What makes Gunn's character stand out?

And again, why was Charles called by his surname Gunn, in compare to the other characters?

I don't see any real proof that Charles was a better fighter than Riley . . . or if Riley was a better fighter. But Charles was more than just "street smart". He was a very intelligent man. I DO get tired of people referring to him as simply "street smart" and nothing else. Is that how most people from lower-class neighborhoods are regarded?

He was called Gunn probably just because his family used to call him that, and then his friends started to and so on... That happens often, even in real life. Weither it's nicknames, shorter first names ect... 😛 Think of Giles... his first name was Rupert, but only Ethan & Jenny ever called him Rupert more than once.

As for Gunn being a better fighter than Riley, who knows! He did kill a LOT of vampires all by himself in 'Not Fade Away'. I don't think Riley could have done that. But to be honest, characters strength in both shows have always been really variable...

Angel's not to blame for Gunn...Gunn knew the risks of the fight and he always have...even if it was Cordy or Fred they would of had to fight somehow cause thats the game they all played...on Buffy even Xander, Dawn, Anya, Andrew fought and Gunn was even Wes was far more capable then them

Exactly... If Cordy had been there, sorry but even if Angel had wanted to keep her safe, you know she'd have told him to shut his yap and that she was gonna go with him. Since after all, these peeps were together fighting evil for a VERY long time.

IMO he was a better fighter than Riley there is no proof of that I guess. I was just basing it off of the fights in general. Gunn always seemed to hold his own for the most part.

I was saying he was street smart because he didnt have a lavish life. He grew up on the street in a sense fighting Vamps. That made him stand out in the "street smart" department. I do think Gunn was smart. I don't think in season 5 he needed all of the stuff from W & H I think he was capable of using his mind all along.

Gunn wasn't a fav character of mine or anything, but I don't really understand people who actively don't like him. Maybe cos he was underused. Sometimes felt like he was just there, like there was no big story for him or no real growth for his character, as there was for others.

Giles comes from an older generation than the Scoobies. Charles doesn't come from an older generation.

I like the fact he is one of the Buffyverse characters who can still fight demons and does not have any special powers

I thought Gunn was a perfect addition to the verse. He was one of the only citizens to actively wage a war with the vamps and demons. Most of the normal humans of the buffyverse choose to ignore what's going on around them or rationalize what they see. Gunn and his crew were different. Despite the odds they took it to the Vamps every night.

After years of fighting vamps he starts to trust one and fight alongside one himself? Pretty gutsy for a regular human I think.

Well, he did introduce himself as Gunn... so that implies wanting to be known by that name, even if only by habit.
