What was going on with Merrick?

Ok,

So everybody knows Donald Sutherland played 'Merrick' the watcher in some film I forget the name of:thumbs_up

However, we are not explained why some strange little man turns up in Becoming to tell Buffy shes a slayer and he is creited as Merrick. As we know it isn't Giles who tells Buffy she is to slay but what happenned to the Merrick?

We hear nothing of him, anyone care to elaborate?
 
I don't understand this either.I don't think they never ever mentioned Merrick other than in Becoming.They never said what happened to him or anything.The best I can come up with is that he died like in the movie and maybe Buffy was too hurt to bring it up ever.
 
I remember the Merrick in Becoming seemed like a little, round, fat man! Heh! He was so cute with that round face!

I always just thought that he died like he did in the movie, and was never mentioned again. I think the TV show was supposed to pick up where the movie left off, didn't someone say that once? And if that's true, then Merrick was dead, and only showed up in Becoming because it was a flashback.
 
The Tv show is a sequel to Joss Whedons original draft of the movie screenplay.

The Movie with Donald Sutherland ( one of Mr. Whedons most favourite of people!) et al are not canon characters in the universe of the TV series.

The original Draft was adapted into the comic 'the beggining' which explains
merrik shoots himself to stop the vamps getting him

in Welcome to the Hellmouth, Buffy already knows what a watcher is and shows prior knolege and experience.

I agree with Faldor. I remember reading in "Origin" (I think) that Merrick did not meet a happy ending.

Thanks for jogging my memory.
 
Its quite funny though...i've lived in areas of England that one would assume 'Jolly good show' would be prevalent, and i've never heard it said....only in American shows trying to either imitate or use for comic purposes....
 
Isn't that funny? Never having lived in the UK, I have no idea what the general 'pop' culture is like. All I have to go by are, like you said, American shows trying to sound British, or the occassional British TV show we get over here (one of my favorites is MI-5 - or Spooks, as it's called there......gawd I love that show!) It can be misleading. I belong to another board for Anglophiles, and some of the people there are British themselves, so we Americans ask them questions all time about what life is like there, the differences between various regions, pop culture, etc. It's very interesting to me. See? I thought people in the UK go around all the time saying, "Jolly good show, mate!" Just walking down the street.......to nobody in particular! I'm kidding, I really didn't think that.....maybe just a little....... :nuts:
 
Well the through TV we all have our images of the different cultures and such....i mean on here im an over exaggerated impression of a Brit too...i often use the Brit slang that i would't dream of using in reality....
But from a UK perspective we have this image that anyone who doesnt live in L.A, New York or Miami are as big as a bus....or all teh ugly girls in school can be prom queen after a pair of specs are exchanged for Contact lenses or they have a simple change of hair style:babe: ...when lets face it....thats only partially true.....
I would love a full frank discussion with a group of 'REAL' americans.....that would be an interesting discussion...

Yes, that would be interesting.
I think,as harsh as it sounds, manners are enforced over here a lot more. I mean, the first words I learned were please and thank you and say them about 3 times when something is done for me, its just born and bred in me. Its also taught in the education system just to make it more poignant in us.

I guess things like that can make us seem pretty posh, plus we all speak standard English while American-English is the same thing but wth a slang in the accent making it sounds more 'common'.

Of course, theres also my Top Hat and Monocle but I'll leave those for another time.

But I have to admit, I'm as sterotypically British as it gets. I've been told I have a very English accent over here as well so its how you view things I guess.
 
Tell me about it...I had a mixture of a strict Austro/German upbringing with a British value system.....fingers whacked at 3 if i didnt use the knife and fork properly......please and thank you a must.....Manners are a huge way of life for many English...its like if we dont we're letting the country down.....even the way we deal with situations....rather then blunder in, we have to act reserved and think of all possiblities first.....

You might be right about manners and basic courtesy being stressed more over there than here. I am appalled sometimes with the behavior of kids I see in restaurants and stores. I have kids, and I've taught them good manners and behavior. They know how to act in public and I've even been complimented on it (even when they were small, like 4 and 5 years old, a time during which most children are running around like little hooligans.)

The show picks up from the movie! As Buffy references herself as she used to be like Cordelia......Merrick is ded in the movie same as the show
 
I think you should go back and read Faldor's post. The movie is roughly equivalent to the back-story, but NOT entirely... it is therefore NOT-canonical!!!

The comic called Origin is! That explains everything you'll want to know 😀
