What type of demon is Buffy?

Whilst walking to work at 6am this morning I thought to myself what type of demon is Buffy.

We know how the first slayer was made to absorb (can't think of a better word) the essence of a demon. Giving her the power.

I'm wondering what demon it was since I don't think it's ever mentioned.

I don't think she is a demon per se. The original slayer was given her power through the essence of a demon but that has been diluted through each slayer through time. Buffy most definetly has a darkness to her but I don't think it is right to call her a demon.

If she was part demon just for being a slayer, wouldn´t Spike had been able to hurt her (while the chip was in his head) before she died the second time? So I guess "essence" really isn´t the sama as "part demon", or maybe it just has disappeared through the years like Keano said.

So I guess the question is more like "From what demon did the first slayer get her powers?"

I'm going to with the obvious here and guess the same demon essence as that which is diluted in the blood of vampires. I mean, she's a vampire slayer first and foremost. Plus, she's got that freaky attraction to them. And, they're always playing the metaphorical role of her dark side (especially Dracula and Spike). You've gotta fight fire with fire, right? Why wouldn't the strength and skill to slay the vampire come from the same source as the vampire? It would even make sense that Buffy is stronger than most vampires -- up until now, there was only one slayer per generation, so the demon essence is less diluted in a slayer than it would be in a vampire.


Oooh: and plus, that thing the shadow men had looked kinda like a heart. And vamps' hearts don't function (and are also their weakest point). Coincidence? I think not. I think the essence of the slayer is the heart of the demon from whose blood vampires were spawned.

I think I worded this wrong, I'm thinking of what the demon essence was because it would be cool to know which kind of demon was used to create the first slayer.

I think palabravampiress answer seems pretty cool.

This would probably be the question I'd ask Joss and the other writers if I had chance.

I have another question. When exactly was the slayer created? When there were still pure demons living on Earth or later, when hybrids (like vamps) started making their way?

Seriously, using plain logic, if the goal of the Slayer was to defeat demons and vampires you would use the strongest thing possible since the essence being transferred would only be a fraction of the original power. Might be interesting if it was the borrowed essence of an Old One from the Deeper Well.

Buffy power was death if I remember her spirit journey correctly, and she focused that power by love...that was her gift so to speak?

Perhaps it's not a demon at all that she taps her mojo from, but from anti demon goodness? God, maybe? At the very least in her circumstance, a heart full of love and obligation and duty were her traits.

As it has been stated from Dr. Strange to Spawn, it's not where your power comes from, but where you send it/use it. 😉

Very compelling question though, and some very enlightened guesses. (feel free to correct me anywhere folks, I love the show but my recent familiarity only extends to season three and my total knowledge goes yet not past season 5.)

"Death is your gift" was misinterpreted by Buffy to mean that she's just a born killer; but what I believe it actually means that peace is her reward, or her gift to the world is her own death. I think that was further proven at the end of "The Gift" when she realizes what she has to do.

As for the first demon used on the girl that became the first slayer, I've always just pictured something big and nasty, that like the whole tribe had to fight to bring down, but who knows. At least we have an idea of how it was done, now, brutal act that it was.

So I don't think that she's part demon, so much as she has inherited traits from the magic the shaman performed. But I don't have a clue as to whether those traits are still rooted in magic, or if they're, say, encoded in her DNA.

And yeah, it would be something else if we found out her power was rooted in an Old One.
