What to do in California ?

Hey guys!

Sorry I didn't take the time to check if this post exists already.

A friend and I are roadtripping in California for three...
Any of you guys have last minute tips as to what we must do and see? And mustn't ?

All tips welcomed! 😉
 
Well that depends on where you are going in Cali and what kind of stuff you are interested in. There's lots to do here. Some really fun amusement parks, some pretty nature parks too. Some of the beaches are really nice especially when you go more up north. I live by San Francisco and there's a lot of stuff to do there, I really enjoyed Alcatraz Island. You could always tour Hollywood. Or if your down in San Diego that's a great city with lots of fun stuff too.
 
Whale watching was great in San Diego when I went in about 1995.

Be sure to take in the Universal Studios tour and the NBC tour in Hollywood. Everyone should drive Mulholland Drive at some point but watch for snakes - I ran over one that stretched all the way across the road and halfway back and since a lane is eleven feet wide, the snake was 33 feet long and about 5" diameter at its widest point. A great road where no straight section is longer than a quarter mile.

Further up the coast is the city that I believe was the model for Sunnydale - San Luis Obispo. Its population is only slightly larger and it has a University of California branch that is known for its architectural school. There is a spicy aroma to the air due to the ground cover they use and it parallels Sunnydale in that it is on the coast (as in "Grave 6ABB22").

Carmel, Big Sur and Monterey are great places to stop and see the beauty of the place.

Santa Cruz is an interesting place, definitely California but with a bit of redneck thrown in.

Take Highway 17, one of the great twisting, writhing highways that goes 30 miles north to San Jose. On this road, it's not the Porsche 928 blasting along through all the hairpin turns that will get you spooked, it's the panel truck that stays two feet off his back bumper for the whole 30 miles. This gets you to the south end of the San Francisco Bay area where Remington house is a noted attraction as is U of C at Berkeley. You can go through San Jose on the east or Berkeley on the west and all the names you know if you are a computer geek are in the area - Google, Apple and a bunch of other titans of the new economy. San Francisco has a great number of intelligent weirdo's and you can then cross the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito on the north. Going east, you get to Oakland which is like a Mexican version of New Jersey - never beautiful but always threatening in some way.

These are all places I have been to that would appeal to a tourist. I have never been further north, but the wine district is there.

I don't think there are many landmarks from the film which are still readily visible. Not that I was the biggest fan of the movie in the first place! It did have a cracking sound track.

Just the boardwalk. But I suppose that looks like any other board walk right by the coast.

Well we're in La at the moment and are gonna drive to the east to go to joshua tree, drive to the grand canyon and then go to San Francisco.
And then drive back to LA.
But those are the big stops so we want to be sure we see the right things and don't miss out 😉

Oh Joshua Tree is a nice place to go, I used to live not too far from there. Went rock climbing there when I was a kid, a few times. Depends on the route you take up to San Fran I guess. If you take the 5 freeway, there is nothing to see, it's a long boring drive, I hate it. But you could stop off at Yosemite National Park. That's a pretty cool place. Or just north of that is Lake Tahoe, they got some casinos there. Let us know what you decide to do, have a good time!

If you are into art museums The Broad Museum just opened a couple months ago in LA and is pretty neat; it's free too, but you have to go online and reserve your tickets.

Pinks Hot Dogs is a famous hotdog stand that is a neat place to try.

Hiking up by the Griffith Park Observatory is cool, and gives you a good view of the city.

You always have Disneyland, Six Flags and Knotts Berry Farm if you guys want to go to a theme park.

Joshua tree is awesome! It's cold and windy this time of the year so bring a coat!

The 5 freeway is the quickest and easiest way to get to SF, but I honestly think it's worth the extra hour of driving to go up the 101. That way you get to see some coast line (Ventura, Santa Barbara, SLO) and pretty hills rather than flat ugly dry land.

Monterey, Carmel and Santa Cruz are about 2 hours south of SF and are a beautiful stretch of the central coast. Monterey has an awesome aquarium. Carmel is cute and has tons of little breakfasts stops and great coffee shops. Santa Cruz is a little hippy surf town, the boardwalk and down town area are good for people watching. Also, the Mystery Spot is pretty fun to check out.

Good national parks to check out are Yosemite, Kings Canyon National Park, Death Valley (this is east a ways but you may be able to see it when you do the Grand Canyon).

SF is cool, you'll have plenty to do there. Golden Gate Bridge, Fishermans Wharf, Ghiradelli Square are all neat tourist places to see once. Bi-Rite Creamery has awesome ice cream, but there is usually a long line.

There really is tons to do and see. 🙂

But no one said the obvious best thing about going to California,
getting on a plane to eastern America..
