What characters or story arcs would you have liked to have seen explored in Season 7?

This isn't exactly a "what would you change" thread like "get rid of the Potentials" or "get rid of Kennedy" it's more of "what would you have added" or "what would you have addressed?"

I would have kept Tara alive and explored her character independent of Willow or bring back Oz and explore his character's journeys. The audience had a lot more to learn about Oz and/or Tara aside from their relationships with Willow.

I would have really focused on Xander much more. Again, I think his character still had potential and interesting places to go beyond one or two stand alone eps.

I would have brought Faith back sooner and taken time to really pick apart her relationship and past with Buffy and the events of Season 3.

You know, I would really like if they focused more on the gang and their friendship instead of their love interests.

I would really like to see Buffy and Giles talking about their problems.

I think we could have still had the Potential storyline without them as individuals being so central. I don't see why Willow needed a love interest at all in season 7 actually. I wish that Dawn's friends (the new gen Scoobies lol) would have been explored more. The season started strong I think, with the issue of "power". I think they should have done more with that. I like The First manipulating Spike, that makes sense with what we know from season 3, although it being noncorporeal doesn't quite fit (I believe The First in season 3 touched Angel, right?). I'm not so sure I like The Trigger though, although it does lead to that hilarious line: "So, he has a trigger, a soul, and a chip?"

awesome post! and good point about the first being noncorporeal. she does rest angel's head in her lap
Maybe something with Dawn and what it means to have been The Key. I know she's human but did the Monk folk litterally just change the energy into flesh, energy ceasing to exist? Or would there be something more for Dawn, an advantage or a disadvantage?

Oz and Dru closure and maybe a happy ending for a couple.

Yes about Dawn & The Key.

yes, definitely more about dawn and her being the key!
Dawn's anger towards Spike. Maybe guilt that she used to like Spike.

I bet she's reasonable enough to lose some of the anger with Spike, since he got his soul back and all, but some friction betweem them other than that one scene.

Willow and her magic.

I get that she went to "witch rehab" but I never understood how she was so powerful in the first place and how she turned 'dark willow' when casting spells but when channeling the essence of the scythe she was fine.

I agree. Xander's character was never explored enough or well, we get hints about his issues, fears, feelings but not enough to understand his character fully. He also has a lot of potential for different types of storylines because of his flawed character but alas. Sometimes I feel the writers only see the "superpower" and not the character and because Xander doesn't have a superpower, he's not important or interesting enough.

I would have added a story for Giles, Faith, Willow and Xander. The whole season they were basically furniture. It's sad to see characters who developed so much over the years become so insignificant to the show

YES. this!!
The Scooies and the state of their friendship. They were coming off a year of individual personal disaster for all of them, I think the argument in Selfless, between Buffy,Willow and Xander, kicked open the door for that exploration of their friendship to begin, and they just wasted it.

The other thing I would like to have seen is Buffy dealing with the AR. I want to know how it affected her. I want to know what that summer was like. I want to know what seeing Spike again meant for her? How did she get past it? How did she deal. I think it is even more important that we she a "strong" woman deal with these issues. Because she would have had those issues to deal with, slayer or not. And it is so necessary for women seeing their hero deal with this very scary and traumatizing experiencing. Instead it was played out like Buffy is strong therefore it didn't affect her all that much. That's not enough. In fact, I think it is reckless and negligent of the show to introduce this issue and not handle it properly.

I would have liked to have seen Buffy and Faith have more of a discussion about their past and the events that transpired and what led Faith back to Sunnydale to help.
They had their few moments, but I would have liked to have seen more, though there's only so much you could explore within five episodes which was unfortunate.

I've been of the opinion that the AR ceased to be an issue with her the moment that she discovered that Spike had regained his soul. She saw Angel and Angelus as pretty much two different people. I think that she saw the new version of Spike in the same manner. It was Giles and the others who still saw only the old Spike, and that was the cause of a lot of their issues with Buffy.

I kinda felt that way too.

But that is all about Spike. I am interested in how Buffy dealt with the ordeal. Whether she viewed soulled Spike as her attacker or not is not what I am interested in. I want to know how Buffy dealt with the actual attack. How it affected her. What she went through. Did it change her? Who did it is a secondary matter.

I do agree that it really did focus on how Spike reacted to the AR than how Buffy did. I'm thinking maybe it's because Buffy couldn't talk to anyone about it objectively. She didn't need to get yelled at about how bad everything with Spike was. Which is what her friends were mainly offering.

I think that moment in the bathroom after where she is sitting alone and Xander finds her, really reinforced that for her. So she bottled it up right then. To the point that she would take her sister to him for protection even after that. Bottling is a pretty common reaction after an event like that. Some people never talk about it again.

So, I think that may have been her way of coping. Hiding her feelings from everyone and that includes us, the audience. Which does say something about her character. She took all that on, so that the people she cares about wouldn't have to be affected by it.

However, I do think that they could have had her handle it a little differently. This type of experience, well it can be life changing. It can change the way that a person views men for years afterward.

So I'm trying to say that I agree that the writers could have explored her emotions a little more. But I also don't mind the way that they did it. I guess.

I know I am being pedantic here, but we need to see that bottling up. However she reacted. However it affected her, we needed to be let in on that. Even if none of characters were, we needed to see that. That same way they never saw how devastated she was by Angel's losing his soul, or sending him to Hell, or her mother being sick and dying, or coming back from Heaven. They didn't see what those events did to her, but we did. Without it, it looks like Buffy just shook herself down, and that was it. No more. That feel so very wrong to me.

Ah! Ok I see what you are saying. It is really really hard to get into Buffy's head and figure out what she is thinking. It would be great if they really did show more of her. So that we could get a better idea of what she felt and thought about a lot of things. Mostly we have to just speculate. Which I like to do, but at the same time. I want to KNOW! Ya know? 🙂

Yep, yep, and more yep.
And since they kinda touched on it in "Potential", I would have liked to see more interaction in a romantic sense between Xander/Dawn.

My mistake. (For some reason I always feel the need to defend Spike whenever you're around. Don't ask me why) Yeah, I can see that as an issue that needed to be addressed, even if only with nothing more than a dropped comment. Something like that would have to be at least as traumatic as losing her mother, if not worse.

I think it would have been cool if they were working more on their friendships and how far they would go for one another instead of SO MUCH ROMANCE!!! But I did love that Angel came in town and it started messing with Buffy and Spike's relationship

I wanted to see Spike and Xander have a few scenes together.

And Dawn talk to Spike more about what happened with him and Buffy in the bathroom...maybe mend their friendship, cause they never really talked again.
