I love The Road! Well, if love is the right word for such a depressing, hopeless movie.
I've always kept an eye out for David Lynch films - he mixes surrealism, horror, mystery, violence, all so well that it's like watching a dream (or nightmare) unfold. It's fascinating that someone can make so many films that are completely open to interpretation by the viewer, whilst keeping it interesting and leaving you wanting more. Then he makes movies like The Elephant Man and The Straight Story which leave you blubbering like a child.
I've always liked Scorsese, but his recent run of films starring Leonardo DiCaprio have been really interesting. Shutter Island felt like a new direction for Scorsese, then The Wolf of Wall Street was a psychotic three hour long, in your face classic-Scorsese-fest. Soooo, here's hoping The Devil in the White City is a good watch.
David Cronenberg has made some classic sci-fi stuff that I've loved. Then in the 00s when he released A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, which didn't comply with his usual recognisable special effects and gore, I was surprised but delighted. Long may it continue.
One of my favourite films is Buffalo '66, written, directed and starring Vincent Gallo. Gallo seems like a total ego maniac who likes having his stroked - but on first viewing Buffalo '66 I was amazed at how much I enjoyed it, how different it was and I loved, LOVED the cinematography. It changed how I viewed film, the characters were so believable and achingly realistic, to the point it made you uncomfortable. I'd definitely watch anything else he comes up with. Plus he's hawt as hell.
