Finally, a ‘competitive’ sport where we’re all considered elite athletes!

The Space Out Competition is an annual event wherein contestants do absolutely nothing. The person who can chill and space out the longest wins!

The competition, which was held a few weeks ago at Ichon Hangang Park, Seoul, was created by visual artist WoopsYang back in 2014. She came up with it after experiencing work burnout and realised society also needed a break.

“I thought to myself, we would all feel better about doing nothing if we did nothing together as a group,” she told VICE.

The 70 competitors (from a pool of 2000) aren’t allowed to use their gadgets, sleep, or even talk. Their heart rates are even checked for stability, with the most consistent hailed by the judges as the victor.

Heck, there are even sports commentators giving ‘exciting’ blow-by-blow updates.

With South Korea having one of the most stressed-out nations in the world, WoopsYang hopes this piece of performance art would encourage people to give their brains the occasional rest. She also plans to take the contest to other anxiety-filled cities like Beijing.

you need to move? after the brexit vote that joke isnt as funny.
Athena if you wait awhile, imagine what your reply to Mr Pole could be when D. Trump becomes American President.

So it's basically group meditation?

That's a great idea but I'm not sure how I feel about 'competitive meditation'. Kind of defeats the purpose of mindfulness.

Would I be allowed to draw? Or colour in one of those adult colouring books? I could sit for hours and hours and do that.

Not sure I could sit for that long doing nothing, even when I'm watching tv I have to be doing something else (puzzles, browsing online, colouring).

I just found the perfect magazine for designing women's clothes. At least I think it is for that purpose.

I don't know how well this would work for me. The fact that it's a competition alone would make me anxious and stressed LOL. I'm also not a chill person.. I almost always have to be moving around or I get really antsy.

It's a good idea, giving your brain a rest, put me in the fall asleep camp though.

Taake, how brave of you to admit you've gone to sleep when I am around. And given I like designing women's clothing, I might imagine you are wearing an 1890's type bikini (or its equivalent) over your other clothes. But you should feel happy as I might imagine you to be wearing the same type of boots Mini Gwennie Poohs wear when she goes for walks with mum over the moors on her famous wild Haggis hunts.
It is flaming cold here right now, there is a ruddy great tree between my place and the sun, it'll be 11:30 before the sunlight gets on the place.

That's creepy...
Trust the Koreans to take rest and relaxation and turn it into a competitive sport with all the stresses that involves. As someone who was in Tae Kwon Do for nine years and became an assistant instructor, I can vouch for the fact that relaxation for Koreans is a lot more fun and relaxing once they have had a bit of alcohol in their systems.

I wasn't in fact, one could say I did Tae Kwon Don't. On the other hand one might prefer not to say that.
