I have lots of favourites, classic Michael Jackson albums like Off The Wall and Thriller and then there's some excellent Stevie Wonder ones. But the one I've chosen to review is Black to Black

Wake Up Alone.

My top favourites are Back to Black, Me and Mr Jones and Tears Dry On Their Own, but Wake Up Alone is a special one for me.

Worst song

Ok, there is no bad song on this album but the one song I tend to skip and which is not quite up there with the others is He Can Only Hold Her

Best moment

(This can be one single moment that stands out, or a few.) My top three moments for this record are:

(1) The baseline and horns that play out the song after the final chorus on You Know I'm No Good
(2) The last few notes Amy sings on Me and Mr Jones with a backing that harmonises with her - it is just perfection.
(3) The chorus on Wake Up Alone

Amy's voice on here is immaculate; the power and beauty of her instrument is mind blowing - you can here all her pain in the way she sings and a shining example of this is on Wake Up Alone. The songwriting is incredible, such honest and painful lyrics, like in Love Is A Losing Game, 'and laughed at by the gods' or in Wake Up Alone, 'seizes my guts.' The melodies are amazing and the music infectious. The backing harmonies such as on Me and Mr Jones and Wake Up Alone and the sampling of Ain't No Mountain high Enough on Tears Dry On Their Own are particular favourites! The use of piano with those classic chords in Back To Black is another. A classic, utterly soulful album that gets your heart and soul with every listen.

I don't think I have a "favourite" album. I could name dozens that I adore and always go back to but I think I'll talk about the two most important albums for me. I call these albums the most important because, in their own specific way, they changed or influenced my life.

Best Moment(s)

1. The Public Service Announcement at the top of the album. This sets the tone of the entire album. The first time I put the album on I knew I was about to hear something I'd never heard before.

"Slim Shady is fed up with your shit...and he's going to kill you". Says it all.

2. The Way I Am. Pure anger, disgust and frustration.

3. Bitch Please II, this easily my most listened to song on the album. It's probably not the best song but is certainly the most infectious.

I was eleven when I got this album and it blew music wide open for me. For a finish I ended up buying three copies of it because I played it so much. It completely changed what music would mean to me forever more. Suddenly music was not just something you hear, but something you feel. As a young adult this album expressed all the frustrations and angers I felt in my teens. Without this album I don't know if I would have found Tupac, NWA, Dr. Dre, Easy E, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Nas, Rakim, DMX and the countless other artists that became favourites of mine over the years. To me, this album is my generations Nevermind. It defined us.

I Will Be. This song was written for the album but actually ended up being a B-side of a single. I still count it as the best song though. 😛

Worst Song

Can't Hold Us Down. It's not so much the worst but I enjoy the other songs more.

Best Moments

1. The last quarter of Walk Away. Vocal perfection.

2. I Will Be, this song is basically my mantra in life. And once again, the vocal is ridiculous.

3. Impossible. Written by Alicia Keyes and song to utter perfection by Christina Aguilera.

4. Keep Singing My Song. Anytime I listen to this song I feel all my worries lift off my shoulders. The song is an absolute gift.

I was 14 when this album came out and I've never been the same since. When I was growing up (and even moreso in today's market) the young, female singers are selling a form of empowerment that is actually the importance of having a boyfriend wrapped up in faux-feminist clothing. (Yes, I'm looking at you Beyonce). But with Stripped I had an album that was about the individual. About making yourself. About being strong for yourself. It didn't matter who you were, it especially didn't matter who you were with, the message was that YOU can be and do whatever you want. It was empowering in the truest sense of the word. Ten years later it is still the only album that makes me feel better. Makes me feel like I can do anything.

Gentlemen by The Afghan Whigs​

Like no record before or since, Gentlemen is fraught with the psychological warfare, bedroom drama, Catholic guilt, reprehensible deception and uncleansable shame that coincide with relationships gone seriously wrong.

Just about every song on this CD is "good." The point being, when you listen to it as a whole, each song becomes GREAT. "Gentlemen" and "Debonair" were minor hits, and if you heard those songs and they sounded "o.k.", trust me when I say that after to listening to CD a few times you will appreciate those minor hits 10 fold.

I bought this CD a few years ago after reading the reviews on Amazon.com. I was blown away. I really haven't seen such passionate reviews for any record on Amazon.com. Not even the Beatles have 5 star CD's.

I have now been obsessed with this CD for 4 years. Words can not describe the pain, torment and beauty of this CD. This is not a CD to listen to while drinking beers and playing pool with your buddies. This is a solitary CD, to be listened to while sitting in a chair, with a glass of Scotch, and giving it your full attention. No books or magazines allowed. Just you and your full attention. Only then will you truly understand the genius of this record.

This CD is all about love. A love that lasted a third of Greg Dulli's life. A love that ended. Greg is in horrific pain, and it is obvious. To write songs that simply say "You are a b***h and I hate you" would be way too simple. This is not that type of record. Greg accepts responsibility for his failings. The same failing you and I have.

