I have three best girl friends: Stephanie, Daria and Lauren. Lauren is currently dating a guy named Juan. They've been dating for more than half a year. He comes from a broken home where his father mentally abuses him by calling him names and making him feel bad. Now, Juan is beginning to show the same form of disrespect to Lauren. He plays cruel jokes and says extremely rude things to her that makes her feel upset. How would you feel if the person you loved told you, "I hope you get raped and die." Lauren is always pissed off or angry because obviously it hurts her to have someone she loves tell her that. He puts hours upon hours into plans to make her cry, and she does cry. From what I've seen while they're together, it seems like he's very controling of her and it always seems like he's hurting her in some way. He just passes it off as play fighting and so does she so I don't know how to think about that.

Today, he started bad mouthing her to her face and she was really upset about it. My friend Sarah and I started talking to her about it. We said things like "someone who loves you wouldn't take joy in seeing you upset." She doesn't seem to want to accept that he's not a good guy and that she's wasted half a year with a guy who likes to make her upset. She says that, since his father abused him, it was passed on to him and he's doing it to her. We had a confrentation in the locker room where he accused me of trying to break them up. I said that "I only tell her what I see and all I see is a worthless pile of **** who likes to see her upset." We started fighting verbally and I ended with "the thing is, no one gives a crap about you, but we do care about her."

Lauren thinks it's ok for him to treat her like she does. He's her first real boyfriend so I don't know if she really knows how a relationship works; although anyone with a brain would know that someone who takes pleasure in seeing you upset doesn't love you! She thinks it's ok and that it's not his fault that he is the way he is.

I feel that it's not right to treat her the way he does. Any real man, like me, would know that you have to treat a lady with respect and apologize honestly when you make a mistake.

If you were in my friends situation, how would you deal with it?

PS: this year was so out of control my "social worker senses" are shot. it's up to you to decide her fate! lol.

wow, this is such a tough situation! i'm sorry for your friend!

the thing is... it's hard to get through to some people ojn sertain things. i had a friend that was in a relationship with this A-hole. he would put out his sigaret in her neck and he would grab her arm so hard that she had bruises on her arms afterwards. and i would tell her over and over that he was not worth this, and that she was worth much more then the threatment she got form him.... it tok a while but she listened....

i don't really have any good advice for you, but i want to tell you that i think it's great that you tell her that this is not okay! cause she needs to know that being abused like that is NOT okay. and she shouldn't put up with it! like you yourself said; if he can treat her like that, how can he love her. would she treat anyone she loves and care for like that? i don't know her, but i have a hard time imagining that most people would treat people they love in a bad matter...

i think you should tell her that what he is doing is not GOOD, and maybe aske her if she would ever treat him or anyone else she cares about the way that he treats her...

sorry i'm not much help. but i wish you luck!

Well... I have to say that you are very protective of your friends and for that I'm proud to be one of them. 😀

Lexie is right, these things are not very easy to drum into people sometimes. Your friend is obviously in love... or thinks she is. But this is not the end of the world. It may take some time and it may be hard but she will realise. And when she does she'll be in a bit of a mess and that's where you come in. I'll tell you a little something about psychology when it comes to relationships: If you try to push them apart it will only keep them together, and if you ignore it as much as possible then she will realise it's not right. I know it's hard to just sit by and watch but if you meddle then she will only resent you. The only thing you can really do is be there and make sure that she knows it's ok to stick up for herself.

As for him, there's no excuse. I was abused by my Father in loads of different ways and it only made me not want to be like him. I feel for him... because it's not a nice situation to be in but he needs to learn that the people you love are the ones who are going to be there for you in the end. And if he pushes them away then he'll have noone. That's a terrible position to be in.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of much help here my friend. But I've had a lot of friends who have been with the wrong people for the wrong reasons and it has never helped to get stuck in and meddle. The fact that it is her first boyfriend doesn't help one bit. Us girls have a tendency to fall in love with that one. But my first used me and it didn't take me too long to figure that one out. So hopefully she will come to her senses.

Best of luck

*hugs*

Oh goodness sweetie, the best advice I can give you is:

Talk to her about it. Tell her it bothers you that he has no respect for her.

Tell her he is exhibiting learned behaviour. He saw his father acting like that and he thinks it's an acceptable form of behavour.

Tell her he won't ever stop. Because he won't.

Then step back and let her one day realize it for herself. Hopefully she will before it's too late. Hopefully you pointing out that she is a wonderful woman and deserves to be treated like the princess she is will make her realize.

Other than that, just be her friend.

*hugs*

Eh. Well, I guess I can't do anything now. She started screaming at me in the hallway, yelling about how I was backstabbing her. Oh well...

Eeeep. Well she will eventually see what you see. Hang in there!

Oh and caring is NOT backstabbing!

I'm expecting to see the situation made into a live time movie any day now.

Hey!

Bud, your life sure is just packed...

I really like that you care so much for your friends, even when they don't deserve or appreciate it. I think this is one you've gotta let play out on its own...you have to be in this guy's presence...I suggest coolly polite is the way to go. Don't give him a reason to complain, but make it clear you really want to be somewhere else without being rude. If he's an idiot, leave. When he's not around, don't discuss him with your pal...even if she wants to...change the subject, walk away, whatever. She'll get the message, and will get tired of his shiite soon enough, once she realizes you guys won't put up with it.

I'll mail Fri, ok?

Later, dude!

She wrote me this letter the other day about how much she loved me and how much I impacted her life. I still have the letter although I'm not sure what I should do with it. I should probably burn it and send it back to her. Because I'm just some big evil person....
