What people would do for money

Throughout the history people have killed for many things. Sometimes to gain something. And I was just thinking to myself how money has become such a big thing for people. So big that people would go as far as killing someone for it. Money worth more than a human life? This sounds so ridiculous. What is money? a device which you can get items for, can get fun, sex, even happiness. Would making money by shooting someone make someone happy? Could it? I mean, great you're rich. But you've also took someone's life.

Is money THAT important? It seems like it these days. Can money get you happiness? Or at least what you want? And why would people do such horrible things for it? It doesn't make any sense!

As somebody once said, money may not be able to buy happiness but it does allow you to be miserable in comfort.

But I think I was fortunate in that when I was about 15 I realised that a lot of your happiness in life depends on what you choose to take pleasure in- if you want to go around accumulating stuff then that's fine, but you'll always be looking for the next thing and storing the stuff you already have. But if you can enjoy sitting down with something to drink and the radio then you're more likely to be happy and for longer.

I think a reasonable amount of money can make one happy, if it allows you to live comfortably. Obviously money isn't worth harming or taking another's life (as there's nothing that justifies that imo), but it's important to be able to reward yourself for working hard in your job or whatever. Being skint isn't the best feeling ever as I can't really go out and do anything, but it does help you be more creative with how you spend what little money you do have.

Personally I don't think I'd enjoy being an executioner even if it paid well or a hit woman or a sniper or whatever but some people would. The reality is that some people are well suited to careers that involve violence. Others aren't. I don't know that I would ever really feel confident in any judgment that I might make about what someone else does to make a living since I can't know their circumstances.

My husband and I have been through some truly horribly times in our marriage. When I say this, I mean we have been so poor that we were evicted from our apartment and forced to send our child to live with relatives because we could not afford to feed her. It was the lowest point in my life, and I learned very quickly that money is not everything. It helps a lot, but as long as you have love and trust, you can get through the toughest of situations.

so sorry you've had to go through that, Britt!
First of all, how much money are we talking about? I think having lots of money and what we'd do with it is something that we all think about but for me, the list of things i would do changes every time. But apart from my immediate family, giving to charity is always high on the list as I imagine, or at least hope, it is for most people.

I love money. Money buys me nice things, like clothes and shoes.

But I would never, and I mean never, do something that's unmoral.. and for sure I would never take someones life.

Money is good in many ways, and it's bad in many ways. It can ruin a person. But if a person is hard enough, money is only going to make them stronger.

It's true that money isn't everything, but I do associate it with freedom to an extent so I probably put more weight on it than if I just considered it a way to get material things. If you have money you can travel to help open your mind and life to new experiences "freeing" yourself from the monotony of everyday life. You can also get out of a bad marriage/family situation or bad job situation more easily if you are financially independent or leave a dangerous environment more easily if you have money.

Money is good because it is the means to make you happy.

For example, let's say that I have a wad of cash. As purely a wad of cash, this is not very happy making. All a wad of cash is good for is fanning yourself if you're hot and making you look important. But if I take this wad of cash and use it to go on a college trip to North Carolina, making a detour to see my amazing girlfriend, then that is good.

Like all things, money is what you put into it, and what you use it for. It can't buy you happiness, but what people overlook is that it can buy you the means to be happy. Because of this, doing horrible things for money is counterproductive as you have a way to make you happier... but you've done something that cancels it out, if not makes it worse.

Best to get money in a pure, honest way than do bad things, or not have any money at all.

Is money THAT important? Well depends on what you mean by that...no it won't buy you love or happiness really, but in this system it is required for means of living. And people who do horrible things for it come from backgrounds usually of emptiness.

Its the American Dream to get rich...and like dreams its normal for people to chase them. Its a dream because its portrayed that way by media, etc. In 3rd world countries people are starving, have no running water, no shoes, etc. so why would anybody doubt they'd do whatever to change their harsh situations...its just natural instinct to survive.

All the pretty famous people that "appear" to be having exciting and great lives are rich. So its natural for a youth from a background of poverty and a broken dysfunctional family likely stemmed somewhere because of money issues (no money=poor housing, health, education, etc.) is going to try to fill that void with wealth. The thing with that is money will fix your problems with the housing, etc. but won't change the fact that your mother was a heroin addict or your father a drunk, or whatever things might be and depending on how you obtained that money might only fix those superficial problems for a short time if not creating other problems like guilt, etc.

Now for the other side of why is the rich kid so greedy and care so much about money. Well I wouldn't know for sure not having that shoe on my foot, but I can guess that living a life filled with your worth being how rich and "successful" you our. You wouldn't want to lose that money and power and will do whatever you can to stay on top in the sense. Anyways I rambled on long enough. 🙂

no, never enough rambling. I like it. :-)
I have a pretty low threshold of what I would do for money...spent some years working office jobs in the corporate world and it took a lot of willpower for me to go to work every day. And it's not even like I was working in a sweat shop or anything...I was just not having fun at work. I was bored. And I'm a person who places happiness above everything. I kind of just want to be happy and enjoy as much as possible every moment of my days. Doing expense reports and collating papers...not so much bringers of joy... I would do silly things like pretend the sound from the copy machine was music and dance to it. But the thing is I have a roof over my head to keep from being rained on and I have food to eat when I'm hungry and I wear clothes to keep me warm....and these things require money and money often requires you to spend a chunk of your time doing stuff you don't really want to do.

I tried to live without it once! I had visions of myself living off the land, eating wild berries and bathing in waterfalls and sleeping in meadows. Didn't really turn out that way.

On the plus side I have been lucky enough to have found a job that I actually really like doing and I get money in return. 🙂

I do have fantasies about going back to the barter system.

I like the way you describe "living off the land" :)