"Gentlemen" was the first song I heard. It was "ok" a back then, and yet now it is simply brilliant. I can honestly say I "get" that song perfectly when listened to with the rest of the CD. Every song here works... there is no filler. Even the instrumental at end works, like a warm bath after at hard day's work in a coal mine. The instrumental is needed after the emotional devastation caused by this record.

This is not a fun CD to listen to. In fact, Greg had another singer sing one of the songs because it was too painful for him.

My favorite song may by "What Jail is Like," but "Be Sweet" and "My Curse" are also among my favorites. "Favorite" meaning most painful, most like my own life, and most likely to make me cry.

This is the only CD that can make me cry, even after all these years. This is a CD for those who have had their hearts ripped out after the end of a long term relationship.

This is the title song. The CD should be played in order. This is the second song. There is anger. There is substance abuse. Greg cannot deal with the breakup. There are lines in every single song that remind me of my life, my ex, and our 20 year relationship. Here is the line in this song that Greg could have written about me and my ex:

I stayed in too long
But she was the perfect fit
And we dragged it out so long this time
Started to make each other sick

Fright Night, It just doesn't match the pacing with the rest of the album.

Best moment

The intro to Black Acres gives me chills everytime I hear it.

Jennifer Charles has the most seductive voice. I love almost everything she's done, but for me, Queen of the Meadow is really her best. I don't think there is a band out there that can really compare with the style of her's. This album evokes a sense of peace, but also a meloncholy shadow that seems to stem from the haunting rythms. I can't think of a better way to end a hectic day than with this album.

Well, considering all that i own is 50% music, i'll just do the one of the ones i'm listening to a lot recently.

"Flat Top". I imagine that was probably an outtake they kept on the album

The way that lead singer Johnny Rzeznik sings the line "Take another peice of me, give my mind a new disease." in "Long Way Down"

Comments:
Ok, ALOT of people have heard the Goo Goo Dolls thanks to their song "Iris" that was used in the movie City Of Angels. But that was after they'd completly changed their sound. This album was their last true Rock album before they switched to only writing pop songs. All in all, this album is up to pair with albums like Pearl Jam's "Ten" or Nirvana's "In Utero".

Well, the reason this is my all-time favorite is that every song feels better than the last one somehow. And yet when you go back and listen to the first track again you still get that - wow, this song is even better than that last one. It's quite amazing actually...

Best moment

Guess, I'll say the intro on the song Riff Raff. Which is also why I picked it as my favorite song. Those first 1 minute and 40 seconds before the singing starts is pretty much perfection.
And yet the next song feels even stronger as I mention above... 😉

This album has all I really want from a good album, loud guitars, a great rock 'n' roll voice and consistency. When I listen to an album I like a nice flow. Not a mix of different sounds and styles.
I don't need a group of brilliant musicians that can play everything and loves to showcase every little thing. Pick something and do it properly instead, just like AC/DC done.
They aimed to be the best rock 'n' roll band ever and sticked to that, that's brilliance imho.

(3) Oh yeah...more lyrics and wordplay. You'd have to listen to this album 100 times to fully grasp it and you still likely won't unless you can truly understand where it's coming from.

This is Hip-Hop! If your idea of it is that thing your listening to on the radio then you won't like this album especially if your more of a intrumental person over a thinker (not that the production isn't top notch but once again its real hip-hop).

1. The folkloric melody in "Forhekset" and "Du som hater gud"

2. These lyrics from Mother North: "Mother north - how can they sleep while their beds are burning? Mother north - your fields are bleeding"

3. The end lyrics to "Du som hater gud" which is sung in Norweigan and I won't re-write here as few will understand anyway 🙂, and they may seem offensive to some.

The last great hurrah of one of my favorite bands. Yes they've released albums after this but they lost their spirit, they lost the enchanting melodies they used to incorporate to their work and the overall feeling. I suspect the musicians grew out of their somewhat fanatic black-metal origins (as most of us do) yet as it was their carved out niche didn't abandon it but just kind of watered it down for mainstream consumption. Anthems like "Mother north" which has an actual message and is nothing short of eeire and incredibly emotionally powerful - especially live - got changed in for ridiculous tunes like "Black crow on a tombstone" that carries no specific emotional signifigance to themselves or audience. It's just 'cool imagery' (read: sell out for the need of fancy cars, expensive wines and cool apartments).

"Nemesis divina" was in a way my teenage years and will always carry a lot of importance to me as a person. The dark melodies, the anger and disappointment to losses never to be regained and the tie-in somewhat light-hearted melodies resounding old and lost times is magic to me and will probably always cause this to edge towards the top of my favorite albums.

What are your favorite albums? It kinda feels redundant to even say the word "album", considering we're in the digital age, where most people just buy their favorite song of the moment on Itunes. But for those of us who've bought records, and lived records, and breathed records, what are your favorites? The ones that you can turn on, and the world is okay?
