What makes you different to most Buffy fans? - Possible spoilers

But that isn't exclusive to shipping is it? It might be annoying (I agree) but couldn't the same be said for single characters? You're biased one way or another if you have any feelings for a character. I can only go by what I've experienced on this board since I haven't been elsewhere but during the years I've been here feelings towards characters and not relationships have been an bigger issue.

There's a bias. There are characters people love and hate, but the difference seems to be that people usually have a laundry list of reasons for liking / disliking individual characters, and that's not the issue I'm talking about at all. Never was, never will be. Some of the examples I used before, like disliking Oz because you are a Willow and Tara "shipper", which has nothing to do with who Oz was, is what I mean with the extremes. Disliking Oz because you don't like his actions when he left Willow, or you may have thought he was too reserved and internal with his thinking...well that's not extreme at all.

Of course every fan has preferences. All I have to do is what everyone else is doing which is reading threads and responses often reveal the bias based on that relationship they follow. Sometimes its an issue, sometimes it isn't. The most popular seems to be Spike and Buffy / Buffy and Angel and the bias that exists there can really rear its head and yes I think some people don't see past it, or to use your word - discredit - something based on their ship bias.

You and I and everyone else here knows that's it's not everyone who does it. I'm reading this forum just as you are.

So, if you were to ask me about Spike my opinion would be immediately null and void because I ship Bangel? No matter how valid or how well laid out my argument is, you will disregard it?

The fact that I will have negative things to say about Spike, does that prove your point? Can we apply this to Cordy too? Because I adore Cordy? Does that opinion hold up because it is positive? Is my bias forgotten then?

It seems like you're trying to take this to a very high level here. I'd just be repeating myself to keep responding. SOME people, NOT ALL, SOME have that strong a bias. If you're asking me if you have a particular bias, I don't know - I haven't seen it in anything you specifically have said but it does exist out there.

Remember I'm not talking about "Buffy-Boards.com", I'm talking Buffyverse fandom in user comments on articles, multiple forums, you name it where some people, again to repeat NOT everyone obviously (but still I must keep repeating it) do discredit something based on a shipping preference.

Participating in Buffy-based forums is brand new to me. Observing them and many other Whedon-based sites and articles is very old to me.

This thread asked a question, and I answered it. It was NOT specific to this board. I've said that many times but repeating myself is all I'm doing here. No wonder I'm such a fan of James Horner. (Counts how many get that joke...)

There are issues I think the shows failed shamefully at. I'm sure you can guess at least half of them! 😉 But I would rather be aware of these failings than be blissfully ignorant of them and think it was all rosy.

I stayed and started chatting because it's seems like a friendly (without being gushy) place. The other reason I stayed is I really wanted to talk about the show and it's flaws.

I love the show but then I hate some of it so much.

Well, at times (like right now lol) I feel that the fact that I have a hard time coming up with things that I don't like about the show makes me different.

Everyone seems to have so much they dislike. While I just take it all in with great enjoyment.

Makes me wonder if I shouldn't be more critical though...

I mean, Season 1-3 she's alright, but after that it's all downhill into soapbox!buffy.

Anyway, I hate Bangel, Briley and Spuffy pretty much equally, that'd probably make me a rare specimen. Also, I don't like the finale to either show. And I'm not a big fan of Buffy's character either.

What makes me different?

Although I saw the show when it aired, I only continued watching because of Tillow. No one else.

Most re-runs I do, I'll only go up to Seeing Red, because I always hated season 7 with a passion.

Speaking of Seeing Red, sometimes I'll only watch that episode just to make sure I can still cry, because I'm a really hard, cold hearted ass.

I actually made a discussion group a while back made specifically for Kennedy haters.

I wish the series was called something other than Buffy. I always hated her name.

I hated Spike and Angel both with a passion, although now, I really do prefer Buffy with Spike.

The only reason I'm reading the comics, is because I still have high hopes that Tara will come back to be with Willow.

Most of the time, I hated Xander's inappropriate use of humor at the wrong place/ wrong time.

I am a huge vampire fan. I constantly yell at the tv going "Joss you idiot! That's not what vampires do!"

Vampires make me weak in the knees. 😉

I find the entire series incredibly corny, and consider it to be my guilty pleasure. The writing is just horrible in some episodes.

