Hi y'all! I am interested in some advice, especially from mothers.

I have a very close old friend who just had her first baby. After five years, multiple rounds of IVF and a miscarriage, she finally has her baby girl. ❤️

I'm child free by choice, and most of my friends are too, so I do not have a lot of experience with getting gifts for new mothers. I want to gift her something thoughtful and different that she will actually appreciate and use. I know the baby is already getting lots of gifts, so I'm not worried about that (I am giving her baby a book though).
She is very intelligent and creative person who loves cats if this helps.

What should I get her?

Sneak into the maternity ward and steal a bunch of mesh underpants to give her. Never met a woman who didn’t speak of them as if it was God’s gift!

More seriously, these ”sleep animals” are big here. I’ve been asked to make several for new moms

But for mom more immediately, gift certificates to food services. If she breastfeeds she’ll be hungry but tired, help a girl get some fast food deliveries 😄 Dress it up in a nice card and help keeping her fed!

(Mom brain does funny things to both creativity and intelligence for a while, in my experience, hence the practical focus 😅)

Absolutely anything that helps relaxation.

Well, perhaps not illegal drugs...

Massagers maybe? Every time I've given gifts it's been for the baby, either before or after birth.

Personally I do whatever I can for my daughter, she has a child through IVF and is going through the rounds of IVF again, a genetic disorder that had been passed down through her mothers family helped her choose IVF to end the genetic disorder. Her husband does whatever he can and I help out and support her at every opportunity. A nice potted plant works wonders.

All of the above but she's probably appreciate a rest so she can have a bath in peace. Some housework to be done, anything requiring heavy lifting. To have a shopping delivery taken in and put away for her and a hot meal!! All things you take for granted but really help out a new mum.

I wish I could, but she lives in another state! Or I would bring her some homemade food.
I'm guessing she has all the practical things she needs - so I'd echo a couple of the responses here for a massage/spa session.

But if I may - I made a personalised gift for a friend who had a baby. I didn't yet know the name of bub, but it was a piece of art to hang up in the nursery. Now you know the baby's name, you could make/get something personalised (like a baby blanket with her name on it).

GIFT CARDS! My aunt got us a $150 grubhub gift card and some amazon ones and those were so helpful honestly, because there were times my husband was too tired to cook, and he wasn't letting me do anything but rest and recover, and the amazon ones meant I could get whatever I wanted.

A self care basket for mom - lotion, nice comfy socks, stuff like that. Book her a massage, or mani/pedi, or a house cleaner session if you can - new parents are tired and a little help is always welcome.

Offer to babysit!
Not a new born. If you are family level close, offer to come and cook and do laundry, go to the store etc., esp if the partner is busy or absent.

Yeah, was more joking with that than serious. Down the line it is more useful, but not this soon, and you want someone who has experience with kids, even if not their own.

I would but she lives in a different state.
As a mom, after I had my babies I would have LOVED:
  • A gift certificate for a massage, facial, or a mani/pedi
  • Someone to offer to babysit so I could nap
  • A nice set of bath soaks or something to pamper myself with
  • A nice meal brought or sent to the house so I could have a break from cooking
Basically, anything that would allow her to pamper herself or give her a break from mom duties for a little bit is a wonderful gift. The baby gets tons of stuff after it's born but moms don't always get much. Show your friend you want her to take time for herself, too. ♥
