Oh there are so many things I wanted to be! My first dream job idea was when I was about 3, I wanted to work in an Ice cream shop so I could eat all the ice cream 😛 and believe it or not, I still wouldn't mind having that job. I had a mate that worked at wendys and I was so jealous but I got over it quick cos I was getting paid better then her waitressing hehe.
I've always loved animals and wanted to work with them but I always knew I wouldn't have the brains to be a vet so I was going to settle for vet nurse for a while. When I was about 14 I discovered my love for horses and always dreamed to have a career with them. I also discovered how much horses cost at that age so that dream was quickly squished to forever being a hobby. In my last years of high school I loved media and biology. I had a year off in between school and uni where I worked as a waitress. Was a great year with my healthy routine of work, horse riding, beach, drink, pass out, work, sometimes skipping the beach and riding bit. When I moved back to Perth I did Environmental Science at uni but I got sick in first year and had to defer. Im still 'technically' deferring 4 years later but I don't know if I will go back. My priorities have changed.
I've realised that I don't have to have a well paying 9-5 job to be happy. I have never wanted a family so I don't have to mould my life around others, Its only me that I have to look after and I might as well enjoy myself. So Im working with horses. Its hard work and shit pay but I love it. I have had a few different horse related jobs over the years and I never imagined I would be working with racehorses and actually like it! My views of the racing industry have changed for the better, the horses love their work and are extremely well looked after. The trainer I work for is great and does ok at the track (we had a horse run 2nd yesterday so he was worse for wear today LOL). Its a small stable with only 3 other staff which makes it nice and easy too - no bitchiness! I dont know how long I will do it for, if I start to hate it I will move on and do something else, but it suits me at the moment. Even though I complain about the early mornings (4am start) and how tired it makes me I do enjoy myself and think every morning when I get out on the track "what could be better than this?" There are risks though, I had a fall last week where a horse slipped over and landed on me so I have lost my nerve a little but Im not dead so its all good.
Im also heavily involved with Riding for the Disabled. I am a coach (in final stages of training) and I look after the ponies. I work 4 days there, 2 days teaching and 2 days general stable duties/horse care ect. I live pretty much on property so Im always here if there is any other work to be done or any ponies that need care. I NEVER would have seen myself doing this if you had asked me 10 years ago. I dont like kids and have little patience for people (but endless patience for animals - strange aye) but it is also something I really enjoy and I can now NEVER see my life without it. It is so rewarding to see how much horses help theses kids and I have learnt so much about different disabilities and seen how gentle the ponies can be. It is really heartwarming. It takes up most of my spare time and is all voluntary work but I see how much horses improve the lives of these kids and that is payment enough (God that sounds lame)
I work for my mum occasionally - she has a Kite shop at the Freo Markets and I like doing that sometimes too (much easier work!) but customers annoy the hell out of me sometimes and I can get pretty rude. I think I would be a good Postie as I wouldnt have to deal with stupid people. I could just sit on my lil motor bike in my own world delivering mail. Maybe that will be my next job...
