Whedonverse Podcast Interviews The Master Mark Metcalf!

Enjoyable interview he sounds like a very cool guy with his feet on the ground. Great character actor too who was impressive in Seinfeld as well as the Master.

Wow, that was seriously great! I love The Master, it's one of my favorites on the show, so it's nice to read that he seemed to enjoy playing him. Also Metcalf seems like a really nice and funny guy. It's so great that you guys go him to do this. I very much enjoyed this interview!

And haha, aw, I can see how he'd be bummed if someone (even just for a prank) said he actually looked like the Master;

METCALF No! God, I hope not. Not after all that makeup! There was one time. I owned a restaurant for a while out in Wisconsin, and somebody came into the restaurant. I sat them at their table, and as I was walking away they said, ‘Hey, aren’t you the – didn’t you play The Master on Buffy the Vampire Slayer?’ and I looked at him and said, ‘You recognize me?’ and he says ‘Yeah! You look exactly like him!’ I was honestly depressed for a week.

And oh...

METCALF
No. No, not at all! I mean, I thought it was really good writing, which I thought probably meant that it had a good chance of failing. (laughs) Because good writing often does fail in television. Especially network televisio

*sad face* Firefly anyone...?

Great interview, really enjoyed it. I do love The Master and wish we had gotten more of him. I liked hearing that Metcalf helped come up with a lot of the Master's look and feel. It's what makes him work so well. Fruit punch mouth!

Great interview- quite a few interesting things I never knew, lik Metcalf being responsible for the Master's 'look'. Plus it seems like he was another one who got 'accidentally' cast when he showed up the audition.
Seems like Joss was very careful when it came to ALL the casting, not just the main casting.

The best part is that some woman somewhere's claim to fame is that 'I helped The Master got to the bathroom. I had to handle his junk.' 😱

He sounds like a great guy- and its great that he's up for doing voice acting work for Buffy, so if they ever do convert S8 into animation, he'll be on hand to play his part. 🙂

Yeah that did make me crack up too!😀

Only part I was unsure about is about the Master being cut from that scene in S2 and Angel taking his place. Was he saying that we see the Master but it turns out to be Angel, or was that scene just cut all together in the end? Don't remember anything involving the Master that season but could be wrong.

Glad to hear that everyone liked the interview! Mark is a really great guy to talk to.

To respond to this, in 'When She Was Bad' Buffy has a few flashbacks and dreams of the Master (I counted approximately 5 seconds of screen time total). Since Mark was unavailable, David Boreanaz was in the makeup playing The Master since he says nothing and just growls menacingly. It looks close, but just a little bit off!
