[Whedonesque] City Paper declares 'Serenity' one of 'the year's sharpest political movies.'

Wow, to me, Firefly and Serenity were NEVER overtly political, at least not about anything that has happened in the last hundred years. I think I'll have to read the whole article and then comment, but I just never connected Mal and crew with some leftist ideology or ideal. To me it was always very very very! much about the frontier and the fictional war between the Alliance and the Browncoats, and by extension, the real War Between the States. Now I have to go watch the movie again! Woot! Not that I need an excuse...
 
It's interesting. I've seen folks saying it's a liberal critique of the Bush Adminsitration and nation-building, a conservative Libertarian manifesto against big government intrusion...

It's vague enough to comfort all kinds of people, reaffirm people's generic ideals about freedom, self-determination.

I just respond to it cos it seems like it's sort of anti-unthinking fanatic, anti-human nature tampering (like Brave New World). Anti-utopian.
