What is with the sexual tension between Spike & Buffy?

I mean it seems like they hinted at it a little bit this Season. There was the episode "Something Blue" and the one where Faith was in Buffy's body, but those don't count, since it has to do with magics. Well anyway there was the episode Superstar when Johnathan and Buffy were in the graveyard and Spike then went up to Buffy and began to kind of pet her hair and then her shoulder, until Johnathan stepped in. Now i know this episode had Magic too but Buffy was still Buffy, she still hated Spike and she usually would just push Spike off, or punch him in the face, but she didn't? I always wondered why not?

I think there was some other times as well, like just the way they talked to each other and how they would act, it seemed like something might of been happening, but neither wanted to believe it. I just began to start watching Season 4 again on DVD, been a while since i watched it, so maybe I'm just looking too much into it, and just over exaggerating.
 
I think they probably already wanted to set up the Buffy and Spike tension in this relationship so that we could understand and not think that it was completely nuts that Spike would fall in love with Buffy early on in season five. And the beginnings of my Spuffy-ness (I used to be Bangel, but stopped liking it after I realized how high-schoolish and unreal it was) started after I watched "Something Blue" but "Superstar" had me grinning like a crazy person. 😛
 
The tension between the two characters actually began in "School Hard" in Season 3 and never stopped for the rest of the series, simply because of the chemistry between the two characters and the actors who portrayed them. As Spike put it, they danced well together. Whether as enemies, reluctant co-conspirators, lovers, or close personal friends, they just balanced each other out. That has nothing to do with whether you support Spuffy or not, it's just a simple fact, and their affair/relationship/love, however you label it, could only have been avoided or terminated by the death of one, the other, or both characters. There was just too much fire there for it to have been logically avoided.

(Now all of the Bangels can feel free to jump on me at your leisure and refudiate everything that I said, or at least TRY to)

I think they were building up the relationship beginning. Some people could guess it was coming. I have a cousin who went all "Spike is SO in love with Buffy" all through season 4. So it was building up.

And in Superstar: I think Buffy didn't push Spike away, was because it was Jonathan's episode. Buffy wasn't her usual toughie cos of Jonathan. When ever he was near, Buffy seemed to show more follower than leader features
 
But from what I remember, they were meaning to make Spike fall in love with Buffy from season 3 or 4 (don't remember exactly, I read something about it), not before that. So that does explain the season 4 building, but before that, season 2. I think it was mostly James' acting, he played the attraction even before Joss or whoever thought about it. And he did flirt with her during season 2.

That's because in this universe, Buffy wasn't the Buffy we know. Remember when she eventually does get rough with Spike, and Spike and Jonathan are all confused? Remember when they find a vamp nest, which normally wouldn't be a problem for Buffy to take on, and she decides to go get Jonathan? Remember when Buffy's leading the group meeting without Jonathan there, and the Scoobies are confused and keep asking when he's going to show up? That's all because Buffy wasn't the leader, the brawn, or the brain in this universe. Jonathan was.

But yeah, as for the tension that built up, I agree with everyone else. In the earlier seasons, there was bound to be some natural sexual tension...two attractive/flirtatious actors working in close proximity, plus, as Cordelia so delicately puts it, being in life and death situations is "always all sexy and stuff."
 
Well, the actors always played the tension, which I think was a very good move. From the beginning, Buffy has been a vampire slayer who is attracted to/feels connected to the evil of the vampire variety. And ever since Bram Stoker, vampires have had an underlying sexual attraction to their victims. I agree with everyone else, though, that the writers started using that more in season 4 in order to lead up to a Buffy/Spike connection later on.
 
I think JM said somewhere (I know could I vague that up for ya) that the scene in The Bronze in School Hard wasn't written to be played all sexy but when he saw her dancing it just happened that way, like the scene dictated itself.
 
^ I remember that, too; I think it was in a special features interview in S6 maybe?

I really cannot remember...I've watched so much special features they all run together.
Yeah, this is what he said:
"As an actor, I right away played an attraction to Buffy, even though Spike was fully in love with Drusilla. There was a scene, my very first day of shooting, where I was hunting Buffy, not to fight with her, but just to observe her and see what her fighting style was. And I'm looking at her in the Bronze and I'm kind of walking through the crowd, watching her dance, and there was something both very much of a hunter, "I'm going to kill you", but there's also heavy sexual undercurrent, and that just came off the day (laughs) watching Sarah dance, really. But, you know, Spike was the perfect boyfriend, so he would never go beyond that. But there was that attraction immediately, and by the time we get to Season 4, it's developing. There are two episodes where the characters get together. One is kind of a what-if episode which is brought on by a spell that Willow casts which is completely unreal. But then there's a scene later on in the season where Faith takes over Buffy's body and just messes with Spike's mind. And there we see for the first time that if Spike would have gone for it, he would very much like to have kissed Buffy. And that's why he can't kill her, because he's in love with someone who's truly good. And so he's going to try and be the kind of man that Buffy would like to have. "

Well, theywere probobly just starting to set it up, to make what happens later more believeable. Plus, Spike's A charming, good-looking vampire. 🙂 Who could resist?

Yup i've got all the DVD's from Season 1 to 6, all the story book type ones. I haven't bought S7 yet, but i am debating as if i should buy the cheaper one, with the individual disc cases, or just to buy the story book one, even though it's more expensive it will make it better for a collector's POV.

I haven't seen S7 since it first aired back in 02-03, have a couple eppy's on VHS lol, but that's about it. Would love to buy it on DVD and watch it again.

I bought both. If I understand what you meant. I'd buy the cheaper one if I were you. It has the same content, so why buy the more expensive one?
 
True! I have the Chosen Collection and all individual seasons, though. *happy dance* Speaking of which, go to Best Buy and get season 7! They sell it for only $21.46 and you get the PaleyFest DVD.

Really? Thanks for letting me know! Is this in the U.S only, or in Canada as well. We have Best Buy over here, but not sure if the sales are the same as the US stores.



Oh, and what is a Paleyfest DVD? lol
