what was kate's role?

Kate was an Adult.
If we think of Buffy seasons 1-3, no matter the age of the characters, there is still that childish quality to them.
The writers of Angel wanted us to know that we were in the Adult world now.
Angel was still Buffy/Angel because it needed time to grow him up believeably, Cordelia well lets be honest here, she was still growing too and Doyle...hmmm, could anyone have been more childish...lol.
Kate, in my opinion, was brought in to show the Human Adult world, as we saw in Buffy, they had the hardest time accepting what they believed unbelievable so it was interesting to watch how she dealt with these strange occurences.
Later when she found out the whole truth, her reaction was believeable and human.
Infact her reaction was the most believable to anyones on either show....i mean lets be frank here, who would just shrug this revelation off?
She kept her stance of good/evil except now she had a whole oter group of beings that were evil.
She couldn't grasp the idea at first that there were good Demons..she even doubted Angel.
She only finally trusted Angel again after her suicide attempt.

No, Kates role was important, just in my mind cut short. Hence the reason in my fanfic i gave her a huge role and have started a spin off(which i swear i fully intend to finish when i have time🙂 )

It was a huge disappointment that Kate was written out of the show but when the Law & Order juggernaut rings the bell actors turn into Pavlov's dog and come running! Saddest part was she only did L&O for what about 2 seasons?
I am just glad that there was enough time to write her out of the show with a great story arc and that Joss decided not to replace her character with another actor.
 
yeah she was there for a long time, and only left to do films. it's been rumored if the new girl doesn't make it Elisabeth will come back
 
well i liked the idea of her clashing with Angel and both worlds colliding. made it much more interesting then the usual sunnydale setting.
 
I agree she added the adult element which was needed right at the start of the show to claim the difference between angel and btvs.
Kate gave some balance as the other characters were either demon (doyle) vampire (angel) or sunnydale cast offs (cordy) all characters that believed and took it all as everyday stuff.
Kate helped angel to realise that he had to continue to fight the good fight and that friendships had to be worked on. Humans needed Angel.
 
The thing I appreciated most about the Kate character, in the context of the Angel series, was she demonstrated that not every 'named' character has a 'character shield'. Most of the time, even to a pretty stable degree in the Whedonverse, you can sorta identify the characters that even when placed in dire situations, are likely to live, and essentially come out intact.

The Kate character, was one that didn't She tried to do good, tried to support Angel, and it completely came back to bite her in the ass. Sure the badguys had Wolfram and Hart to bash on her, but seeing her get so completely crushed in that Police Review Board was rather impressive. I rather liked the hanging unresolved issue of the character, she tries to commit suicide, gets saved by Angel, imparts a "I never invited you in" epiphany to Angel, then effectively disappears from his life. Seems fitting in an odd way.
 
I thought at first that Kate would be written as Angel's combination love interest and contact in the LAPD (traditonaly, all good P I's, from Sam Slade to Mike Hammer, Spencer, and all the others have had their budy on the force who supplies them with information vital to their cases), but she ultimately was neither. Kate became a sort of Kolchak character, knowing that the world of the supernatural exists, and trying in some way to deal with it. I liked the character, and always thought that she wasn't utilised to her full potential.
 
Originally the Kate character was written much darker than she appears. She was going to be a drug addicted cop who sometimes prostituted herself for money and companionship. The tv network didn't like it so she was toned down to what we see. I liked the character, i think some fans got worried that because she was blonde and pretty she *might* be intended as a love interest for Angel and they didn't like the danger that he might get distracted from brooding over Buffy. I agree that she was supposed to emphisise the adult nature of the show - I mean how many times in the first half of season one did someone say "This isn't high school anymore' or something similar!
 
KAte wasn't jus a lump a bump on a long, she was there for more. Her role in Angel was amazing. She was more than "Sexual tension" as well. She helped out in plenty of cases and was down to fight when the vamps and the super natural beasties came out. I wish Kate could of stayed on longer cause she was bueatiful and I grew atached to her. 🙁 But yea, she was a big part of the show in a little way.....

That explains it, I did guess that Kate would've had a much bigger role in future seasons. I think what I like about Whedon's writing is it's so unpredictable, as he seems to develop storylines around what's going on in the world around him.
 
I always liked Kate, most of my friends hated her though, but it was nice to have a "real" character in that world.
