When do you think Spike was at his best?

Hey guys,

So I’ve finished my re-watch of Season 4 recently, and I have to say I’ve always loved Spike as a character but I never realised how much until these re-watches. He is just so hilarious! I’ve read a lot of posts on Buffy Boards about him and his development over the series, so my question is this - In which season (BtVS or AtS) do you think Spike was at his best and why? What stage of his arc was your favourite? When was he, for you, at the top of his game? It could be at his funniest, most exciting, most sympathetic, most menacing, most dark - however you measure "best."

I'd really like to know your thoughts. I haven’t seen any of his stuff on AtS yet (I know - ill correct this soon!!!). Having thought about Season 4 of BtVS as a whole, Spike was my favourite character in that season - EVERY SCENE WAS A CLASSIC. I’m now at the moment re-watching his Buffy infatuation stage in Season 5!! I've literally just finished re-watching Fool For Love, about Spike's history - his siring, his killing of two slayers and his growing attachment to Buffy. It is an incredible episode, very well crafted. It could well be one of my favourite ever episodes!! Spike is just an amazing character!!!

I'll now leave it to you........

🙂

I like Spike in Buffy Season 2, because I think that he's funny when he's evil!
I also enjoy him in Angel Season 5, because the mini-rivalry he has with Angel is funny.

You know, it kinda depends on my mood. If I'll all depressed and dark feeling then I love season 2 Spike.

If I'm looking for a laugh season 4 Spike.

If I'm looking to have my heart crushed then season 5-6 Spike.

And when I'm all nostalgic, for some reason, Season 7 Spike. He's just so tortured and AWESOME then. Which sad to say, is how I like my men. 😀

Plus his love for Buffy there is a lot more pure and less obsessive which makes it feel a lot more honest to me.

Sometimes when I'm feeling all alone and sad I sort of have imaginary conversations about my life with season 7 Spike.

Weird? Yes.

Helpful? Also yes.

I don't know if that even answers the question but there it is. 😀

Buffy season 2. He was badass and his chemistry with Drusilla was legendary, plus once Angelus arrived the two of them were just awesome

An honorable mention to Angel season 5, Angel and Spike banter...what more do you need?

I love him best in those two seasons as well.
I don't know if anyone will agree, but Season 7 Spike is my favorite.

I also love Season 5 AtS Spike. In fact, I absolutely LOVE Season 5 Angel. You've got to watch it!! And stay away from spoilers.

I agree! The more I've been thinking about it, the more I love season 7 Spike. And Angel Season 5 wins at life!

I will do soon - v excited haaa
I really like Spike in Seasons three and four. I like what I think of as the original spike in season 3 and drom then on he makes his transition into someone slightly more human obviously because of chips and souls.

I would say right in the beginning in season 2, before the wheelchair even. When it was he and Drusilla that ruled. 🙂

Liked him all the way through though.
Perhaps he lost a bit of the funny when he got that soul but that's about it.

I'd probably say season 2. He was brilliant when he was bad. I always liked his witty comments through out BtVS, but i much preffered him to when he was bad than when he was good.

You know, I'm trying to think about that, and everytime I set on a season, I say... "wait, no... I like him better in THAT season! No... wait...".

I agree though that season 7 Spike is not the horrible Spike most people think, he's great. He's full of love and care, he's someone I can really really love as a person (well, vampire). On the other hand, season 2 Spike is fun, plus Angel season 5. So it really depends. Do I want fun Spike or the Spike I love at heart as a "person"?

Season 2 before the wheelchair, although I do like his rivalry with Angelus in that season as well. Another than that Season 1 of Angel, basically I prefer him when he's bad

AtS Season 5, because he's got this great dynamic with Angel, and he's snarky, and he's still in love with Buffy.

I'm listening..... with beer! :)
I would say season 6 or season 7, but for different reasons.

I loved his complexity in season 6, it was a really interesting part of his journey, and I have a lot of affection for that period of his story. He wasn't human, but he wasn't a real vampire neither. Feeling himself "out of this world" was something he had in common with Buffy in season 6.

In season 7, he was the same Spike in his attitudes, but at the same time, he was different. He needed to find his path with his new soul, and he needed more time than just one season I think (he keeps finding his way and himself in ATS Season 5). I loved his ways of being in this season, and the climax in Chosen, when he chose to die for the World and Buffy.
