Do we have any definite reference as to in what year Season 9 is taking place? I know that they haven't caught up with "now" time, but Season 8 was supposed to be, I think, 6 month to a year after "Not Fade Away," which would make it 2005 or 2006, so is Season 9 supposed to be around 2007 or early 2008?

Freefall appears to pick up right after the last issue of Last Gleaming.

Last Gleaming took place around May 2005.

That would make the beginning of S9 around September or October 2005.

Chosen was in May 2003 and Not Fade Away was May 2004. The Long Way Home was said to be 1 1/2 years after Chosen and 6 months after NFA. So The Long Way Home was in November 2004.

We should be coming up to Buffy's 10 year Slayer anniversary and 25th birthday in January 2006. Which would also be the anniversary of Angel being recruited by the Powers that Be (give or take a few weeks since a lot think Buffy found out she was a Slayer 2 weeks after becoming one, making the first time Angel saw her in February instead of January, the date coming from the one on the videocasette in Restless), the 8th anniversary of Buffy's loss of virginity and of Angel finding out about the loophole, and the 5th anniversary of Dawn finding out she was The Key.

The comics are always supposed to be set "right now" so that the writers can use contemporary pop culture references and so on. But trying to count the years back and figuring out that Buffy is supposed to be 32 years old, etc., doesn't work. It's "comic book compressed" time... the same thing that prevents Batman from being 100 years old.

I meant to say that Last Gleaming jumped forward 4 months in the last issue of that arc, making it in September or October of 2005. And that is why Freefall would be around that time too.

I am going to be really upset if Joss and the writers forget about the anniversaries coming up. They are such crucial ones!

Yeah, a lot of fans have gotten confused about the timelines since there are out of place media references. James Bond's Casino Royale. Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga books. Lady Gaga's Born This Way song.
