Buffy, as a slayer had to make many decisions. But sometimes her decisions created chaos or even death (season 7, Empty Places, for example), to herself or to others. So what do you think were the best and worst decisions she has made?

I think the worst decision she ever made was allowing those ungrateful a-holes to kick her out of her own house in Empty Places. It always makes me so mad that she lets them do that.

As for best decision? Sleeping with Parker, CLEARLY. 😉

Best decision Buffy ever made was to put her trust in Willow with the scythe even know she was unstable at the time.

The worst was leaving Faith in charge of the slayerettes.

Best decision: Sending Angel to hell (and I'm not only referring to Bangel death 😛). What I mean, she loved him, she was an irrational teenager, she saw the return of her lover. It would've been understandable if she had just said 'to hell with it all' (pun intended, haha) and doomed the entire world just for Angel. But she didn't. She did the morally superior thing and sacfcrificed Angel. If she hadn't done that, everyone would have had a problem, so in my opinion her best decision.

Worst decision: I can't pin down one exact decision, but generally all the time she decided to go egotripping. COme on, she just turned into a total bitca all these times.

Best decision: killing Angel to save the world

Worst decision: hooking up with spike.

lol, I was thinking the exact same thing about worst decision, but then i thought 'meeeh, I dont really hate Spuffy'
Hmmm...best, when she followed her instincts about people, trusting some who hadn't always been so trustworthy, expecting the best and for them to come through when needed.

Worst, the way she treated Dawn season 5-6...overprotective, much younger than she was.

I know those are really general, so I'll try to be more specific...

worst, um, maybe sleeping with Angel, I mean , that turned out all kinds of bad, way worse than Parker,

best...Her plan to share the slayage with the potentials, end the lonely cycle of "only one", and close the hell mouth

Off the top of my head...

Worst? I'd say sacrificing herself to save Dawn. I understand where she was coming from and all, but in terms of her Slayer duties? Not a smart move. Very selfish on her part.

The best? Breaking up with Angel. 🙂

Best Decision: Wearing that dress in Prophecy Girl

Worst Decision: Singing Macho Man in The Witch. I don't care that she was under a spell - that is never acceptable, well maybe in the 80's when everything was apparently acceptable.

lol nice, i found that song anoying too :p
I think the best decision she made was finally telling her mom the truth. She's going to be in danger with or without the knowledge of Buffy's destiny, may as well let her IN on it so she can protect herself and know what she's dealing with.

I think the worst decision she ever made was... I'll come back to this.

agreed about telling joyce. and love your banner!
Best Decision: I suppose killing Angel

Worst Decision: Not killing Dawn in Season 5, I mean that was worse than her running away. At least she had a chance of returning then, this time she just left the fate of the world up to her friends again. She said she would choose Dawn over the world and she pretty much came through on that promise since there was no guardian of the Hellmouth now. Although it seemed like she believed another Slayer could be called so maybe it wasn't so bad after all.

She did not kill Angel she sent him to hell.
The Slayer'sjob is to protect the innocent from all the nasties of the world.

Dawn was innocent. I don't know why people are saying that was a bad decision. It was the right thing to do. The moment the Slayer puts the Slayer first, they turn into Faith circa season 3.

Buffy's worst decision was sleeping with Spike and pursuing a destructive relationship (of sorts) with him. This is not just because of Bangel ( I swear!) but Buffy loses herself, she loses the hero in her by embarking on this relationship. She forgoes responibilities both as a sister and care-giver to Dawn, as a friend and as the Slayer. Her world very much implodes around her and her sexual dalliances with Spike really brings her no good other than to further mask and increase the depression she already felt.

Her best decision was standing her ground in Empty Places and believing in herself. She was right, it showed the strenght of her character that she could pick herslef up after that (with some help from Spike). It showed that after 7 years Buffy still believed with conviction that she was the right Slayer for the job. After so long and so many trials that was really something.

Great post. And I agree that Spuffy was destructive...even though I'm a fan :)

BUT it does bring her good.
Its her relationship that pushes Spike to attempt to rape her, which in turn sends him on a journey to get his Soul back WHICH gives him the ability to be there for her when everyone turfs her out which gives her the strength to go get the Scythe which allows her to kill Caleb.

No one can truly know the consequences of our decisions so what might seem wrong at a point in time could actually be important in the scheme of things.

Great point indeed!

That could be said every suggestion made in this thread, all we can do is give our reasons why we think it was the worst. And as you said yourself, we don't know the consequences of our decisions; if Buffy hadn't slept with Spike a different series of events would have happened from Smashed on, who knows what would and would not have happened.

Well quite, thats why I don't view any decision she made as bad because the end result (not including the Comics) is very good.

We don't have experience of another time line, so we cannot know the ramifications of different choices, all we have is this one and if you judge the end by the choices made to get there, then we can't, in this case. really complain because the world was saved.

I find it difficult to choose a 'best decision' and 'worst decision' made by Buffy. Should I name the best and worst decisions she made for herself? Or on behalf of the world? Or on behalf of her friends? Or on behalf of the potential slayers?

As many people have often said about Xander her bad decision are never made with malice intended. So I find it even harder to say what her worst decision was.

Although I can see where you are coming from when you say this, I respectfully disagree with you Kean when you say her worst decision was getting involved with Spike. I believe this relationship (destructive as it may be) made her grow into a better person.

All of these so called 'bad' decisions have had positive long term or short term effects in Buffy's life. And I won't even try to argue the many different 'Buffy should have let Dawn die comments'. There is no way in the world that I would let my most loved ones die while there were other options available.

Disagree away hun:) Although personally I believe Buffy could have achieved that growth without hurting herself and Spike so much. Yes, she learned lessons but they weren't necessarily lessons she needed to learn.

Hahaha. This cracked me up. 🙂

Ok, let's see...

Best decision? Tie between a) sacrificing Angel and b) sharing the Slayer power.
a) because for as naive and young and foolish as many people claim Bangel is, Buffy was incredibly grown-up and mature with this decision. She was very young, and very in love, and in the moment where Angel was good again and she could have been incredibly weak, she showed amazing strength and did the right thing for the world. She proved herself as a truly strong, responsible Slayer at this point.
b) because it resolved so many things...the isolation the Slayer feels, the incredible weight it puts on her shoulders, the fact that a Slayer can't really have any future, any family, any lasting relationships..and it ended the archaic ritual of calling a Slayer, using her until she dies, then calling another one...I really liked it when this happened, and it was a very smart thing to do.

Honorable mention: Staying in Sunnydale at the end of S3. She could have gone off to a great school and neglected her duties. But she chose to stay, which I've always admired.

Worst decision?
Well, I would say the S6 relationship with Spike, because I don't like it at all, but I do think a lot of good came out of that. I'm not so sure that Buffy would have been able to get over her depression in the same way and within the same amount of time had she not had this outlet...yes, it was a very unhealthy one, but I think Buffy's "recovery" from depression, and from this relationship, was a delicate work in progress. I think it had to happen.

So instead I'll go with her attitude toward Willow in S6. Yes, I realized Buffy was depressed, and I also realize Buffy was making connections between Willow's addiction and her relationship with Spike, and therefore making allowances and excuses for Willow...but c'mon! Willow needed help. And Buffy, who is supposed to sense when people need help, was completely oblivious until it got so bad her sister almost died. I feel so bad for Willow in these episodes. She was making her own choices and should be held accountable for them, yes, but her friends were just acting so clueless.
That's probably not *the* worst decision, if I thought about it more. But it's one that stands out!
