Well, it's already happened in the Buffy&Angel comics. So spoilers for those below.
Not too spoiler too much, but the military isn't that happy with a army of slayers with superpowers running around the world. The public is actually very pro-vampires, and think slayers are nazis, hunting down "innocent" vampires who atre just trying to survive, not harming anyone. So the public is still in denial, even though they actually know of vampires. They're actually very pro vampires and think they're all cuddly. I think that's partly because since WW2 and slavery are still two big issues, no one wants to persecute vampires just because they're "allegedly" bad, into the mythology. Instead, they choose to hate slayers, who have been somewhat proven to be murderers. One slayer tried to kill Harmony who is a very popular celebrity in the comics, and the fans who watched it happen thought it was a evil act, completely uncalled for.
Then slayers became hunted, since Harmony said they were all evil, hunting down poor vampires. I think I even recall Harmony saying she killed people, but people are so in love with vampires (the vamp craze seemed to be the same as in the real world, minus the real vampires) that they gladly go on a witchhunt for slayers without having much facts at all. Of course, there was that rogue slayer in Rome. Other than it, it pretty much seems to be Harmony that started the slayer hate. And when other vampires "outed" themselves, they probably told the same tale. Nevermind all the corpses with neck wounds reported for hundred of years and stories of people with deformed faces attacking people.
I guess it makes sense, in a way, that people want to be open minded and not judge, don't want to be prejudiced like in the past, but since we're a pretty ignorant and stupid specie from time to time, we still need someone to hate. In the comics those are the slayers.
I would really have wished slayers had never been outed. Or vampires. But I guess it's a pretty old storyline that's worked in the past; The good guy is painted like a villain and the public hates him/her/them. The good guy has try to fight the good fight while staying away from police and the public, trying to clear their name.
Hopefully season 9 will deal with the clearing name bit.

You should. Some parts are... let's say "meh" and some parts of brilliant. The TPBs can't cost that much now. Or just try the free online ones. Specially the Spangel-dream one called Always darkest. That one made me happy. 🙂
