When can I start watching Angel?

Hello!

I'm new to the boards, and new to Buffy--I just started watching the re-televised episodes on TV. I'm currently on the beginning of season 3. I also purchased the first season of Angel on DVD and am anxious to start watching, but I'm afraid of seeing a spoiler to the Buffy plotline.

How long should I wait before starting the Angel series?

Angel starts nearly simultaneously with Buffy S4. I think it may have been 1 or 2 episodes behind, chronologically. I'm sure someone else will be able to give you a better idea of the timeline.

Buffy season 4 and Angel season 1 play out over the same time so you can watch them together. For the most part it's best to take an episode from each show in turn because the crossovers run better that way, so Buffy season 4 episode 1 followed by Angel season 1 episode 1, then Buffy ep 2, Angel ep 2 and so on. 😉
 
Like RM already said, first an episode of Buffy s4 and then Angel s1. This should pretty much work for all the season, probably also for the next one. But be careful after this, I think the order changed in s3.
 
Not so much for season 3. Buffy season 6 and Angel season 3 didn't really crossover other than the off screen Buffy/Angel meeting (that I won't explain here in case of spoilers for dietcokeaddict) but even that happens between the fourth and fifth episodes of both seasons. Although to be entirely accurate you might prefer to watch Angel's fourth episode before Buffy's fourth, just this once. The dialogue of the scenes at the end of the two episodes flows a little bit better. You'll see what I mean.

Season 7 of Buffy and season 4 of Angel however are totally out of synch. Mainly due to the fact this season of Angel happens over the space of a few weeks, rather than the normal six month timespan. Because of this there is one major crossover event that happens waaaay out of order if you watch alternate episode of both seasons.

Dietcokeaddict, when you finally reach those seasons let me know and I'll tell you the best order to watch the episodes in, okay? 😉
