What to look for in Buffy's series?

As you may know, I have the series of BtVS on DVD but have not found myself to be on a high level of fan support for the show.
Starting tonight, I will begin to rewatch the series from epsiode 1:1 and try to see what I missed.

I was just wondering what do I need to look for to truly enjoy the show and be on the level of most of you...
Keep in mind, I have already seen it through once, so none of what happens will stun me, but there has to be a reason this show gets sooooooo much respect and credit. Apparently, I missed it on the first time through.
 
Not everyone is a huge buffy fan some just enjoy it alittle bit... honestly its not something you should spend a huge amount of time watching just to force yourself to like it cause in the end it will just make you hate it. Watch it because you want to watch it.. dont stress to love it just watch it when you feel like watching it... Honestly it took me like 5 episodes to even like the show took me 2 seasons to love it... but everyone is different just cause you like something dont mean you can deal with being crazed over it...

It is an amazing show to most of us here, and we all identify with it differently. If you just don't get what it is about it that makes it great to us...then it just isn't for you. No harm. Try a new series? I dunno....
 
Personally, if i was you, i'd sell the DVD's.
You haven't managed to understand the show on one viewing, infact you seem to look down on it. You haven't taken in what most of the people on this board have said and you continue to mock the show at some level in your posts.
Yeah, I think you should give it up as a bad job, i'm sure there are other shows out there for you to try, but this one, you've tried it, you've failed it and there is no way after an entire viewing of the show will you change your mind.
Maybe you should try Nickleodeon in the afternoons or something!!!
 
Yeah I wouldn't bother to watch it again, if you didn't like it the first time you can't force yourself to love it. Like by asking what you should look out for, that is an impossible question to answer, because every single person connects to the show differently, that's why it is so great.
If I had to point out the most common thing liked by the show:

  • The storylines
  • The continuity
  • The Characters
  • How the characters react to each other
  • The writing
  • The humour
  • The horror
  • The sadness
  • The shows ability to take risks (Hush, The Body, Once More with Feeling)
 
i don't understand why you're forcing yourself to love a show that you obviously don't connect with. asking us to tell you what to look for in the show is like asking us to tell you what we look for in a boy/girl friend...every single person is going to give you a different answer. some people connect with the emotion on the show, some will identify with a particular character, and some will hate that character beyond all reason. some people will love the show for it's incredible writing, or acting or continuity.
some people love certain episodes, and others hate them.
for example, i know that 'The Body' is a ground breaking piece of television, and it was flawless in every single way...but i don't like it! 'The Body' appears very low on my scale of fave episodes...somewhere between 'Phases' and 'I robot...You Jane' but i also know that a lot of people here LOVE that ep...and that's completely fine, because we all like different things and i can't expect others not to like this ep just because i don't.
and that's the same with you. when we tell you what we like about this show, you're obviously going to go and what it again and try to see what we're seeing...but the world doesn't work like that. you have your own opinion and you've obviously made up your mind that you have a very low opinion of BTVS. if you're going to watch the series again, do it for your own reasons, not to try and fit in with us. if you didn't get it the first time round, chances are you're not going to get it this time. like Al said, give it up as a bad job and move on.

on another note, have you watched Angel? maybe you'll find more in that show to connect with. i know there are some people out there who are fans of Angel, but don't like BTVS, and the other way around.
 
If you're looking to hard for the reason we all like it, you're going to miss it.

It can't be forced. It can't be hunted for.

You either get it or you don't No harm done if you don't though. Not everybody does. In fact, a good majority of people don't. Don't be too hard on yourself.
 
Out of curiosity, if you dont like the show, why did you join this forum?

It's funny you know. I actually feel in a similar way to the way CC seems to feel about Buffy with Battlestar Gallactica.

I don't get it. I want to get it, because people I respect do, but I just can't seem to see what they see. I just don't get it. I doubt I ever will.

You know what I wouldn't do though. I wouldn't register on a Battlestar Gallactica board, compare myself to the Pope, and make a lot of inuendo suggesting there's something wrong with the way the BG fans feel about their show. I wouldn't tell them Buffy was better, and suggest they know nothing about that show, so they're choosing to enjoy an inferior show out of ignorance of the superior one. I know a lot of Battlestar Gallactica fans are also Buffy fans.

Yeah, there probably isn't much point in trying to turn people onto something you think is cool...though I try it all the time, lol. I dunno...

I think sometimes you like the idea of a thing rather than the thing itself.

And you feel mad and frustrated, cos you feel a weird combination of: "I should love this! Why don't I love this? Am I a freak?" and "Why isn't this better? Why are all the characters just lame and forgettable? I don't give a sh*t!" lol.

I think it's a longing for inclusion and comaraderie...bumping up against one's personal aesthetic and...like, personal hot-buttons. Whatever themes or character personalities you might respond to naturally.
 
if you dont like it then you dont...

i recommend just watching it with an open mind and allowing yourself to get sucked in...

i supose generally speaking i like it cause its an emotionaly show and i am emotional

It's a tv show. Honestly, what are you expecting? God to leap out the screen and fix all your (many) problems?

Buffy is somewhat overrated. TV sucks. Sometimes there is no immediacy, it's not a 3 minute pop song.

And the truth is, if you don't 'get it', it's because you don't want to(which is clearly the position you approached Buffy from the start).
 
To be honest, the first few times I tried watching "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", I hated it. I thought it sucked. I thought it was silly and totally outrageous. I didn't appreciate the humor. I did eventually become a fan of "Angel" though so I kept watching FX "Buffy" repeats and eventually...something clicked. And I became a fan.

Now I just enjoy the general silliness of it, I see it mostly as a comedy, not a drama. A comedy that deals with serious issues and has drama in it. The characters are likeable (although I find Buffy the least likeable character), the plots can be sometimes ridiculous yet very fun and entertaining, and the way it all comes together makes for excellent entertainment, even though it has its faults.

I love Buffy, but it's not something I can explain. I do know, however, that it's not a show for everyone.