I hate season 4 and 5 of Angel (yep I said season 5 too!)
I love season 6 of Angel
I like Connor and Dawn

- For me Angel S4 was the best season in the verse.
- I disliked Anya half the time.
- I thought Xander was an awesome dude.
- Angel was terribly boring in BtVS.
- First watch, I wanted Willow and Xander together.
- I think Restless is better than The Gift.
- Smile time, best Angel ep. Band Candy, best BtVS ep. Both comedic stories that weren't really dramatic at all. Just pure fun, which is the main reason I love these shows in the first place.
- I didn't feel much when Tara got shot(sorry Jo, don't kill me).
- I thought Glory was annoying.

I partially agree to this. I did find her quite annoying at first. Like she wanted all the attention brought on her. But I don't entirely blame her. She was a demon and that was just the way she was. But then she grew to like the mortals, like she explains to Andrew in season 7. So that and the fact that she was willing to die fighting for the people she loved made me like her a lot more.

ok I'm sorry...but anyone who doesn't feel anything when Tara got shot is not human. If you disagree with me, I will have you medically tested for lunacy. Also, someone else said they were more torn up when Kendra died rather than when Tara died. All I have to say to that is WTF!!!! I have explained to most why I so strongly disagree with that statement and I don't feel like raging war on the boards right now, even though most would pay to see that happen 😛. In short, Tara was awesome. Period.

I feel the same towards Glory the same way I felt about Anya..a bit. She annoyed me at first but then she just grew on me.

-I prefer "Chosen" over "The Gift"
-I believe Angel loved Cordelia more than Buffy
-S4 of AtS was not that horrible, despite the Connor/Cordelia thing
-S5 of AtS was one of my favorite seasons, although there was no Cordy 🙁

I'm definitely human. And I'm no lunatic. It's not because a death touch someone that it will touch someone else the same way... I was much more shocked by Buff getting shot and Xander who stood there helpless after he just had made up with her...

Tara died instantly. It took me a bit to realize she was gone. But it never impacted me that much. I was much more touched by Willow's rage toward her death.

HATE: Xander. So. Friggen. Much. I try to like him. Every time I do a rewatch I promise I'm going to give this guy a chance, but I just can't stand him. Such a twat.

LOVE: The really bad monster of the weeks from the early seasons. I've always loved bad horror movies, so it makes sense that I would love terrible monsters like in Reptile Boy.

HATE: Okay, not a hate, but I definitely don't get the character of Faith the way other people do. If I was going to write a list of overrated characters EVER, Faith would be on it. Bah.

LOVE: Buffy's cheesy speechifying. I'm sure there are other people out there that love them to, but they would be few and far between.

I think combining those 4 factors makes me a pretty unique Buffy fan. I don't think there's anyone out there that agrees with all four of those thoughts.

I pretty much agree with your entire posts 😀😀 Even the last one lol And the Faith one...I like her, but I don't see what the big deal is with her. she's like in the middle of my love/hate line.

-Season 6 is my favorite and I will defend it 'till the day I die.
-I think the show was infinitely more interesting with Spike there and if he wasn't there in seasons 4-7, I'm not sure I would have LOVED it. I'd love it... but LOVE it... I'm not so sure.
-I hate the plot of season 5, but it contains many of my favorite episodes.
-I hated Oz. I never liked him. He represented the "indie" crowd and pissed me off... sometimes, I found myself really angry by his existence.
-I hated season 3.
-Faith always bothered me. I never really liked her.. not before Bad Girls, not the rest of season 3, not when she came back for her bit in season 4 and Angel, and not in season 7.
-I hate vampire stories. Buffy and Angel are the only vampire stories/shows I can deal with.

Spike's overrated. Having a soul made him boring. Thinking about it almost makes me yawn.

There are other ways in which my opinion differs, but I don't feel I need to mention those. I've probably already alienated a good portion of fandom.

And, to be off-topic, Tim Burton's overrated, too. But, I like The Nightmare Before Christmas.

I must be awful at expressing my thoughts. The reason I asked how often you see things like this is because I don't have anything besides buffyboards to compare with. That's what I tried to say but it obviously it didn't work. It's not easy to get what "some but not everyone" means. But "some" must be more than half if thinking the opposite makes you stand out. Or am I misunderstandng something?

The resemblance is there, obviously. But for me personally (I started the thread after all) not being a vampire or horror fan to take an example isn't exactly unpopular is it? Just a bit uncommon. I don't see buffyprops post to fit in "Unpopular Opinions" either. But maybe that's just me. I guess you can see the word "unpopular" in different ways and maybe mine is a wrong one but it's what I went by. If my lack of english skills caused a problem I apologize.

The point was never to list things you hate about the show, it's opinions that most don't share. Liking Dawn, Connor or Kennedy isn't exactly hateful is it? 😉
