What was Joyce thinking???

with a name like buffy, maybe joyce and her husband couldn't deside between two names and together (parts) made buffy? or they just txted one of these stupid txt calls to get baby names, etc!

Lol, I was actually named that way - they simply drew my name out of some hat
Am I the only one who now starts to weigh "Lisa/Lizzie/Betty the Vampire Slayer" in their mind and is glad that we got "Buffy" instead?

Just imagine the style of dress befitting "Betty the Vampire Slayer". Would have made Richard Wilkins proud, I guess.

(Funny how names conjure up a stereotypical image, isn't it?)

Oh my gods. Betty the Vampire Slayer. *Gag* I can just imagine the opening credits. She'd have one of those atrocious farmer's daughter bobs, I imagine. And bucked teeth. No offense to any Bettys.

Betty: "And, on this week's show, we'll be learning how to make cookie dough! Isn't that exciting?"

Joss: "No...for the last time....YOU ARE THE COOKIE DOUGH!!!!!"

roflmao!
There were two Buffy's in my class growing up... one was actually Buffie, but it was her given name, and the other was Buffy, but it was short (somehow) for Stephanie.

Buffy makes me think of a poodle... It can't be anything but a name for a dog! Or a fish

Maybe she was thinking -
Joyce: Hmm, I've never seen a man eat so many chicken wings!
Hank: What shall we call the baby that I believe will have some destiny that, will coincidentally take shape when we've gotten a divorce and I stop seeing her.
Joyce: My god, thats ALOT of chicken wings. He's gonna be sick.
Hank: Joyce? Joyce? What name shall I put on record?
Joyce: I could eat a chicken wing! Actually he's quite tasty too - I could eat him. He's quite buff - eh?
Hank: Okily dokily - what do I care I'm doing my receptionist and Dawn won't come along for about 18 years which by then I'll be long gone - Buffy it is.

Joyce Summers
Ha- think you've hit the nail on the head there.
Well, technically, she was Betty the Vampire Slayer briefly during the Freshman episode in season 4. She's telling Xander she doesn't feel like Buffy, and he says something like "now you're Betty?", and she answers "yes, Betty Lou Plotnik from East Cupcake, Illinois", or something to that effect. Later in the episode she returns to being Buffy, but we did have Betty there briefly.

My cousin just called me last night after having watched Freshman to tell me that!
Maybe Joyce was insanely drunk...and decided that she would call her daughter Buffy as a form of punishment....you know for when buffy gets older and what Joyce would have presumed meaner with the effect of teenage hormones...then she can just say, "Nah nah nah nah nah I got to call you BUFFY!!" LOL!!! (Don't ask!)

lol I have never met a Buffy....though it would be interesting.

Joyce Summers said it was common in the 80's....but you know now if someone named their child Buffy there would only be one reason why....

I love all the names in the series. Especially Willow, Anya and Xander. I don't know how long it took me before I realized it was an abbreviation for Alexander. I'm very glad he was not called Alex. Except for Tabula Rasa anyway =P

In middle school, I had a friend named Buffy. This was before the movie/tv show came out. Her official name was Elizabeth. She was also one of the most attractive girls at our school...
