What was the first book/film/show that got you into Vampire stories? Was it Buffy or something else?

For me it was the movie The Lost Boys. I adored this movie and become very interested in vampires after seeing this movie. The music is awesome by the way.

Lost Boys karma! LOVE that movie :)
I don't really like vampire stories. Obviously I love the Buffyverse, but generally I don't enjoy them much. The first thing I remember enjoying with vampires in was The Lost Boys. The Soundtrack was the first CD I ever bought 🙂

Now that you mention it, Nix, it was the lost boys! I loved that movie....and very quickly after that I saw the buffy movie and got totally hooked - but in a whole different way. It was HER that intrigued me. I think there's a passion and seduction about the idea of vampires that I'm kinda a sucker for (pardon the pun) hahaha but buffy - she takes it to a whole other level!

Buffy. I started loving vampires with Buffy and discovered the other vampiric universes afterward. Now, I love most of the vampire stories I come accross, with the exception of a few teenage book series that are playing a bit too much with the concept.

For me, it was a combination of The Lost Boys and BTVS. I wasn't drawn to either because of the vampire element, but ended up enjoying it enough that I did read a few vampire stories after. While I do enjoy vampire stories, I'm not so drawn to them that just any book, tv or movie would catch my attention just because it had a vampire element in it. I like to think of myself as a selective vampire fan. 😉

My first vampire movie starred the daddy of all Draculas, the incomparable Bela Lugosi.

He could do more with that one line than all of the other actors wilt all of their makeup and prosthetic fangs combined.

Mine was BtVS. I don't really explore other vampire stories besides what is in the Buffyverse.

I'm gonna be honest... this guy was a part of it 🙂

But mainly it was reading Bram Stoker's Dracula. I loved it, still do, and wanted more on the subject. So I started reading Anne Rice (with its much more favorable portrayal of vampires...) and was hooked. Soon after that I saw the Buffy movie... then came the show 🙂

How do you guys remember these things?

I've tried to recall what it could've been but I just can't remember. 🙁

I actually hate vampires. The whole thing annoys me because it doesn't make sense. They can speak, but they don't breathe. They can have sex but their blood doesn't pump. They can think but they don't breathe and their blood doesn't pump. None of it makes any sense at all... so I was reluctant to even watch Buffy. But I did. And Buffy is actually the only vampire story I actually like.

I think one of my first vampire films I watched with obsession was Underworld and Blade. Then BTVS. But I read books about vampires before the films!

I'm not interested in vampires, to be honest. The only vamp stuff I watch are Buffy and Angel. There's also an anime called Blood+, and the antagonists are these beast-things called Chiropterans that are kind of like vampires, in that they have to drink blood to survive, and a sub-species of them (called the Schiff) die when exposed to sunlight. But no, not really into vamps.

Unfortunately it was Twilight. 🙁 Then I went onto read the nightworld series. Now I just read way too many vampire stories. 😛

But Twilight is by far the worst of them.

I don't think that L.J Smith is a good writer, but for some reason her books are addicting :S

Me either.

I can't remember exactly what got me into vampires, but I feel like I've always been into it and just horror/supernatural type stuff in general.

I guess maybe it might have been my mum's influence. She is a big horror fan, so I grew up watching those kinds of movies and reading those kinds of novels. I think the first vampire book I read was Salem's Lot by Stephen King 🙂

I love The Lost Boys, and Near Dark and movies like that. True Blood is the only other vampire tv show that I'm really into besides Buffy, although I do enjoy TVD aswell 🙂

But its not really about the vampires for me, its about a good story.

I know, right? All the TVD stuff about Elena dying and coming back again and dying again....and coming back... It makes no sense even in a vamp book and yet I own them all XD (up until the Hunters trilogy, because it's not her writing anymore).

Near Dark is an old favourite of mine, love that movie.

But you're right. Perhaps a reason I can't remember any specific movie/book that got me into vampires is that I'm not really into vampires per se.
I do think though that vampire stories often have a nice mythology that I usually appreciate. But it's not like I think a story becomes good automatically just because it's about vampires.
