When did Spike first love Buffy?

In my humble opinion in Something Blue Spike and Buffy, despite being under a spell, were forced to confess attraction and love for one another. I think the weird sexual tension with the flirtation (the whole hilarious bathtub scene) was maybe the first true hint that the writers were thinking of cooking up something between them. Yea sorry for my long sentences. I honestly felt like what they revealed to one another under the spell was the actual truth. Of course things didn't get heated until much later, season 5 was the first big reveal of Spike's crush, but season 4 seemed to plan the seeds. Maybe I'm seriously overreaching, but I always felt like James Marsters was so convincing in that scene I felt like what Spike said wasn't just a spell.

Spike falling for Buffy was a slow burn that took years. Their relationship, and the ongoing “fire” theme that is the metaphor that characterizes their journey together, develops over time.

As for when, well, I’d argue Spike became infatuated with Buffy from the moment he first saw her there, dancing in the Bronze. There was immediate attraction, and he was drawn to her.

But what made Spike fall in love with Buffy? I’d argue that happened after, and as a result, of getting to know her, and when he developed an admiration, appreciation and respect for her.

Remember what he says in “Touched?”

I love what you *are*. What you do. How you try... I've seen your kindness, and your strength. I've seen the best and the worst of you.

Fans of course will disagree on when, or ever, Spike actually “fell in love with Buffy” but I think it’s safe to say he has at least in love by the finale in S5, as evidenced by him literally collapsing from grief when he sees her lifeless body.

Also, there is one theory that there was some residual affects from the spell done in “Something Blue”, and that contributed to Spike falling in love with Buffy, which of course is arguably out of character and unnatural. Personally, for obvious reasons I don’t believe this theory, but it’s an interesting one.

In season five, after Spike was repeatedly thwarted in his attempts to get sexual gratification from killing Buffy, his Slayer obsession warped even more, into becoming a stalker and then an abuser.

Sorry Spuffy fans, but I find the "relationship" between them utterly awful and one I never, ever want to experience myself.

My vote is on a long fall that consisted of her getting in his head as soon as they started interacting more closely, IE sending Angelus to hell and Lover's Walk. I do think the spell in Something Blue might have been helpful in speeding things up, but really I think as soon as they started working together he was falling whether he knew it or not. Imo a lot of his half-assed "get the chip out" attempts were more the Spike doth protesting too much and refusing to come to terms with his growing feelings of not-hate.

that's a good point. the chip thing got a little cringey . it bc soo obvious in season five that buffy couldn't ever stake him

To be fair - we learn that Spike judges all Slayers he encounters not only on fighting technique, but looks too. Doesn't mean he 'fell in love' with her.

Spike never loved Buffy in any meanimgful sense. In School Hard's Bronze scene Spike gave off the most rapey vibes I've seen in the Buffyverse and in the high school, Spike invited Buffy to let him rape her before he killed her. And, Spike goes downhill from there.

All of Spikes "relationships" were abuse fests. With Dru he was alternatley caring and demeaning. He was always demanding that Dru do what she was told and he often seemed seconds away from beating her because of his anger issues.

Spike's abuse of Harmony was horrific. A being that can abuse a woman like Spike abused Harmony will abuse every woman he is with.

With Buffy, Spike thought he was in love. To me he was always obsessed. Even if he "loved" Buffy in the vampiric way, vampire "love" is meaningless to a human. Why? Because vampire "love" is obsession to a human.

Spike's "love" for Buffy is perfectly summed up in Wrecked: "It's better to f..... a slayer than (kill one)".

I could go on and on and on, but, I have.to get to work. So..... Spike convinced himself that he was in love with Buffy, but, it was really just "Selfish. Banal. Obsession." And never much more.

Damn… I left the boards years ago because of people’s inability to be cool about their hate boners for Spike; thought maybe it had gotten better, but it seems it’s actually gotten worse. You guys can’t even restrain yourselves in the explicitly “good vibes only” section. It’s just pathetic.

I appreciate all the comments but yes Spike sure does bring out the heated emotions. To me it's why the show was so powerful, b.c. it has the ability to do that. The characters were mostly just so well drawn.

i don't remember what episode that was? in 2 i reckon
