Whedon's 'blonde heroine' & DVD extras

I first watched this show through Netflix's streaming option, and so I've never caught any of the DVD extras. Out of curiosity, and unemployment and a bad cold that has me thinking, "eh, I'll watch it again", I rented the first disc of season 1 so I could see Whedon's interview. It was sadly very short, but I liked what he said about the importance of having a blonde heroine- it's always the blonde who first gets it in horror movies. It makes me wonder if this had anything to do with his choosing Gellar (as opposed to Carpenter) for the role of Buffy. Obviously, it was much more than that, but still.

Overall, I was pretty disappointed in the DVD extras. The interview was ridiculously short, and the outtakes were just as not-worth-waiting-for-the-dvd. (Actually, I may be thinking of another dvd with outtakes.) Can anyone recommend particular discs that have more satisfying bonus features, or do they all sort of fall short?
 
There were out-takes? My copy of season 1 disk 1 does not have out-takes. In fact, none of my disks have out-takes until (I think) season 5.

I can't answer your question - I'm not big on special features, myself, and almost never watch them. The only one I've seen- but it was excellent - is the featurette on the making of OMWF.
 
Is there an audio commentary on the first episode/s? I can't remember which episodes have them, but commentaries are my favorite DVD extras!

Yeah, there are audio commentaries on Welcome to the Hellmouth and The Harvest, I think. :)
Wasn't SMG brunette when she originally auditioned for the role? I know she's originally brunette and she went back to her natural color for a while when the show ended.

I don't think it was the fact that SMG was blonde that won her the role, I think it was her brown belt in some form of martial arts that won Joss over in the end.
 
I don't remember the special features of season 1's DVD, but I do remember the very short interviews from season 2, so maybe that's what you mean.

Anyway, Sarah auditioned 11 times before she got Buffy's role (and she dyed her hair blonde for that part), so I'm guessing they tested many criterions, not just if she could pretend fighting evil, not just if she's pretty, or talented or good actor. My guess is during all those 11 auditions they realized she's got the whole package. That's my theory.
 
Ah, yes. I think she has a brown belt (2 away from black) in taekwondo. Not a bad talent to have for such a character. Obviously, I think Gellar was phenomenally perfect for this role (as I'm sure every Buffy fan feels). As a petite woman myself, I really appreciate that she's absolutely tiny, and manages to kick major booty. I also think her physique works great for those high school teenage years, where she actually looks like a teenager, and is still vulnerable and naive in a lot of ways. (Whereas an actress like Carpenter seems too physically mature at times; though, of course, it works for the character of Cordelia.)
 
As mentioned above, I don't think they casted SMG just because she was blonde. They could have dyed the actress' hair blonde if it wasn't already.

I think Sarah is the perfect Buffy and I cannot imagine anyone else being her. Even now SMG can pull off the high school-look, but they made her look really mature and grown up in later seasons.

I never knew she had a brown belt, that's really interesting! I always wondered if SMG had to do any training to be able to do those high-kicks, etc. She also even pulled off some Buffy moves in Scooby-Doo!
 
Season 3 (I think) has some nice extras that go behind the scenes about makeup, special effects & set. I love that kind of stuff. The making of OMWF is great too. I haven't watched any of the commentaries but they look good. I read the transcript for the Wild at Heart commentary with Joss & Seth Green and it sounds hilarious!

Same didn't get out-takes until season 5

My favorite extra's from the DVD's are the audio commentaries. The more the better!
 
I usually don't like commentaries unless it features some cast members. Does any of the Buffy commentaries include any cast members? (besides Seth Green..)
 
Season 1 had pretty bad special features. Season 2-7 are all equally awesome. Check wikipedia for what each specific disc has on it (it's accurate, I checked)
 
Season 1 definitely doesn't have the best special features, but the Joss Whedon discussion about episodes is pretty neat. There's also some Joss commentaries I haven't checked out yet, but they should be pretty cool.
