What would you have done, in Buffy's place?

If Dawn was your sister, a magical key that would open the gateway to eternal pain and torment, would you have jumped in her place? Or would you figure the world would be better off? The entire world would have been better off if Dawn had jumped instead of Buffy. Dawn ultimately had no connection to anything, whereas we saw in Season 7, the Slayer line was connected to Buffy jumping. So if you really, really think about it, Buffy is responsible for what happened to Anya, Xander, and everyone else. They wouldn't have had to face the First, they would still be living in Sunnydale. They could have just used to same magics used on Buffy to bring back Dawn, with no consequences that I can see. But Buffy would have not brought her back, but let her be at peace, I think. I would have let Dawn jump. What about you?
 
I think that Buffy's determination to protect Dawn at all cost was as much a factor of the priests' spell as any sibling affection or feelings of responsibility. Let's face it, Dawn, from Day 1, was never the most lovable little twit in the world, always screaming, "Get out, get out, GET OUT!!" every time things didn't go exactly her way. If I had to choose between Buffy or Dawn going off of that tower, Dawn would be getting her first skydiving lesson. And just think how much better the next 2 seasons would have been without her.

even though how much they annoy you, you'd still die for them, i know i wish it was Dawn instead of Buffy, but really would the audience care if it was Dawn?
so it wouldn't have been as effective.
 
But Buffy wasn't thinking of the fate of the world, or what this would mean for the Slayer line, or even how annoying Dawn was. She was thinking that it was her little sister's life on the line, and she was willing to do what it took to save her. It's that simple.

I would not have jumped as logically thought Buffy death should not have closed the portal. Kind of weird that the so called connection worked on wrong way -- if made after someone you would expect the derivate to gain attributes of the original, not the other way. Or in other words Dawn would been a slayer (not potential, already a slayer).
 
Either way they would have had the same blood, in essence. If Dawn was molded by Buffy and her mother's DNA, they would have had the same "blood". They would have shared alot of the same things, meaning their blood was the same. Let's not forget the fact that it is not logical to put a mystical energy force into human form in the first place, so the logistics surrounding that don't matter... Genetically, Buffy and Dawn were crafted to be related, Buffy's blood was Dawn's blood... I don't know it makes sense to me...

I would have jumped to save my sister, no questions asked. At that point it didn't matter if she was ACTUALLY related to her or not. I think Buffy would have done the same if it was one of her friends or even a stranger, if she thought she could save someone by sacrificing herself, I think she would have done it.
 
Firstly, if Dawn was my sister, i would n't have let her jump, I would have thrown the ennoying wench, dragged her back up the tower and thrown her again just to make sure.
Secondly, Buffy was not responsible for what happened to the slayer line etc, Willow, Xander Tara an \Anya were responsible for bringing her back ( glad they did though, go team!)
Thirdly, my whole take on season 5 is that Buffy wanted to die
Lastly regardless if you want to believe Dawn is the same as buffy, her daughter,clone sister etc
if blood will open the gate and it will not close until all thebloo is gone - if buffy and dawn are the same would it not have needed both of them to die to close it ???

Good call on the Slayer Deathwish covered by Spike in other episodes, I thought the same thing.
I think I would have jumped. If it was actually down to who's gonna go, me or my sister, I think I'd do it. Then again, my sister is a lot cooler than Dawn.
 
Well, if Dawn was my sister, she'd have been dead long before Glory could even get her hands on her because I'd have ended up strangling the little brat myself in an earlier episode.

Joking aside, I probably would have jumped too. Buffy was always so selfless when it came to saving the world, so I think even if Dawn wasn't her sister she'd have ended up jumping either way.

Well if I was Buffy and Joyce was still a lie, I would push Dawn off and make it seem like she jumped. Besides, Joyce wasn't as attached to Dawn as she was to Buffy, if you will.
 
Yeah i think she would of still jumped, it's a whole hero thing. She would rather her thn anyone else.

Yeah, Buffy and Angel are into the whole sacrificing themselves for the greater good thing. I don't know what I'd do if I was Buffy, but if we're talking about my real sister then I'd definitely let (or force :whistle🙂 her jump, and maybe give her a wee push...

So if Joyce had been alive, Buffy would have completely disregarded both a) her duty as a Slayer and b) her duty as an older sister, and let Dawn jump?

I highly doubt that.

Buffy was never the type to let an innocent or a civilian do the job that she needed to do. Why would there be an exception if the innocent were her own flesh and blood? Makes no sense.
 
She'd have still jumped, IMO.

Aswell as having the time to properley say goodbye to her mother, she'd not have had to worry about Dawn being well looked after.
 
First off I have to agree with mikey down there. I think the underlying fact that Spike and Buffy discuss earlier is the 'slayer death wish.' Spike talked about it allowing him to kill two other slayers, and I think Buffy was ultimately happy to go, to finally be released from her mission.

What I gathered from the series is that Buffy feels extremely put-upon. The whole 'I didn't ask for this I don't want this I just want to be like everyone else' thing. That's not to say she isn't heroic but that I think ultimately this was her way out. She certainly isn't happy at all to be back in Season 6 and seems to become huge raging B-word for a lot of that season. Not that I blame her, she got a raw deal, pulled out of heaven, working at the Doublemeat etc. Ultimately however I think she didn't mind sacrificing herself, she wanted it to be over with.


To the next point, Buffy is the kind of person who would have taken the plunge to save Xander, Willow, Joyce, Angel, Dawn, Giles and probably a number of others. However, the difference is, everyone from Angel all the way down to Cordelia and Oz wouldn't have let her, they would have gone in her stead.

Dawn is NOT a hero like the rest, she is a little innocent brat girl, she is not ONLY Buffy's sister, she is who Buffy was chosen to save. Buffy was made a slayer to protect all the Dawns of the world, that's her mission, to not jump would be to fail her mission.

Final point, if Joyce was alive, then Buffy would have been even more willing to jump as there would have been someone to take care of Dawn closer then Xan, Will and Spike.


So anyway those are my thoughts.

That's what I think too. Buffy cared as much for the Scoobies and Giles without any spell to make her care. She was rarely that affectionate with Dawn plus she was jealous of the attention Joyce was giving Dawn. So why all of a sudden is she so willing to die for Dawn. The monk's spell was playing on her emotions and capacity to reason well. In season 7, after she has died and come back, she was already willing to sacrifice Dawn if needed. I thought that was because the spell was broken when she died.

If the character of Dawn was my sister and in the same circumstances, I'd let her jump. I'd be doing her a favour because she would ultimately fall apart anyway because she was a product of magic. Glory was Dawn's responsibility. It's not Dawn's fault, it's just the way it is. Even Dawn, annoying as she was, realised that. She was willing to jump.
