What would you have done, in Buffy's place?

I don't think I would have jumped if it were my sister, but that might just be my sister too.

Buffy wanted to save the world and I think part of her really wanted to die...excpcally after her new love interest turned out to be the evil person again.
 
I think any good person would have jumped to save their sister. I know I would have if I were Buffy, and the fact that she did proves that she's a good person... someone worthy of her title as the slayer. She's there to fight evil and protect the innocent, and it would've been wrong if she'd let Dawn die.
 
You know that always buged me. I mean I never loved Dawn that much, and I must say I started to hating her when Buffy jumped instead of her. I never saw her like a great character. And I do think it would be better if she jumped. But I guess it was Buffy's decision. She thought it was her destiny. That she has to do that. Save the world. For one last time. It was like in one way she was tired of fighting, but in one way it was because of her love for Dawn. I don't understand that brother/sister thing, I must say I'm a bit selfish in that part.
 
I have a little sister, and I would jump into anything to save her. I understand Buffy, she did the right thing. (Let's forget that I can't stand Dawn 😀)

She was rarely that affectionate with Dawn plus she was jealous of the attention Joyce was giving Dawn. So why all of a sudden is she so willing to die for Dawn. The monk's spell was playing on her emotions and capacity to reason well. In season 7, after she has died and come back, she was already willing to sacrifice Dawn if needed. I thought that was because the spell was broken when she died.

If the character of Dawn was my sister and in the same circumstances, I'd let her jump. I'd be doing her a favour because she would ultimately fall apart anyway because she was a product of magic. Glory was Dawn's responsibility. It's not Dawn's fault, it's just the way it is. Even Dawn, annoying as she was, realised that. She was willing to jump.

When I was a teenager, I was not remotely affectionate with my sisters, who annoyed the crap out of me much how Dawn annoyed Buffy. But I still loved them, and I'd have jumped. Probably from the outside it would have looked like I loved my friends better, but that's because I lived with my sisters so they were always there to get under my skin. Dawn wasn't truly Buffy's sister from birth, but she had all the memories of their life together so she might as well have been.

Great topic.

Personally, it's hard for me to imagine what it would be like to be in Buff's place. It's just a unimaginable situation for me. In this instance, Buffy showed a moment of weakness. She loved Dawn. She was the only "real" family she had left after Joyce had died. Her father had left, Dawn was all she had connecting her to this Earth. She lived for her. For Buffy, it was a personal decision - she couldn't have lived with herself if she had allowed Dawn to jump. That was the reality. What it the "right" decision to jump? Well, that's debatable. Technically, in my opinion - no, it wasn't. She should have let Dawn jump BUT she couldn't. That's the reality of the situation.

Yet, it's worth noting that later on, in LMPTM, she tells Giles that if she had too, she'd let Dawn die to save the world. So, with added perspective, she now see's the bigger picture.

Buffy is a hero, but she's also human. She couldn't let her sister die. We are defined by the decisions we make. Would Buffy be the same person to but if she had let Dawn die? Even it arguably it was the right thing to do - Buffy knew she couldn't live with the guilt of that decision. Buffy is a hero, she is in part defined by her sacrifice for her sister. That in my eyes, makes her incredible.

I would have jumped for my sister. I love my sister alot and I would have protected her. I like the fact that people brought up what they think Buffy would have done if Joyce was still alive. I think she would have still jumped because even then, she is the big sister and she feels her job is to protect dawn. I also think Buffy was tired of having this seemingly never-ending mision of being the chosen one and knew that her destiny was death.

And then I pretty much agree with everything else Joan said, cause I think her post is great and I can't come up with creative smart things to say like she can 😛
 
I have a brother and sister both older than me...if they were in danger and it was me or them...i would jump

i hate the fact that Buffy jumped but i understand her...she gave us one of the most heroic and emotional scenes on tv...i cry every time she jumps.
She saves her sister,she saves the world and she FINALLY gets some peace...but not for long...poor Buffy

This assumes the impetus for Dawn's existance is a human soul, and not a green ball of heat and light. Resurrection magic would likely not have worked on Dawn because she doesn't have a soul to restore.

As an only child, I have to say realistically I would have let her jump if she asked, justifying it too myself that she is not really my sister, or a person, and the memories are fake, but I probably would have felt bad about it afterward.

But first I would have tried strangling her until her heart stopped, then bringing her back with CPR after the portal closed, like what happened to Buffy in season one.

Without killing anyone, it would have been rather dramatic in its own way. After insisting that noone kill Dawn, when the portal opens Buffy has a lightbulb moment and, without explaining it to the audience, strangles Dawn into unconsciousness. Come back from commercial, and Buffy resuscitates Dawn. For extra feeling of sacrifice, have Dawns throat be all bruised, and have her talk like she'd been strangled by a Slayer for the first few episodes of season 6, and have Buffy feel guilty about having taken the risk. Perhaps ending with the musical episode, which incidentally restores her voice (since presumably as demon princess she would have to sing). And; Death is still her Gift 🙂
 
That would've been an interesting twist. And it sure would have changed everything that came after. We probably would not have had any Spuffy action (or not in the same way, anyway), since it was her emotional issues from being dragged back from heaven that drove her to that. So, I'm glad she jumped 😉

Good point, but there is a difference between what we would have seen in real life, and what would likely have been worked into the story to give Spike a bigger part. If it wasn't this, it would have been something else.
 
i would have jumped i mean if it was me i would'nt want to see my sister die in a world where she was literally placed in - if that makes sense. i'd have wanted to jump and give everyone a normal life.
 
Easier said than done, but yes I would have taken her place. I know that I would do it if were between myself and wife and even though my sisters were the biggest pains when we were kids I would even do it in their places. At the end of the day who have you done the favour for? You are gone and out of it, no more struggles and they are left still trying to survive each day. BUt I would do it for good old fashioned love!
 
I think Buffy made the right choice when she jumped. I dont think it would have changed anything in season 7 if she had let Dawn jump. I know that Dawn could be really anoying sometimes but she did do things to help out sometimes. I think it would have been way diffrent if they had killed Dawn.
 
I think that if I was Buffy, then I would've not jumped, especially when Dawn was all willing to sacrifice her life because of the pain she was causing everyone. But that's what makes Buffy the hero. She's the kind of person that would give her life to save the world. Like what Giles said at the season 5 finale to Ben. That's kinda why she's so screwed up when she was brought back.
 
Give your life to save Dawn? Or course you would, older or younger sister, wouldn't matter
