When Angel meets Buffy

I'm rewatching the first episode and I get to the point where Buffy smacks Angel in the head with her feet.
He gets up and looks at her then says something like "I thought you would be bigger and have more muscles..."
Is it just me or does that sound like he never saw her before? According to another later episode, he sees her become the slayer, so he should know of her and know what she looks like, right?
Why does he say something that sounds like he never saw her before?
Maybe it's one of those things that can be taken both ways.
 
I know. That bothers me too. Obviously Angel wasnt a main character then I dont think Joss knew he was gonna be a vampire. Or even be in it agian. So he wont have come up with the backstory yet. Obviously just a continuity error. It annoys me though!
 
how do we know Angel was teling the truth? he didn't know if Buffy was going to allow him to be apart of her life at this stage, so did he really want to tell a sixteen year old girl, who is also the slayer, that he's been following her around for the past year or so?

I was just about to say the same thing. Great minds :)
Season1 Angel really liked to get underneith Buffys skin, so I found his first meeting,he was just toying around with her.
 
BUT that still doesnt explain how the Slayer didnt sense he was a vampire.

how does this theory work?
The Slayer senses the Vampire through their lack of soul...Angel would register to this sense because of.....
 
I think throughout the whole first season a lot was made that Buffy's vampire sensing tinglies just weren't up to snuff yet. In the first or second episode - she spots the vamp in the bronze for Giles by his outfit, not because she sensed him.

I think it was probably a continuity error, but since God is infailable, I'll just assume Joss was having Angel toy with Buffy... 🙂
 
also when you said when angel goes up to Buffy and says he thought she would be bigger, more muscle.... Angel had never actually stood that close to Buffy... only ever saw her from a far distance... so maybe he was suprised when he stood next to her... meh i dont know lol.... 😀
 
i think he said that just because he was playing with her, in season 1 he got under Buffys skin and Buffy annoyed him a little bit.it was kind of their thing that they had going on between them.
 
Well maybe Angel was toying with her - that explanation isn't too hard to swallow - but I always thought that it was just a case of the backstory on Buffy and Angel not being entirely formed when the first episode of the series was produced. That happens all the time in television - the whole story of Buffy's seven seasons wasn't likely to be in anyone's mind at its very beginning. Heck, no one knew if the show was going to last past its first half season! Also, the end result of the writing (over several seasons) wasn't the product of just one creator, a number of people contributed.

It's no biggie.

The slayers' vampire sense isn't infallible. In the series I can think of two other examples where it quite clearly fails. Forgive Buffy, she'd just been a year on the job at the time of this episode. 😉 She doesn't HONE, as Giles tells her in this very episode, lol!

This is a good point. Even though I think Angel was lying, the only time he saw her was the day she got called, killed her first vampire, and etc. That was when Buffy was like 14 or 15. It's been a whole year after that. Maybe he assumed Buffy would grow and get taller because a lot of teens do that in their early years. Also, he might have thought she was traning with her watcher the whole year and that could result in her getting pretty cut and muscular.

Just what i was about to say, I think half of it was Angel messin with her, and half of it was suprise..he might have said it both out of suprise that she wasn't bigger and just to annoy her, cuz like u guys all said he was tryin to get under B's skin that like entire season.
 
They way I see it he either didnt want to scare her by making her think he was some sort of creepy stalker or he ment he thought she would have grown/ aquired more muscles since he last saw her

How is it the writers and creators of BtVS did not know what they wanted from the charcater of Angel or who he was from the start?
I thought JW and crew were famous for planning things out years in advance!
Plus, the entire first season was filmed before one episode was even shown (at least that's what I heard). Would you film the entire thing and not know who this guy was?

Besides, Angel doesn't follow around any girl. He obviously knows who Buffy is, so what's the big guessing game sound-off?
 
when S1 first aired, Joss and co. didn't know if they were going to be picked up for another season. they were a mid-season replacement show. this is why all eps were filmed before airing and why the season ended without the usual cliffhanger of the other seasons.
when Joss originally came up with the idea for Angel, he assumed the character would last the first two or three eps, then either move on, or be killed off. but when he saw the chemistry between DB and SMG, he decided to keep him on and the story of Angel was developed, how he was a vampire with a soul, and so on.
because of the fact that the show was left up in the air when the season ended, could also explain why a lot of stuff in later seasons doesn't correspond with what we learnt in S1.

I have been on the internet all day looking for proof of this cos i knew I saw it somewhere. I wanted proof cos people seemed to just ignore my post and come up with reasons that it was on purpose.

I thought Id made it up. Guess not 🙂

The points made by Lyri and wolf make sense to me. I've sometimes wondered how Season 1 fits with the later show. Apologies for going off-topic but here's a partial list of questions.

1. I've wondered if the original plan was to have a lot more of the Buffy-Xander duo action that you see in "The Harvest"-if he was going to become her principal helper. With the idea that Angel wasn't meant to last for more than a few episodes, I wonder about that even more.

2. Was it always in the plan to have Willow become a witch? She plays a very minor role in the series first episode which deals explicitly with witchcraft, appropriately titled "Witch". I kind of doubt that it was in the plan at the beginning.

3. Would Darla have been killed off so early in the series, in the episode "Angel", if the Buffy PTB knew that they were going to have multiple seasons? With her departure Drusilla became the principal living female vampire in the next season, although there was plenty of Darla in flashbacks.

Angel had his soul, he acted human, he wore up to date clothes. Just looking at Buffy S1, her senses werent that strong, her main thing was first spot the vamps who still wore the era of clothing they died in.

Not to mention that Buffy wasnt trying to sense anything, it was her like 3rd day around the town of Sunnydale? Buffy was trying to repress her slayer side and embrace her normal side. So it makes perfect sense that Buffy didnt sense that Angel was a vampire.
 
Angel's line of "Don't worry, I don't bite" may have tipped off Buffy as to his identity.

Buffy: "Hmmm. I'm the VAMPIRE slayer, this guy shows up at night dressed in black and comes up with that line. This guy could be a...pharmacist"
