things a bit easier.

We also have a BB twitter to keep up to date with all the latest news etc.

I hate Twitter. It's pointless and stupid. However, I do have one because I stalk Christopher Walken which is effing hilarious. I also stalk Taylor Swift, Rainn Wilson, Soleil Moon Frye...etc.

Lol, LOVE your sig! And who'
Evidently, the Walken one got popular enough to be noticed, Twitter have killed it.

Makes me sad, to be honest, whoever was writing it was a genius.
