What is with 'the gay'?

I don't have to do a thing to make you believe I'm a decent guy. All I have to do is be myself. And if you like who I am, you'll accept me. And if you don't, I'll just be a pile of labels with no real attachment to you.

No one said anything about making anyone believe anything.
You have different aspects to your personality, to who you are, its up to you to put them on display.

But that is typically what a label is- when you see one thing and nothing else. What you are saying sounds more like descriptive terms, which can and do fluctuant than a proper label.

The label is made up of these terms and you can add as many labels as you like.

But obviously if you only see that one then that is all I have portrayed to you.

No, not necessarily; It's because that is what I labeled you so that is all I allow myself to see of you. That is why labels are restricting and dangerous, because a label does not give the room for growth. It negates the person and turns them into what, and how you view them, regardless of how the person presents themselves.

Oh! Prime example (of what Al's talking about):

Er.. don't mind the icons, this used to be my desktop.

I feel stupid, i don't like it, this is very complicated. Just so i'm clear, we're talking about these, right?

If i'm wrong about this, please don't label me stupid, or do, or don't, or, um, do what you want.

Oh! Prime example (of what Al's talking about):
Understood, but those are not labels, they are attributes which may or may not fall under the umbrella of a proper label.

edit: for instance, leader is a label; all of the feelings associated with leader fall under and in accordance with the label. Be it strong, wise, insightful, charismatic.. those are all attributes of the label of leader; they are not labels unto themselves. The problem with labeling someone as a leader is that you see only, or put a priority on seeing, the attributes of leader. They cannot have another label at the same time. We naturally see people as archetypes which is why we take comfort in a label.

WHAT?! How are those NOT labels? That's precisely how a 17-year-old girl might label herself! Hence the whole "I Hate Labels" line.

I edited it and elaborated on that.. I knew it would throw you.

Its not the labels that don't allow for growth its the person.
I label people BUT I don't restrict myself. I am aware and openminded that people can be more.

As I said, most people are like this, but some are closed minded and only see one - they are the issue not the label.

But, you can label someone as "Leader" and at the same time as "Drunk". Which, skews your impression. For example, I saw my Student Body president one year (leader), whom I had deep respect for, dance all skanky with a few guys at a StuGo party (skank). This affected the respect I gave her. However, since she was a good friend of mine, it didn't affect her so much that I only saw her as "skank", I saw her as a "leader with skank-like qualities".

Therefore, I meshed to labels together. She now has two labels in my book.

Edit:
Really though, I'm NOW about to go watch "Burn Notice". STOP DISTRACTING ME! 🙂

Okay sk8rj04, and I promise I won't label you as easily distracted.

As far as the first line on the first post stated about the gay thing being deliberated and or mentioned a lot on the forum recently. If it wasn't then, it has been now.

Maybe I just define label differently than everyone else.. everything you just said about the "leader" "skank" etc sound more like titles than labels. But.. that's just me.

atticus,
could you put, ' you observant ', on a T-shirt........best take of the label though.

that is several degrees of wrong.. if the label is removed improperly it can lead it itching and and rare occasion chaffing as a result of fraying; that is why so many companies are going to heat seal labels so rebels like you cannot remove the cleaning instructions.

Oh, Spoons.. without the label for proper care we would live in a state of anarchy; people would be washing colors with whites and washing in hot water instead of cold. I cringe at the thought of a label-less society.

I say, throw all your clothes in the river, let mother nature do the work.

I'm not an anarchist anymore, I'm too tired for the revolution.

If I could just gently steer this back on topic, we should maybe return to the issue of GAY as a label. After all, it is the labelling of a person as belonging to a specific subculture, of making certain lifestyle choices, of being part of a specific group, of exhibiting what would have been seen as deviant behaviour in the not too distant past, that is at issue here. (Geez, spot the sociologist anyone?)

Sexuality is something that is pretty central to your self identity for the vast majority of people, so it's quite important that the effects of labelling in that context are understood. Studies have shown that pigeonholing people into a predefined category that has negative connotations attached to it by a larger subsect of society changes the way people behave (I won't say majority, 'cos that's not my experience, and I am ever hopeful of a tolerant world).

In the case of Becker's labelling theory on deviance (and at the time was developed, homosexuality was still viewed as deviant behaviour), by ascribing a term with a deviant label, individuals moved on from the percieved primary deviant act, and incorporated secondary deviance, (those that went with the 'label') which they would otherwise have not necessarily experienced. Same with weed smokers - once they were 'deviant', they went from being experimenters to regular users, sometimes moving on to other drugs, as they were already labelled as deviant. Kind of 'might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb.' In addition, labelling theory is also concerned with the linguistic tendency of majorities to negatively label minorities or those seen as deviant from norms, in order to maintan their dominance over the other group, and subjugate the other group by essentially giving them a set pattern of behaviour to follow, to keep them DOWN.

So labelling people 'dicks' or 'pompus egotistical asses' may or may not be an accurate description of their behaviour, but it's about facets of their individual personality and not something that is central to their sense of self. Unless it's you two, EB and Sco. I'm supposing both of you like to be seen as a bit on the combatative side. But I'm also supposing there are people who know you are both more than that.

There is no group of 'dicks' (unless you count the French Rugby Team) or 'pompous egotistical asses' (House of Lords, anyone?) - they don't exist as a predefined category with a set of negative behaviours attached. That is about opinion, and is just descriptive. Of course, if EVERYONE you knew used the same words to describe you, year after year, you may find eventually you percieve yourself as others do, so ugly, fat, stupid, or mad will eventually chip away at your self esteem. Labelling someone gay, who may or may not be experimenting, may change their behaviour, because it tells them the role they are to fullfil. Like you said EB, there a a number of youngsters who are on the boards who may just be finding out about themselves. When they say 'yup, I'm gay, so sue me' they are aware of both the negative connotations attached and have the choice to balance that with the sense of cameraderie they gain from being with like people and those who support the LGBT movement.

so, are you saying I can give up the hunt for my dick brethren? there is no official "I'm a dick" club for me to join?
this thread screams for this

Yeah, there's no 'dick' group I can think of. Maybe you could start a whole new subculture!
I´m not getting the thread.
Labels are a human thing, want a proof? A worldwild board and everybody use it.
We are having an AWARD made of labels.. "the cute one, the funny one". We need then... adjectives are labels.. they are natural.. the problem is some people are fragile and can´t stand then. But then this is their problem. I think we need to have respect, even with the labels.. you have to know with who you can´t joke, say stupid thing, or be sincere. You have to know that "you´re a dick" it´s not a compliment, it´s not a "neutral" thing.. it´s a offence or a joke. But "you´re gay" it´s just like "you´re cute" and "you´re insane", just a easy way to say how the person behavior is in that moment without saying too many words xD

Talking about gay things, if Buffy is or isn´t.. what´s wrong? It´s just a subject.. like any other one. But it´s like race problems... if you say that you think black girls are ugly it´s racism, if you say you thing blond girls are ugly, it´s just an opinion... totally unfair. I´m totally gay friendly, I think the world whout be better if everybody were bisexual 😀 But hey, I want to discuss if Faith is or not, anyway.
