What were the spiders of Gavrock made of?

Has anyone heard any interviews or been to any conventions where joss or another cast member commented on the spiders of Gavrock scene in graduation day part 1? I'd love to know what they were actually made of in real life. To this day it is the only scene from the series that grosses me out, and I'm not squimish at all! I think it is the sound of those high protein, extra crunchy exoskeletons grinding between the mayor's blackened teeth that get me every time. Yum?

Thanks. 🙂

Welcome to the BB. :: tu ::

If I'm remembering correctly from the old DVD extras, they were made of stretched out Tootsie Rolls, or at least the spider legs were.

Haha, figures! The grossest candy known to humanity makes great spiders. Thanks for the information and the welcome! You've no idea how long I've been trying to figure that out.

Hey! Tootsie Rolls are delicious... sadly with braces, they're off-limits for me for a couple more years... Looking at the vid though of the Mayor eating them, I would say that they somehow dyed the tootsie rolls, cuz they looked rather black than brown.

Ick, definitely not my thing. I think it is the texture, too waxy. I welcomed braces for just this reason. But I agree, they did look a lot darker than your average tootsie roll, and I've not seen a tootsie roll turn someone's teeth that black, ever. Maybe they used some kind of stomach friendly dye to make the legs look more spidery. Then again, I'm clearly not a tootsie roll expert, so maybe they do actually make your tongue/mouth turn colors.
