What was your reaction to Dawn?

For anyone who watched season 5 when it was premired in 2000, what was your reaction to when Dawn was introduced to the show? And did you like waiting weeks before you found out what the hell she was doing there?

I so didn't liked her. I hated her. I thought she was one of the most annoying characters on tv ever. She was annoying, and Buffy so didn't liked her, so I didn't liked her. She was such a drama queen, even before she found out that she's a ball of energy. I never liked they put her in the show, but in the season 7 she became someone who didn't annoy me but never interested me either.
 
I was so glad. I mean I knew that Buffy has a sister before I watched season 1. So I was counting the episodes that I would eventually see her. 😀 And when they say "Mom!" in unison, I wanted to hug my TV.
 
I didn't see it straight when it came out so I didn't have to wait a week for next episode. I was very surprised and wondered what I'd missed until things became clearer. I thought Dawn was cute but annoying. And I totally understood Buffy's feelings for her. But now I like her.
 
Jaw dropped. Hit the floor. Speechless. Loved the show all the more for that cliffhanger. Also, so many shows could have jumped the shark with similar insert-new-character-here gimmicks, but she was an integral part of the season arc and explained so well. Don't hate her at all. Annoying? sure. that's what younger sibs can do 😉 I think that was kind of the point, outside of the "key" arc...that Buffy had to be responsible for someone in her life she didn't have a choice about.
 
I had heard she was coming, so I wasn't shocked but I was REALLY confused as to how she had just supposedly been there forever. I remember going "WTF? Ok, Joss, I'll play... How is she gonna fit into the show?"
 
I think I read spoilers about several seasons before I saw them, but when I read I think I thought

"WTF. Okay... Okay... That's... lame? We'll see where it goes."

Then I thought

"Oh. My. God. She reminds me of how my lis sis used to be. So annoying I want to kill her."

Then I slowly started to like her. It was hard not to feel sorry for her, and she became less annoying, and after a while, she became someone I could admire.

So I never had to wait weeks to find up what was going on, but I imagine I would have felt the same. I don't think I would have assumed that Buffy was the kind of show ehere you could just add siblings without their being a reasonable explanation (example of a bad explanation "She had lived with their dad for 4 years").
 
I remember reading news reports saying that Michelle Trachtenberg was joining the cast and, being in Australia and a little bit behind the US, we invariably heard that she was going to be Buffy's sister, so I knew that it was coming...but, I was expecting her to be like a half-sister and for her to have some non-mystical reason for coming into the show. When Dawn and Buffy turned around and said 'Mum' and it didn't get explained for weeks, and giles and the scoobies seemed to know who she was, well, it was all very confusing. Dawn was pretty darn creepy at first.
 
I watched the whole series recently for the first time, but I didn't know much of anything about the show in advance. When Dawn appeared I thought, "WTF!?" That was basically my reaction. I had noticed the show had some issues with continuity at times and I had overlooked them pretty easily but I thought that was a pretty major mess up if they were just going to toss in a younger sister all of a sudden. I figured it must be part of the story but I couldn't imagine how!
 
I didn't like Dawn at first at all, I mostly thought she was annoying at that it was irritating how all of a sudden she was supposed to have always been there. I thought that was a hard sell.
But I grew to tolerate her and eventually kind of like her.

I do like the dynamic between her and Buffy though. in season 5 she is so much like a typical sibling - even if the world thinks Buffy is awesome, Dawn just sees her as her annoying big sis. which is kind of nice to level out the greatness of the Buff and her superhero persona.

i totally agree 🙂 and i have to say their sister relationship was pretty damn realistic. joss got it right with that one
 
first reaction: "WTF?!"
and then... : "get this kid out of my screen"
after that: "I thought she would be dead by now"

I just started to like her when she and Spike was always together.
 
I remember when I first saw that last scene of Buffy vs. Dracula, I thought I'd somehow missed a whole season. I was pretty confused. But once we'd got into a few eps I thought Buffy and Dawn had really good chemistry, it really felt like she'd been on the show for ages.
 
Never had any problems with Dawn.

When she first appeared I also went WTF, what did just happend?

But already in the next episode you got hints that something weird was going on.
Was mostly curious after that, who was she really?

The funny thing is that I started watching Buffy at season 5, so I wasn't suprised. When I saw season 1 after that, I was like, where's Dawn?
