I got the idea for this thread from the 'What did you expect to like?' thread. Is there anything you can think of that you expected to hate but were pleasantly surprised by and wound up liking? Could be a television show, a movie, a book, music, ect.

Water For Elephants. Never seen the movie, but I saw the book in a bookstore and bought it on a whim. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. 😀

The movie 'Warrior' starring Tom Hardy. On paper it seems unoriginal and when you're watching it, it certainly has its fair share of cliches, but in spite of that, you still care about the characters and what they go through. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Was the last book depressing? I never read it because I had a feeling it was going to be :unsure:
I found it more disappointing than depressing. But other people I got to read it, absolutely loved the ending. It's certainly worth finishing.

The Vampire Diaries tv show. I had utterly refused to watch any Vampire related tv show, as I was certain they would all be rip offs from Buffy but my sister in law kept going on and on and on about it, so I had to sit down and watch it to get her to stop!! and I became hooked 🙄 lol

Bones. I watched a few episodes and wasn't impressed, but after my sister insisting that I give the show a shot I watched s1-3 consecutively and fell in love with it. Now I'm eagerly waiting for its return.
Supernatural. Never interested me, but recently started watching it and have been really surprised how much I've been enjoying it.
The Hunger Games. Ok I'll admit it, I have a soft spot for cheesy YA novels and I figured this trilogy would be more enjoyable fluff so I picked them up at the library and was so pleased to find out they were SO much better that I expected.
Comic books. I never though I'd enjoy comics but since reading BTVS S8 and 9 I've branched out to other series and have found that I really enjoy the medium.

Twilight. I went in with low expectations and was pleasntly suprised about some things. For example, the sparkle thing was not that silly. However, among other things, the Bella character disapointed me. But over all, I liked it, which was suprising.

The Shawshank Redemption. I didn't know anything about it, and the first time I saw it on t.v. I turned it off right as it began because it seemed boring. Ha. I decided to watch it another time for some reason...and it's one of my favorite movies. I also expected to hate/not even finish reading The Catcher in the Rye. When I was younger I was kind of sexist hahah I preferred to play video games with female characters, and I felt the same way when it came to movies/books. I wanted the main characters to be girls.
Ironically, it was the first time I felt like I could relate to a fictional character. My mom threw the book in my room while I was complaining about how bored I was when I was about 10 or 11. Thanks mom 😀.

Supernatural. The first time I watched it, it was a vampire episode (S1) and I didn't like how they pictured them (I was still a BTVS real hardcore fan at the time and I was only 12, so anything else than the Whedonverse vampires was disappointing to me). But the girls on the Vampire Diaries forum kept going about how good it was and how addictive and how I should totally watch it. So I gave it another try in December. Watched S1 to S7 in 3 weeks and I'm so hooked I can barely talk about something else!!! XD

Lost Girl. I thought it was going to be one of those Buffy/Angel rip off shows. But after 10 minutes of the first episode, I loved it so damn much! And one of the reasons is BECAUSE it's so similar to Buffy/Angel.

This book is completely different from my usual read, however I read it almost by accident and it is now one of my top five, without a doubt. Although, the author is responsible for some horrendous fiction!

Breaking Bad: I wasn't expecting much out of this show, and to be honest I thought it would be some kind of comedy, with Bryan Cranston being in the lead role. I wasn't taking him too seriously, considering I'd always picture him as Hal, Malcolm's father in "Malcolm In The Middle", but I went out on a limb and bought the first season. And wooooooooow did it completely blow any expectations out of the water! God, how can a show be so beautiful?? It's not my favorite show of all time (that of course is Buffy), but is it possibly the greatest? Abso-damn-lutely. Everything about it is pitch perfect, and that's rare to say about any show, even Buffy.
Dollhouse: I heard people talk so much shit about this show; that's it's not Joss' best, that it tries too hard, that Eliza is a sucky actress, blah, blah, blah. So I had already had the worst expectations for this show. But, being the life long Whedon devotee I am, I had to at least try it. I should've had more faith in Joss. This series, when it picks up steam, is incredibly brilliant. Some of my favorite episodes come from this series. It raises some serious questions, gives us these incredible "what if" scenarios, and it had the most potential out of any series that Joss did. Too bad it got cut short, so we may never know what might have become of this criminally underrated series.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show: I stopped listening to what other people had to say a long time ago. Back then, I had gave in to the hype and written this movie off as this "stupid, weird crapfest". Well, one day, my friend (who is a big RHPS fan) started watching it at her house. I was in her kitchen, raiding her fridge when "Sweet Transvestite" started playing. It sounded so funny and interesting that I ran into the living room to see what was going on. Beside the brilliant song, what hooked me was the fact that one of my favorite actresses, Susan Sarandon, was in it as well. It didn't take long for me to get sucked in, and now it's one of my all time favorite movies.
