What Was The First Film You Remember Seeing At The Cinema?

Talking about kids films got me remembering going to the cinema when I was wee. The first film I remember going to see was The Little Mermaid when I was only 4 years old. I loved it then and I love it now!

I'm told it was Aladdin, but I don't remember actually watching the film. I do, however have a strange floaty memory of being outside the cinema about to go in. The thing is, it's just like a blur of colour and shape, and I can't pinpoint any details, but as soon as I read your post it came flashing back. Now there's a whole flood of childhood memories from the same period, and I'm feeling all nostalgic, so I'm going to give you some karma! Thank you for this topic!

I remember going to see Snow White when it was re-released...either that, or my local cinema was just having a vintage day or something. My mom took me and my best friend, and we spent the entire movie watching it from peeking above the seats in front of us and hiding when the mean old witch came on screen. We were 4 or 5 and we were scared, lol.

I'm pretty sure it was The Jungle Book, with my grandma when I was 6 or 7.

My dad has told me that my first theater movie was ET. I was 2, so I don't remember it AT ALL. The first thing I actually remember seeing in the theater (though I'm sure there were other movies between these two) is Aladdin. I would have been 11 or 12 then.

re-release of Bambi when i was 4 and i BAWLED my eyes out.
But I remember loving seeing a movie that I liked on the 'big screen' 'cause before then i'd only been sat in movies my mum wanted to see

Apparently it was Back to the Future. I was four years old and loved it. Apparently. I mean I don't doubt that fact considering I have the trilogy boxset in my possession now, haha, but I don't remember loving it the first time round. I do remember that same year for my friend Jenny's fourth birthday party going to see The Goonies. And crying because someone ate all the lemon jelly diamond sweets before I had one.

i have this memory of me seeing the little mermaid, all i remember is the ursual giant bit at the end in my memory, but it cant have been since i was born in 1987...

and i also remember going with my mum in fenwicks and buying it on vhs....

other than that, i kinda went to the cinema every week or more growing up so i cant pin point.... ill often be in a dvd store and find a dvd of a film i cant remember seeing since i saw it at the cinema when i was ickle. I have so many memories of cinema goings growing up, its what makes me feel like a kid again the most is the memories of the cinema that closed down here that had the BEST toffee popcorn and only 4 screens.... gods i miss the old odeon.



And i remember seeing Aladdin with my grandad at the odeon in screen 2, sat at the end of the row about halfway down... loved the film ever since and i remember my grandad actually staying awake through it (he falls asleep in most films) and loving when the genie did the jack nicholson impression.

Earliest one I remember seeing at a theater was "Jailhouse Rock", during its first release (but, since it took a while for new-release movies to hit our theater, it was probably around a year old at the time...)

The first movie that I can actually remember the name of (my mother was taking me to movies almost from the day that I was born) was "Son of Paleface" that starred Bob Hope and Jane Russell, but the reason that I remember it so well was that it starred my very own personal hero, Roy Rogers and his wonder horse, Trigger, and it was IN COLOR! (yes, kiddies, I'm really that old) I can even still remember Roy singing "My Wonderful Four Legged Friend."

I was seven when I saw my first flicks. My older stepbrother took me to an unusual double-bill at a run-down South Bronx theater called the Kent (which is now a discount clothing store, but I digress.....)

Anyhoo, the double feature was unusual in that the genres didn't fit together at ALL, as one was a kiddie family picture, and the other was a foreign Action/Horror movie.

The family flick was "Benji" (1974) , about some lovable stray neighborhood mutt who helps recover two kidnapped children.

The Action/Horror flick was some cheeserific Mexican deal called "Santo y Blue Demon contra Dracula y el Hombre Lobo" (1973), (translated: Santo and the Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolf Man) about two masked wrestlers moonlighting as superheroes/secret agents, who take on a vampire and a werewolf bent on destroying the world.

Disney's Song of the South re-release in Pittsburgh - way, way back when.
My family didn't go to the theater much at all - it was for really special occasions.
My next film was The Exorcist - first run back in '73 (Grauman's Chinese Theater). I think I was around 8 or 9 then.
Then I had the privilege of seeing Star Wars first run in '77 (also in Pittsburgh) - we were back visiting relatives at the time.

An eclectic experience.

Think I was 7 or 8 when I was taken to see a re-run of Fantasia. And I can still see those dancing Hippo's in their tu-tu's.

I´m sure I don´t remember the actual first one, and I´m not sure anyone does. But two of the earliest are based on books by Astrid Lindgren, Pippi på de sju haven and Ronja Rövardotter.

The last one I saw at the local cinema (in my hometown) was this great flick called The Cat from Outer Space. What a great choice of a movie that was. 😉


Naming those movies makes me sound older than I really am. Ronja I saw then it was realesed but the other ones way later. Ok, maybe not "way" later, but it was in the 80´s.

I can't remember how old I was but the first film I saw at the cinema was Toy Story.

Hmm...I had to think about this one. We didn't have an actual cinema in my corner of rural South Warwickshire but the local Working Men's Club used to have film shows in their function room every week. My Dad was a member, so I got to go. The first film I remember seeing at these weekly treats was either Goldfinger or The Jungle Book but it's such a long time ago it's hard to remember precisely...

I really have a hard time remembering things cause honestly the first thing i really remember seeing was one of the Halloween Movies at the drive in with my mom and my grandpa.

Mine was The Little Mermaid. I think we went and saw it probably at least 5 times. I was probably about 3, but still remember going with my mom...we had to buy the movie when it first came out and I still have it and watch it sometimes. I love the Little Mermaid!
